  • Experimental Observation of Bound States of 2D Dirac Electrons at Surface Steps of the Topological Insulator Bi <sub/>2</sub> Se <sub/>3</sub>

    摘要: Topologically protected surface states of three-dimensional topological insulators provide a model framework for studying massless Dirac electrons in two dimensions. Usually a step on the surface of a topological insulator is treated as a scatterer for the Dirac electrons, and the study of its effect is focused on the interference of the incident and scattered electrons. Then a major role plays the warping of the Dirac cone far from the Dirac point. The existence of another significant effect near the Dirac point brought about by the presence of steps is experimentally demonstrated here. Namely the band bending in the vicinity of steps leads to formation of 1D bound states in the corresponding potential wells. The observation of bound states in such potential wells in our scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy investigation of the surface of the topological insulator Bi2Se3 is reported. Numerical simulations support our conclusion and provide a recipe for the identification of such states.

  • Achievable noise performance of spectroscopic prototype DEPFET detectors

    摘要: A new generation of spectroscopic X-ray DEPFET detectors has been produced in the course of the detector development for the Wide Field Imager (WFI) of Athena. These devices served to perform a detailed analysis of the noise composition, which was enabled by the development of appropriate test algorithms. A result of the analysis is the distinction of different components, which sum up to the total noise. In particular the contribution of shot noise, white noise and 1/f noise to the readout noise is determined as well as the signal noise caused by the generation of charge carriers. The resulting parametrization enables the adaptation and optimization of operation modes to given purposes. The studied prototype detectors included 64×64 pixels with a linear gate design and provided an excellent noise, below 1.6 e?ENC at a readout time faster than 10 μs/pixel and a temperature of -80 ?C in rolling-shutter operation. This performance is enabled by an extended signal integration time. A further noise reduction is prevented by the signal noise, caused by charge carrier generation. In order to demonstrate the low noise properties of the DEPFET transistor, the measurement conditions were adapted and a noise of 0.95 e?ENC was measured at the expense of the sensor size — by operating only parts of the sensor in window mode — and dynamic range — by using the Al Kα line at about 1.49 keV for calibration.

  • Using a commercial mini-X-ray source for calibrating Bragg crystals

    摘要: In this paper we describe a procedure for calibration of Bragg crystals used for X-ray spectroscopy of laser plasmas. The method uses a relatively inexpensive commercially available X-ray source. By using the source to pump a metallic foil such as vanadium or titanium we were able to create a K-α emission source with minimal background radiation outside the desired photon energy. By using photon counting techniques with a CCD detector we were able to get absolute calibrations of curved and flat Bragg crystals in the 4–5 keV region. An important advantage of our method is that absolute calibration was not necessary either for the commercial source or the detector.

  • Spectroscopic DEPFETs at high frame rates using window mode

    摘要: An active pixel sensor like an array of DEPFET (DEpleted P-channel Field Effect Transistor) pixels allows for very flexible operation modes and an adaptability of the sensor design to the specific needs of the scientific instrument objectives. For a very high time resolution at the order of one microsecond, a full parallel readout of all pixels is required. Every readout node needs to be connected to readout electronics separately. Furthermore, to preserve a good spectroscopic performance, the integration of a storage functionality into each pixel prevents the influence of events occurring during the readout process and provoking an incorrect energy information. The energy of such events is detected incorrectly and is not falsifiable with a subsequent analysis. An active pixel sensor based on a DEPFET with internal storage and wired for full parallel readout is in production and will be available for testing in the future. Alternatively, the ability of an active pixel sensor to be read out in window (region-of-interest readout) mode allows for the investigation of the behavior at high frame rates at the order of 100 kHz for DEPFET devices with and without storage functionality.

  • Benchmarking of graphene-based materials: real commercial products vs. ideal graphene

    摘要: There are tens of industrial producers claiming to sell graphene and related materials (GRM), mostly as solid powders. Recently the quality of commercial GRM has been questioned, and procedures for GRM quality control were suggested using Raman Spectroscopy or Atomic Force Microscopy. Such techniques require dissolving the sample in solvents, possibly introducing artefacts. A more pragmatic approach is needed, based on fast measurements and not requiring any assumption on GRM solubility. To this aim, we report here an overview of the properties of commercial GRM produced by selected companies in Europe, USA and Asia. We benchmark: A) size, B) exfoliation grade and C) oxidation grade of each GRM vs. the ones of 'ideal' graphene and, most importantly, vs. what reported by the producer. In contrast to previous works, we report explicitly the names of the GRM producers and we do not re-dissolve the GRM in solvents, but only use techniques compatible with industrial powder metrology. A general common trend is observed: products having low defectivity (%sp2 bonds >95%) feature low surface area (<200 m2/g), while highly exfoliated GRM show a lower sp2 content, demonstrating that it is still challenging to exfoliate GRM at industrial level without adding defects.

  • <sup>125</sup> Te nuclear magnetic resonance and impedance spectroscopy study of topological insulator Bi <sub/>2</sub> Te <sub/>3</sub> nanoparticles mixed with insulating Al <sub/>2</sub> O <sub/>3</sub> nanoparticles

    摘要: We have studied topological insulator Bi2Te3 nanoparticles mixed with insulating Al2O3 nanoparticles by means of 125Te nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and impedance spectroscopy. Our 125Te NMR lineshape measurements revealed the Knight shift of a satellite peak that increased with the mixing ratio of the Al2O3 nanoparticles, indicating that the mixing increases the surface-to-volume ratio of the Bi2Te3 nanoparticles. It is also shown that the impedance spectroscopy can be employed as a simple and effective means of distinguishing the surface electrical properties of the topological insulators in general.

  • Paramagnetic surface defects in LiMgPO<sub>4</sub>

    摘要: The EPR spectra obtained at 300 K and 115 K are indicative of the existence of charged defects in LiMgPO4. The main imperfections are identified as a radical CO-3 (g=2) and a singly charged oxygen vacancy (g1=2.45, g2=2.20, g3=2.00). The presence of carbon-containing groups is proved by Raman spectroscopy. The assumption is made that the defects are located mainly on the surface of the grains. Thermoluminescent characteristics of LiMgPO4 annealed in atmospheres with different pO2 demonstrate that the surface defects impair the efficiency of LiMgPO4 as a dosimetric material.

  • Structural and vibrational properties of PVT grown BiTeCl microcrystals

    摘要: High-quality BiTeCl microcrystals are grown by the physical vapor transport (PVT) method without using a foreign transport agent. The plate-like microcrystals with a developed (0001) surface are up to ~500 μm in diameter. The grown crystal phase composition was identified by the X-ray single crystal structure analysis in space group P63mc: a = 4.2475(6) ?, c = 12.409(2) ?, Z = 2 (R = 0.0343). The BiTeCl microcrystal phase purity was verified by Raman microspectrometry under excitation at λ = 632.8 and 532.1 nm.

  • Raman-Enhanced Spectroscopy (RESpect) Distinguishes Anal Squamous Intraepithelial Lesions in HIV-Serodiscordant Couples

    摘要: HIV-positive individuals are at increased risk for pre-cancerous anal squamous intraepithelial lesions (SILs). Anal cytology and digital rectal examination are performed as screening tools but extensive training and appropriate instruments are required to follow-up on an abnormal anal cytology. Thus novel approaches to SIL evaluation could improve better healthcare follow up by efficient and timely diagnosis to offer treatment options. Recently, Raman-enhanced spectroscopy (RESpect) has emerged as a potential new tool for early identification of SIL. RESpect is a non-invasive, label-free, laser-based technique that identifies molecular composition of tissues and cells. HIV-serodiscordant couples had anal biopsies obtained during high resolution anoscopy. RESpect was performed on the specimens. Principal Component Analysis of the data identified differences between normal and abnormal tissue as well as HIV-positive and HIV-negative individuals of each couple even with similar pathologies. RESpect has the potential to change the paradigm of anal pathology diagnosis and could provide insight into different pathways leading to SIL in HIV-serodiscordant couples.

  • Dynamics of interatomic Coulombic decay in neon dimers by XUV-pump–XUV-probe spectroscopy

    摘要: We apply the Monte Carlo wave-packet approach to study the interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) dynamics of neon dimers after removing a 2s electron from one of the Ne atoms by one-photon absorption from an XUV pulse. This method reproduces well both the lifetime for the 2s inner-valence vacancy in Ne2+(2s?1) and the kinetic energy release (KER) spectra for the coincident Ne+ and Ne2+ fragments following triple ionization, i.e., two photoionizations and one ionization via ICD, of Ne2 measured in an XUV-pump–XUV-probe experiment [K. Schnorr et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 093402 (2013)]. Comparisons between the calculated and measured nuclear KER spectra give physical insights in the considered process. For example, an analysis of the ratios between the low- and high-energy peaks in the nuclear KER spectra for large delays provides an estimate of the photoionization cross sections for removing a 2p electron from the excited states in Ne2+(2s?1). Such comparisons also allow an estimate for the ICD rates for the 2s inner-valence vacancy in the single-site two-hole state in Ne2+(2s?12p?1). Finally, the influence of photon statistics of the free electron laser pulses on the nuclear KER spectra is considered.
