    摘要: In this paper, we report on the characterization of detectors constructed at RMD using 1-inch, 1.5-inch, and 2-inch diameter right cylinders of CLYC and CLLBC crystals coupled to arrays of silicon photomultipliers (SiPM). Detectors constructed with small volume CLLBC crystals coupled to a 12 mm × 12mm total area SiPM array show an excellent energy resolution of ~3% at 662 keV and a large volume CLYC crystal when coupled to a 24 mm × 24 mm area array shows an energy resolution of ~6.6% at 662 keV. Both detectors show pulse shape discrimination capabilities.

  • Directional fast neutron detection using a time projection chamber and plastic scintillation detectors

    摘要: A new method for directional fast neutron detection is proposed based on a neutron time projection chamber (TPC) and position-sensitive plastic scintillation detectors. The detection system can efficiently locate the approximate location of a hot spot with 4π field-of-view using only the neutron TPC. Then, the system generates a high-resolution image of the hot spot using selected coincidence events in the TPC and the scintillation detectors. A prototype was built and tested using a 252Cf source. An efficiency of 7.1×10-3 was achieved for fast searching. The angular resolution was 7.8° (full width at half maximum, FWHM) for high-resolution imaging using the simple back projection method.

  • CMOS-coupled NaI scintillation detector for gamma decay measurements

    摘要: We report an all-solid-state gamma-ray scintillation detector comprised of a NaI(Tl) crystal and a scientific-grade CMOS camera. After calibration, this detector exhibits excellent linearity over more than three decades of activity levels ranging from 10 mCi to 400 nCi. Because the detector is not counting pulses, dead-time correction is not required. Compared to systems that use a photomultiplier tube, this detector has similar sensitivity and noise characteristics on short time scales. On longer time scales, we measure drifts of a few percent over several days, which can be accommodated through regular calibration. Using this detector, we observe that when high activity sources are brought into close proximity to the NaI crystal, several minutes are required for the measured signal to achieve a steady state.

    摘要: Most spectroscopic applications, especially homeland security relevant equipment relies on well-calibrated spectral data. A Kalman filter is applied to the known problem of stabilization, which means online calibration of a scintillation detector to a predefined reference peak. The method uses stochastic assumptions on the measurement uncertainties and an iterative update with new measurements. Introducing prior knowledge about the stochastic and continuously resupplying new spectral data to the filter enhances the predicted gain correction value and allows a rapid determination of this value. In multi-detector setups, the spectral alignment of data from all detectors is mandatory for performing data fusion or any further evaluations. The described Kalman technique also allows to perform this rapid cross-detector synchronization online, leading to matched up spectra at acquisition time.

  • A First Response Microcontroller Based Digital Radiation Survey Meter Using Scintillation Detector

    摘要: This paper presents the microcontroller based advanced technique to design and development of a portable radiation survey meter to measure low level gamma radiation using NAI(T1) scintillation detector. A scintillation detector was used as radiation detector and a microcontroller PIC16F876 was used to control the function of the developed system. The microcontroller generated square wave frequency at specified pulse width to produce high voltage (+1200V) and regulates it. The high voltage was required to activate the scintillation detector. Preamplifier and amplifier were designed to make the detector signal for the further amplification. Microcontroller senses the pulses from the amplifier output and processes data by software and displays the results. The microcontroller was programmed using a high level programming language ‘C’ with PCWH compiler.
