  • Harmonic Mode-Locking in Bidirectional Domain-Wall Soliton Fiber Lasers

    摘要: We report on the first experimental observation of passively harmonic mode-locking (HML) in a bidirectional domain-wall dark-soliton fiber laser. The domain-wall solitons (DWSs) are characterized, in which, the strong coupling between the two directions takes great responsibility for the generation. By appropriately altering the polarization state in the cavity, the stable fundamental domain-wall solitons and HML states could be obtained and switched with increasing the pump power. In our experiment, the repetition rate can be tunable from the fundamental mode locking of 2.96 MHz up to eighth-order HML of 23.68 MHz when the pump power is increased from 120 to 542.5 mW. Importantly, this HML operation of dark-pulse DWSs confirms that the DWSs are the intrinsic feature of the mode-locked lasers, as well as the conventional bright solitons. This work could provide a new perspective to the understanding of the formation and transformation of dark solitons, which may also find great potential applications in fiber sensing and future optical communication systems.

  • Dual-wavelength dissipative solitons in an anomalous-dispersion-cavity fiber laser

    摘要: We report on the experimental observation of dual-wavelength dissipative soliton operation of a fiber laser with net anomalous cavity dispersion. Different from the dual- or multi-wavelength soliton operation of fiber lasers where mode locking is used to initiate soliton formation, no mode locking occurs in our fiber laser. Instead, soliton formation is through the dissipative mechanism caused by the effective gain bandwidth limitation. Either dual-wavelength scalar, or vector, or induced dissipative solitons are experimentally obtained. Their robustness is experimentally confirmed.

  • Bilinear Forms and Dark-Dark Solitons for the Coupled Cubic-Quintic Nonlinear Schr?dinger Equations with Variable Coefficients in a Twin-Core Optical Fiber or Non-Kerr Medium

    摘要: Twin-core optical ?bers are applied in such ?elds as the optical sensing and optical communication, and propagation of the pulses, Gauss beams and laser beams in the non-Kerr media is reported. Studied in this paper are the coupled cubic-quintic nonlinear Schr¨odinger equations with variable coe?cients, which describe the e?ects of quintic nonlinearity for the ultrashort optical pulse propagation in a twin-core optical ?ber or non-Kerr medium. Based on the integrable conditions, bilinear forms are derived, and dark-dark soliton solutions can be constructed in terms of the Gramian via the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy reduction. Propagation and interaction of the dark-dark solitons are presented and discussed through the graphic analysis. With di?erent values of the delayed nonlinear response e?ect b(z), where z represents direction of the propagation, the linear- and parabolic-shaped one dark-dark soltions can be derived. Interactions between the parabolic- and periodic-shaped two dark-dark solitons are presented with b(z) as the linear and periodic functions, respectively. Directions of velocities of the two dark-dark solitons vary with z and the amplitudes of the solitons remain unchanged can be observed. Interactions between the two dark-dark solitons of di?erent types are displayed, and we observe that the velocity of one soliton is zero and direction of the velocity of the other soliton vary with z. We ?nd that those interactions are elastic.

  • Slow-Light Frequency Combs and Dissipative Kerr Solitons in Coupled-Cavity Waveguides

    摘要: We study Kerr frequency combs and dissipative Kerr solitons in silicon photonic crystal coupled-cavity waveguides (CCWs) with globally optimized dispersion at telecom wavelengths. The corresponding threshold for comb generation is found to explicitly depend on the main CCW figures of merit, namely, the mode volume, the normal-mode quality factor, and the slow-light group index. Our analysis is carried out by solving the nonlinear dynamics of the CCW Bloch modes in the presence of Kerr nonlinearity and two-photon absorption. Our results open the way to CCW comb generation via dispersion engineering and slow-light enhancement.

    摘要: The ability to generate optical frequency combs in nonlinear resonators has attracted significant attention over the last decade. While the majority of studies have considered resonators dominated by the third-order Kerr nonlinearity, more recent investigations have shown that comb generation is also possible through second order nonlinear effects. Experimental works have in particular demonstrated that combs can arise in driven resonators via second-harmonic generation (SHG), both in the presence and absence of a phase-mismatch. Theoretical works have so far focussed almost exclusively on the case of perfect phase-matching. This is somewhat surprising, for it is well-known that phase-mismatched SHG can give rise to a strong effective Kerr nonlinearity coefficient whose sign can be controlled with the phase-mismatch. Here, we theoretically and numerically investigate the generation of Kerr-like frequency combs in resonators under conditions of phase-mismatched SHG. We show that the equations describing intracavity SHG tend towards the Lugiato-Lefever equation of Kerr nonlinear resonators when the phase-mismatch is very large. The resulting effective Kerr nonlinearity coefficient can still exceed that of typical fused silica microcavities. Importantly, the Kerr coefficient is negative if the phase-mismatch is negative, alluding to the possibility of Kerr-like combs in the regime of normal dispersion. In conclusion, we have shown that a cavity subject to phase-mismatched SHG can display pure Kerr cavity dynamics in the regime of very large phase-mismatch. Moreover, we find that localised soliton states can manifest themselves even for intermediate values of phase-mismatch.

  • Mechanism of formation of noiselike pulses in passively mode-locked fiber lasers

    摘要: We present the results of an analysis of noiselike pulses generated in passively mode-locked ?ber lasers with anomalous dispersion. The master equation used for the analysis takes into account the gain saturation, the quadratic frequency dispersion of the gain and the refractive index, and the cubic-quintic nonlinearity of the losses and refractive index. Reasons for the stabilization of noiselike pulses are investigated. It is found that the space-time localization of a noiselike pulse is associated with the suppression of single solitons located outside this pulse. The mechanism of such competition between single solitons and a noiselike pulse is determined.

  • On the role of four-wave mixing effect in the interactions between nonlinear modes of coupled generalized nonlinear Schr?dinger equation

    摘要: In this paper, we investigate the effect of four-wave mixing in the interactions among nonlinear waves such as solitons, breathers, and rogue waves of a coupled generalized nonlinear Schr?dinger equation. We explore several interesting results including superposition of breather pulses, increment in the number of breather pulses and in amplitudes of breathers, and rogue waves. By strengthening the four-wave mixing parameter, we observe different transformations that occur between different localized structures. For instance, we visualize a transformation from bright soliton to breather form, bright and dark rogue wave to four-petaled rogue wave structures, four-petaled rogue wave to other rogue wave forms, and so on. Another important observation that we report here is that the interaction of a bright soliton with a rogue wave in the presence of the four-wave mixing effect provides interaction between a dark oscillatory soliton and a rogue wave.

  • Real-time characterization of spectral instabilities in a mode-locked fibre laser exhibiting soliton-similariton dynamics

    摘要: the study of dissipative solitons in mode-locked lasers reveals a rich landscape of interaction dynamics resulting from the interplay of nonlinearity, dispersion and dissipation. Here, we characterize a range of instabilities in a dissipative soliton fibre laser in a regime where both conventional soliton and similariton propagation play significant roles in the intracavity pulse shaping. Specifically, we use the Dispersive fourier transform technique to perform real-time spectral measurements of buildup dynamics from noise to the generation of stable single pulses, phase evolution dynamics of bound state “similariton molecules”, and several examples of intermittent instability and explosion dynamics. These results show that the instabilities previously seen in other classes of passively mode-locked fibre lasers are also observed in the presence of strong nonlinear attraction of similariton evolution in an optical fibre amplifier.
