  • Attosecond Pulse Shaping by Multilayer Mirrors

    摘要: The emerging research field of attosecond science allows for the temporal investigation of one of the fastest dynamics in nature: electron dynamics in matter. These dynamics are responsible for chemical and biological processes, and the ability to understand and control them opens a new door of fundamental science, with the possibility to influence all lives if medical issues can thereby be addressed. Multilayer optics are key elements in attosecond experiments; they are used to tailor attosecond pulses with well-defined characteristics to facilitate detailed and accurate insight into processes, e.g., photoemission, Auger decay, or (core-) excitons. Based on the investigations and research efforts from the past several years, multilayer mirrors today are routinely used optical elements in attosecond beamlines. As a consequence, the generation of ultrashort pulses, combined with their dispersion control, has proceeded from the femtosecond range in the visible/infrared spectra to the attosecond range, covering the extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray photon range up to the water window. This article reviews our work on multilayer optics over the past several years, as well as the impact from other research groups, to reflect on the scientific background of their nowadays routine use in attosecond physics.

  • A flat-field soft X-ray spectrometer for X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurement of warm dense matter

    摘要: A flat-field soft X-ray spectrograph operating in the spectral range of 250–1240 eV was designed and built for warm dense matter and high-energy density plasma physics. It employs a grazing incidence toroidal mirror as a focusing optic, an aberration-corrected variable line spacing concave grating with 2400 lines/mm as a dispersive element, and a charge coupled device as an X-ray detector. The dispersion and energy resolution are calibrated with a high-power laser-produced plasma and X-ray free electron laser sources. A resolving power over 370 was achieved over the entire spectral range. A super broadband spectrum in the range of 250–1000 eV was measured from the laser-produced bismuth plasma. The signal-to-noise of 130 was obtained with an average of 10 pulses. These results demonstrate the capability of the spectrograph for single laser shot based experiments for warm dense matter and high energy density plasma research.

  • Laguerre–Gauss and Hermite–Gauss soft X-ray states generated using diffractive optics

    摘要: Light’s capacity to carry angular momentum is integral to our knowledge of physics and ability to probe matter. In addition to spin, photons can occupy free-space orbital angular momentum eigenstates. Visible light orbital angular momentum is used in quantum information experiments, super-resolution microscopy, optical tweezers and angular momentum transfer to atoms in optical lattices. Soft X-ray orbital angular momentum applications, slowed by the lack of suitable optics and the rarity of coherent X-ray sources, could enable the direct alteration of atomic states through orbital angular momentum exchange, and methods to study the electronic properties of quantum materials. We have made soft X-ray diffractive optics that generate single Laguerre–Gauss modes, observed carrying up to 30? angular momentum per photon, or their superpositions. We also present Hermite–Gauss diffractive optics and a soft X-ray orbital angular momentum analyser. These tools could enable both the manipulation and finer characterization of topologically complex electronic matter, such as magnetic skyrmions.

  • Pixel-to-pixel variation on a calibrated PILATUS3-based multi-energy soft x-ray detector

    摘要: A multi-energy soft x-ray pin-hole camera based on the PILATUS3 100 K x-ray detector has recently been installed on the Madison Symmetric Torus. This photon-counting detector consists of a two-dimensional array of ~100 000 pixels for which the photon lower-threshold cutoff energy Ec can be independently set for each pixel. This capability allows the measurement of plasma x-ray emissivity in multiple energy ranges with a unique combination of spatial and spectral resolution and the inference of a variety of important plasma properties (e.g., T e, nZ, Z eff). The energy dependence of each pixel is calibrated for the 1.6–6 keV range by scanning individual trimbit settings, while the detector is exposed to ?uorescence emission from Ag, In, Mo, Ti, V, and Zr targets. The resulting data for each line are then ?t to a characteristic "S-curve" which determines the mapping between the 64 possible trimbit settings for each pixel. The statistical variation of this calibration from pixel-to-pixel was explored, and it was found that the discreteness of trimbit settings results in an effective threshold resolution of ?E < 100 eV. A separate calibration was performed for the 4–14 keV range, with a resolution of ?E < 200 eV.

  • Soft X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy Study of Spin Crossover Fe-Compounds: Persistent High Spin Configurations under Soft X-ray Irradiation

    摘要: Metal-organic complex exhibiting spin crossover (SCO) behavior has drawn attention for its functionality as a nanoscale spin switch. The spin states in the metal ions can be tuned by external stimuli such as temperature or light. This article demonstrates a soft X-ray–induced excited spin state trapping (SOXEISST) effect in Hofmann-like SCO coordination polymers of FeII(4-methylpyrimidine)2[Au(CN)2]2 and FeII(pyridine)2[Ni(CN)4]. A soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) study on these polymers showed that the high spin configuration (HS; S = 2) was prevalent in Fe2+ ions during the measurement even at temperatures much lower than the critical temperatures (>170 K), manifesting HS trapping due to the X-ray irradiation. This is in strong contrast to the normal SCO behavior observed in FeII(1,10-phenanthroline)2(NCS)2, implying that the structure of the ligand chains in the polymers with relatively loose Fe-N coordination might allow a structural adaptation to stabilize the metastable HS state under the soft X-ray irradiation.

  • A Novel Recovery Method of Soft X-ray Spectrum Unfolding Based on Compressive Sensing

    摘要: In the experiment of inertial con?nement fusion, soft X-ray spectrum unfolding can provide important information to optimize the design of the laser and target. As the laser beams increase, there are limited locations for installing detection channels to obtain measurements, and the soft X-ray spectrum can be dif?cult to recover. In this paper, a novel recovery method of soft X-ray spectrum unfolding based on compressive sensing is proposed, in which (1) the spectrum recovery is formulated as a problem of accurate signal recovery from very few measurements (i.e., compressive sensing), and (2) the proper basis atoms are selected adaptively over a Legendre orthogonal basis dictionary with a large size and Lasso regression in the sense of (cid:96)1 norm, which enables the spectrum to be accurately recovered with little measured data from the limited detection channels. Finally, the presented approach is validated with experimental data. The results show that it can still achieve comparable accuracy from only 8 spectrometer detection channels as it has previously done from 14 detection channels. This means that the presented approach is capable of recovering spectrum from the data of limited detection channels, and it can be used to save more space for other detectors.

  • Laguerre-Gaussian Mode Laser Heater for Microbunching Instability Suppression in Free-Electron Lasers

    摘要: Microbunching instability (MBI) driven by beam collective effects is known to be detrimental to high-brightness storage rings, linacs, and free-electron lasers (FELs). One known way to suppress this instability is to induce a small amount of energy spread to an electron beam by a laser heater. The distribution of the induced energy spread greatly affects MBI suppression and can be controlled by shaping the transverse profile of the heater laser. Here, we present the first experimental demonstration of effective MBI suppression using a LG01 transverse laser mode and compare the improved results with respect to traditional Gaussian transverse laser mode at the Linac Coherent Light Source. The effects on MBI suppression are characterized by multiple downstream measurements, including longitudinal phase space analysis and coherent radiation spectroscopy. We also discuss the role of LG01 shaping in soft x-ray self-seeded FEL emission, one of the most advanced operation modes of a FEL for which controlled suppression of MBI is critical.

  • Three Dimensional Imaging of Biological Samples and Nano-materials Using Soft X-ray Microscopy

    摘要: The soft X-ray Microscopy beamline BL07W at National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory is devoted to cryo nano-tomography for biological applications in the water window (284 - 530 eV) and for imaging of nanomaterials from 200 to 2500 eV. An ellipsoidal capillary used as condense to focus monochromatic light onto the sample. Two Ni zone plate (ZP) lenses made by Zeiss with 40 nm and 25 nm outer most zone widths, respectively, are available, giving spatial resolution in 2D of down to 40 nm and 30 nm, respectively. Hydrated biological specimens had been imaged in the water window photon energy range without chemical fixation, dehydration, chemical staining and physical sectioning. In addition, other applications such as nanomaterials imaging had been demonstrated.

  • Growth of Atomic Layer Deposited Ruthenium and Its Optical Properties at Short Wavelengths Using Ru(EtCp)2 and Oxygen

    摘要: High-density ruthenium (Ru) thin films were deposited using Ru(EtCp)2 (bis(ethylcyclopentadienyl)ruthenium) and oxygen by thermal atomic layer deposition (ALD) and compared to magnetron sputtered (MS) Ru coatings. The ALD Ru film growth and surface roughness show a significant temperature dependence. At temperatures below 200 °C, no deposition was observed on silicon and fused silica substrates. With increasing deposition temperature, the nucleation of Ru starts and leads eventually to fully closed, polycrystalline coatings. The formation of blisters starts at temperatures above 275 °C because of poor adhesion properties, which results in a high surface roughness. The optimum deposition temperature is 250 °C in our tool and leads to rather smooth film surfaces, with roughness values of approximately 3 nm. The ALD Ru thin films have similar morphology compared with MS coatings, e.g., hexagonal polycrystalline structure and high density. Discrepancies of the optical properties can be explained by the higher roughness of ALD films compared to MS coatings. To use ALD Ru for optical applications at short wavelengths (λ = 2–50 nm), further improvement of their film quality is required.

  • Time resolved and time integrated analysis of the AXUV photodiode diagnostics for EUV and soft X-ray emission of nanosecond-laser-produced plasma

    摘要: This paper addresses the experimental results and analysis of the time-resolved and time-integrated of AXUV (absolute extreme ultraviolet) photodiode diagnostics. These results are obtained by the measurement of EUV and soft X-ray (SX) power radiation of plasma-produced under the interaction of laser pulse (intensity ~5 × 1011 W/cm2, pulse durations in the range of 10?30 ns and wavelength 1064 nm) with one steel-316 target. The EUV and SX signals with the three speci?c peaks are detected by AXUV photodiode. From the analysis of time resolved of the AXUV signal, it is inferred that the ?rst signal peak can dominantly be related to the free-free transition mechanism of radiation and also the latter related to the free-band and bond-bond transitions respectively. The energy of EUV and SX pulse emission is observed to be approximately linear, proportional to the laser pulse energy. The time integrated results show that, the average energy conversion e?ciency is determined to be about 3.7 %.
