  • Laser-shock compression experiment on magnesium hydride

    摘要: A dynamic high-pressure experiment was performed on magnesium hydride to measure the Hugoniot equation-of-state point using laser-driven shock waves. By measuring the mean shock velocity of MgH2 and the time-resolved shock velocity of the quartz reference, the Hugoniot state of MgH2 at 150 GPa was determined. The reliability of the data is ensured by using another reference material, polystyrene, which is next to the sample and is compressed by the same. This work validates the experimental methodology to obtain further high-pressure data of MgH2 with high accuracy.

  • Femtosecond diffraction studies of solid and liquid phase changes in shock-compressed bismuth

    摘要: Bismuth has long been a prototypical system for investigating phase transformations and melting at high pressure. Despite decades of experimental study, however, the lattice-level response of Bi to rapid (shock) compression and the relationship between structures occurring dynamically and those observed during slow (static) compression, are still not clearly understood. We have determined the structural response of shock-compressed Bi to 68 GPa using femtosecond X-ray diffraction, thereby revealing the phase transition sequence and equation-of-state in unprecedented detail for the first time. We show that shocked-Bi exhibits a marked departure from equilibrium behavior - the incommensurate Bi-III phase is not observed, but rather a new metastable phase, and the Bi-V phase is formed at significantly lower pressures compared to static compression studies. We also directly measure structural changes in a shocked liquid for the first time. These observations reveal new behaviour in the solid and liquid phases of a shocked material and give important insights into the validity of comparing static and dynamic datasets.

  • The influence of external stress/strain on the phase transitions and dielectric properties of potassium niobate crystal

    摘要: We investigated the effects of one-dimensional shock wave compression on the structural, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties of a potassium niobate ferroelectric crystal using Landau–Ginsburg–Devonshire phenomenological theory. Our results show that the cubic to tetragonal and tetragonal to orthorhombic phase transition temperatures increase with increasing shock compression and the derivative of the phase transition temperatures with respect to stain induced by shock compression was estimated to be 21.9 °C/10?3. Additionally, the orthorhombic to rhombohedral phase transition temperature decreased with increasing shock compression and the derivative of the phase transition temperatures with respect to stain induced by shock compression was estimated to be ?144.3 °C/10?3. This result represents a 15.3% increase in the remnant polarization of the tetragonal KNbO3 crystal when the stain induced by shock compression increased from 0 to 4×10?3 at 400 °C. The dielectric susceptibilities ε33 and ε22 were calculated to decrease by approximately 20% and 40%, respectively, when the stain induced by shock compression increased from 0 to 1.6×10?3 at 350 °C. The increase in the remnant polarization and the decrease in the dielectric properties induced by shock compression provide an effective way to improve the power output capacity of a ferroelectric-pulsed power supply.
