  • Gramicidin Lateral Distribution in Phospholipid Membranes: Fluorescence Phasor Plots and Statistical Mechanical Model

    摘要: When using small mole fraction increments to study gramicidins in phospholipid membranes, we found that the phasor dots of intrinsic ?uorescence of gramicidin D and gramicidin A in dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) unilamellar and multilamellar vesicles exhibit a biphasic change with peptide content at 0.143 gramicidin mole fraction. To understand this phenomenon, we developed a statistical mechanical model of gramicidin/DMPC mixtures. Our model assumes a sludge-like mixture of ?uid phase and aggregates of rigid clusters. In the ?uid phase, gramicidin monomers are randomly distributed. A rigid cluster is formed by a gramicidin dimer and DMPC molecules that are condensed to the dimer, following particular stoichiometries (critical gramicidin mole fractions, Xcr including 0.143). Rigid clusters form aggregates in which gramicidin dimers are regularly distributed, in some cases, even to superlattices. At Xcr, the size of cluster aggregates and regular distributions reach a local maximum. Before a similar model was developed for cholesterol/DMPC mixtures (Sugar and Chong (2012) J. Am. Chem. Soc. 134, 1164–1171) and here the similarities and differences are discussed between these two models.

  • Active cluster crystals

    摘要: We study the appearance and properties of cluster crystals (solids in which the unit cell is occupied by a cluster of particles) in a two-dimensional system of self-propelled active Brownian particles with repulsive interactions. Self-propulsion deforms the clusters by depleting particle density inside, and for large speeds it melts the crystal. Continuous ?eld descriptions at several levels of approximation allow us to identify the relevant physical mechanisms.

  • Distributions of steady states in a network of degenerate optical parametric oscillators in solving combinatorial optimization problems

    摘要: We investigate a network of degenerate optical parametric oscillators (DOPOs) as a model of the coherent Ising machine, an architecture for solving Ising problems. The network represents the interaction in the Ising model, which is a generalization of a previously proposed one for the two-DOPO case. Dynamics of the DOPOs is described by the Fokker-Planck equation in the positive P representation. We obtain approximate distribution of steady states for arbitrary Ising problems under some ansatz. Using the method of statistical mechanics, we analytically demonstrate that the most probable states in a particular range of the parameters correspond to the true optimal states for two rather simple problems, i.e., fully connected ferromagnetic coupling without or with binary random fields. In particular, for the random-field problem, the distribution correctly detects the phase transition that occurs in the target Ising model with varying the magnitude of the fields.

  • Evaluation of wood variation based on the eigenvalue distribution of near infrared spectral matrix

    摘要: A method to evaluate the wood variation based on the eigenvalue analysis for the near infrared spectral matrix is presented. The set of eigenvalues calculated from the variance-covariance matrix is treated as the Hamiltonian, which represents the energy eigenstate of the wood, and the wood variation is discussed from the viewpoints of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. To determine the validity of this idea, two sample groups, one having a high and the other having a low modulus of elasticity (Efr), are prepared, because they obviously have different molecular configurations in the cell wall. The eigenvalues of the high Efr group are widely distributed compared with those of the low Efr group. The probability corresponding to each energy eigenstate of the low Efr group is flatly distributed compared with that of the high Efr group. These results indicate that the low Efr wood has a more disordered structure than the high Efr wood. The Helmholtz free energy is higher in the high Efr group; in contrast, the entropy is higher in the low Efr group. The results obtained in this study are consistent with the previous knowledge with regard to the relationship between the mechanical properties and the microscopic structure of wood. Hence, the eigenvalues obtained from the NIR spectral matrix provide useful information to assess the variation and stability of wood.
