摘要: In order to support, in a cost-effective way, the data capacity demand in the context of future 5G networks, a new set of advanced technologies need to be explored, as it is the case of space-division multiplexing (SDM) along with energy efficient coherent detection based modulation formats. This paper presents the recent results on enabled optical networks based on SDM for high capacity optical networks compatible with 5G network infrastructure and data center connectivity. In particular, we demonstrate the viability of using Long-Period Gratings (LPGs) in multi-core fibers (MCFs) to develop different components for multicore-based SDM systems, such as pump couplers and core/wavelength selective multi-core switches and couplers. Moreover, we also present and characterize the performance of different digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms and subsystems supporting optical coherent detection in SDM systems.

Routing, spectrum and core assignment algorithms for protection of space division multiplexing elastic optical networks
摘要: Protection is a key issue in optical networks, mainly in spacial division multiplexing (SDM) elastic optical networks (EONs) as these handle the increasing amount of heterogeneous Internet traffic. In this paper, we address protection in SDM-EONs including inter-core crosstalk. We introduce three algorithms, designed to provide 100% protection from single failures. Extensive simulation is used to show that the proposed algorithms prevents the formation of network bottlenecks, thus maintaining the protection of the connections.

Averaged nonlinear equations for multimode fibers valid in all regimes of random linear coupling
摘要: We develop averaged equations to model nonlinear propagation in multimode fibers that are valid in all regimes of random, linear, intermodal coupling. The propagation equations apply to the three existing regimes of linear coupling – the two previously studied all-mode (strong) and mode-group (weak) couplings and the new intermediate coupling regime. The equations are therefore general and can describe nonlinear propagation for all types of intermodal linear coupling that can exist between modes in a fiber supporting multiple spatial modes. Numerical simulations are performed to validate the new averaged propagation equations in the nonlinear regime.

Three-Dimensional Resource Allocation in Space Division Multiplexing Elastic Optical Networks
摘要: In this paper, we present a comprehensive model to address three-dimensional resource assignment (3D-RA) in space division multiplexing elastic optical networks using few-mode multi-core fibers (FM-MCFs). Accordingly, we present new 3D-RA algorithms in which the consequential resources include the spectrum, modes, and cores. We consider all spectral and spatial diversity types in FM-MCFs and introduce five 3D-RA scenarios including (i) single-mode and single-core (SMSC), (ii) single-mode and multi-core (SMMC), (iii) multi-mode and single-core (MMSC), (iv) multi-mode and multi-core (MMMC), and finally, (v) hybrid 3D-RA. In each scenario, the fractional joint (FrJ-) and independent (Ind-) switching (Sw) schemes are introduced and explored for the proposed scenarios. By using the FrJ- and Ind-Sw schemes, we performed the simulation process for the above-mentioned scenarios. The simulation results confirm the efficiency of the proposed 3D-RA algorithms. Furthermore, various 3D-RA scenarios are comprehensively compared using the obtained results in terms of vital metrics introduced in this work. It is also indicated that the SMSC and MMSC scenarios present superior performance for Ind-Sw and FrJ-Sw 3D-RA scenarios, respectively, in comparison to other proposed non-hybrid scenarios. The obtained results also reveal that the quad-hybrid 3D-RA scenario results in the lowest blocking probability in comparison with all other introduced scenarios in both switching schemes. These results recommend an efficient simulation system for compatible transceivers for Ind- and FrJ-Sw schemes.

摘要: We have developed the Mosquito method for fabricating polymer optical waveguides. By using the Mosquito method, three-dimensional array of circular cores with graded- index profile can be formed. In this paper, to realize an effective coupling element for multicore fibers (MCF) and single- mode fibers, fan-in/out polymer optical waveguides are focused. For low-loss fan-in/out waveguide, the Mosquito method is applied where the fabrication conditions are investigated to improve the optical properties in multiple cores. Furthermore, fan-in/out structure for 7-core MCF is successfully fabricated.

Femtosecond laser additive and subtractive micro-processing: enabling a high-channel-density silica interposer for multicore fibre to silicon-photonic packaging
摘要: Great strides have been made over the past decade to establish femtosecond lasers in advanced manufacturing systems for enabling new forms of non-contact processing of transparent materials. Research advances have shown that a myriad of additive and subtractive techniques is now possible for flexible 2D and 3D structuring of such materials with micro- and nano-scale precision. In this paper, these techniques have been refined and scaled up to demonstrate the potential for 3D writing of high-density optical packaging components, specifically addressing the major bottleneck for efficiently connecting optical fibres to silicon photonic (SiP) processors for use in telecom and data centres. An 84-channel fused silica interposer was introduced for high-density edge coupling of multicore fibres (MCFs) to a SiP chip. Femtosecond laser irradiation followed by chemical etching (FLICE) was further harnessed to open alignment sockets, permitting rapid assembly with precise locking of MCF positions for efficient coupling to laser written optical waveguides in the interposer. A 3D waveguide fanout design provided an attractive balancing of low losses, mode-matching, high channel density, compact footprint, and low crosstalk. The 3D additive and subtractive processes thus demonstrated the potential for higher scale integration and rapid photonic assembly and packaging of micro-optic components for telecom interconnects, with possible broader applications in integrated biophotonic chips or micro-displays.

摘要: In this paper, we review recent progress on space division multiplexed (SDM) transmission and our proposal of dense SDM (DSDM) with more than 30 spatial channels toward capacities beyond petabit/s. Furthermore, we discuss the requirements for realizing long-haul DSDM transport systems using multicore and/or multimode fiber, including power and space efficient amplification schemes, the use of fibers with large effective areas and transmission lines with low intercore crosstalk, low differential mode delay (DMD), and low mode dependent loss (MDL). Graded index heterogeneous 12-core × 3-mode fiber with low crosstalk, low DMD, and low MDL, parallel multiple-input and multiple-output signal processing, low mode dependent gain Erbium-doped fiber amplifiers, and MDL equalization technologies are significant as regards extending the reach of multicore and multimode transmission. We review our long-distance transmission experiment on polarization-division multiplexed 16-quadrature amplitude modulation signaling over 12-core × 3-mode fiber.

Resource Efficient Online Routing Enabled Translucent Space Division Multiplexing Based Elastic Optical Networks
摘要: In the current work, we focus on the optimization of lightpath routing in a Space Division Multiplexing based Elastic Optical Network (SDM-b-EON) for which we propose an online routing algorithm, named as Resource Efficient Online Routing Algorithm with Regeneration (REORAwR) which, in addition to ensuring the routing of translucent lightpaths through spectral super-channels over spatial modes links also accounts for the presence of the transceivers in the network. The proposed REORAwR algorithm is tunable such that it can either aim to reduce the bandwidth blocking probability or can aim to minimize the overall consumed power. In regard to regeneration, we investigate two scenarios which differ in their regeneration variability level in addition to the adjustment of modulation formats as per the transmission route characteristics. We conduct extensive simulations considering two realistic network topologies and realistic transmission reach values. The obtained results demonstrate that significant benefits can be obtained in regard to the utilization of both the major network resources (spectrum and transceivers) when regeneration is conducted with complete flexibility and modulation format conversion is also permitted at every node of the SDM-b-EON. In addition, the obtained results also show that when compared to spectrum usage, in terms of the overall consumed power, the performance profits which can be obtained in a translucent SDM-b-EON are very small.
