  • Abrasive flow machining (AFM) finishing of conformal cooling channels created by selective laser melting (SLM)

摘要: Conformal cooling channels are widely adopted in the mold industry because of rapid and uniform cooling during injection molding. These complicated cooling channel geometries become feasible via selective laser melting (SLM) technology. However, the SLM fabricated internal channel surface shows high surface roughness of about 10 μm Ra. This rough surface can cause stress concentration, reducing the fatigue life of the mold. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the surface finish of the SLM fabricated conformal channels by abrasive flow machining (AFM), which is widely used in the surface finishing of internal channels. To fulfill this objective, a combination of single/multiple and straight/helical channels for conformal cooling channel geometries are employed. Seven different types of conformal cooling channels (?3mm) inside the bar are fabricated using SLM. The bar is put in the AFM fixture, and the internal channels are polished by flowing AFM media (ULV50%-54) through the channel at the same extrusion pressure of 80 bars for ten cycles. Fourteen bars (seven before AFM and seven after AFM) are machined to have the internal channel surfaces exposed for surface roughness measurement. Surface topographies of the exposed surfaces of seven types of internal channels are obtained using focus variation microscopy. The areal roughness parameters, such as arithmetical mean height (Sa) on the internal channel surfaces before and after AFM. By comparing SLM as-built conformal channel surfaces with AFM finished ones, AFM is shown to be effective in improving all SLM conformal cooling channels’ arithmetical mean height, Sa. Areal roughness parameters, such as developed interfacial area ratio (Sdr), root mean square gradient (Sdq), reduced peak height (Spk), reduced valley height (Svk), and skewness (Ssk), on those internal surfaces, were found to be sensitive to surface finishing by AFM.

  • Evaluation of Terrestrial Laser Scanner and Structure from Motion photogrammetry techniques for quantifying soil surface roughness parameters over agricultural soils

摘要: The surface roughness of agricultural soils is mainly related to the type of tillage performed, typically consisting of oriented and random components. Traditionally, soil surface roughness (SSR) characterization has been difficult due to its high spatial variability and the sensitivity of roughness parameters to the characteristics of the instruments, including its measurement scale. Recent advances in surveying have greatly improved the spatial resolution, extent, and availability of surface elevation datasets. However, it is still unknown how new roughness measurements relates with the conventional roughness measurements such as 2D profiles acquired by laser profilometers. The objective of this study was to evaluate the suitability of Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) and Structure from Motion (SfM) photogrammetry techniques for quantifying SSR over different agricultural soils. With this aim, an experiment was carried out in three plots (5 × 5 m) representing different roughness conditions, where TLS and SfM photogrammetry measurements were co-registered with 2D profiles obtained using a laser profilometer. Differences between new and conventional roughness measurement techniques were evaluated visually and quantitatively using regression analysis and comparing the values of six different roughness parameters. TLS and SfM photogrammetry measurements were further compared by evaluating multi-directional roughness parameters and analyzing corresponding Digital Elevation Models. The results obtained demonstrate the ability of both TLS and SfM photogrammetry techniques to measure 3D SSR over agricultural soils. However, profiles obtained with both techniques (especially SfM photogrammetry) showed a loss of high-frequency elevation information that affected the values of some parameters (e.g. initial slope of the autocorrelation function, peak frequency and tortuosity). Nevertheless, both TLS and SfM photogrammetry provide a massive amount of 3D information that enables a detailed analysis of surface roughness, which is relevant for multiple applications, such as those focused in hydrological and soil erosion processes and microwave scattering.

  • New Method for Evaluating Surface Roughness Parameters Acquired by Laser Scanning

摘要: Quality evaluation of a material’s surface is performed through roughness analysis of surface samples. Several techniques have been presented to achieve this goal, including geometrical analysis and surface roughness analysis. Geometric analysis allows a visual and subjective evaluation of roughness (a qualitative assessment), whereas computation of the roughness parameters is a quantitative assessment and allows a standardized analysis of the surfaces. In civil engineering, the process is performed with mechanical profilometer equipment (2D) without adequate accuracy and laser profilometer (3D) with no consensus on how to interpret the result quantitatively. This work proposes a new method to evaluate surface roughness, starting from the generation of a visual surface roughness signature, which is calculated through the roughness parameters computed in hierarchically organized regions. The evaluation tools presented in this new method provide a local and more accurate evaluation of the computed coefficients. In the tests performed it was possible to quantitatively analyze roughness differences between ceramic blocks and to find that a quantitative microscale analysis allows to identify the largest variation of roughness parameters Raavg, Rasdv, Ramin and Ramax between samples, which benefit the evaluation and comparison of the sampled surfaces.
