  • Cross-Configuration Substrate Integrated Waveguide Beamforming Network for 1D and 2D Beam Patterns

    摘要: This paper presents the simulated and measured results of a dual-layer substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) beamforming network utilizing an 8 × 8 cross-con?guration Butler matrix over a frequency range of 28.5 to 31.5 GHz. By arranging the input ports on the bottom SIW layer and employing dual-layer passband ?lters as a detachment point, the top SIW layer can be interchanged with the purpose of exploring one-dimensional and two-dimensional broadside beam patterns. Although Butler matrices are not typically utilized for beamforming in this con?guration, two examples of interchangeable top layer arrays are demonstrated; the ?rst being a 2 × 8 slot antenna array for 1-D scanning, and the second being a 2 × 4 center-slot array for 2-D scanning. Each of the beamforming network’s simulated and measured 10 dB bandwidth is demonstrated over a range of 28.5 to 31.5 GHz. Additional design details and dimensions are speci?ed for the aforementioned passband ?lter transitions, as well as for each of the slot antenna arrays.

  • Design of Compact, Single-Layered Substrate Integrated Waveguide Filtenna with Parasitic Patch

    摘要: A compact, single-layered substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) filtenna with parasitic patch is synthesized and designed. A half-mode substrate-integrated rectangular cavity (HMSIRC) is adopted as the first stage resonator to reduce the circuit size. A parasitic patch functioning as the last stage resonator as well as the radiator is arranged closely to the HMSIRC so as to enhance the operational bandwidth and facilitate the filtering performance. Two broadside radiation nulls are realized at both the upper and lower band-edges to sharpen the band-edge roll-off rate: One is generated by the interaction between the HMSIRC and the parasitic patch, and the other is introduced by placing two pairs of shorting posts under the parasitic patch. The standard filter synthesis technology is utilized to guide the filtenna design. The optimized prototype was fabricated and measured. The measured results, in good agreement with simulated values, indicated the proposed filtenna provides a 5.1% fractional bandwidth, a maximum realized gain of 6.3 dBi, and a flat passband gain response along with excellent out-of-band selectivity, even with ultra-low profile 0.015λ0 and small volume 0.005λ0^3.

  • Compact Balanced Substrate Integrated Waveguide Filter with Low Insertion Loss

    摘要: A balanced substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) ?lter is proposed by etching transverse slots on the top surface. The SIW structures between each two adjacent slots are resonators operating at TE20δ mode for differential-mode (DM) operation and at TE10δ and TE30δ modes for common-mode (CM) operation. The proposed TE20δ-mode resonator is much shorter than the traditional TE201-mode resonator, which causes the whole design to be compact and low loss. Furthermore, the strong electric coupling formed by slots make it have wider bandwidth when compared with the state-of-the-arts. A prototype is designed at 3.5 GHz with the size of 1.2λd× 0.83λd (λd is the wavelength in dielectric at the center frequency), the minimum insertion loss of 0.91 dB, the 3-dB fractional bandwidth (FBW) of 16%, and the FBW for 20 dB CM suppression of 79%.

  • A planar eight‐way compact substrate integrated waveguide based radial power divider with broadband performance

    摘要: A compact broadband eight-way substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) based radial power divider at C-band is presented in the article. Bandwidth enhancement is achieved by employing planar impedance transformer consisting of an annular slot and circular patch at the input and output feed positions. The equivalent circuit analysis helps in the optimization of the annular slot and circular patch on the substrate. The proposed compact power divider has fractional bandwidth of 53.5% for 15 dB input return loss. Broadband characteristics are achieved without using any bulky mechanical arrangement for feed matching. It has a size of 0.72 λg 2 and the measured amplitude imbalance is within 0.5 dB at the center frequency of 6.6 GHz.

  • SUBSTRATE INTEGRATED WAVEGUIDE FILTER WITH IMPROVED STOPBAND PERFORMANCE USING LTCC TECHNOLOGY

    摘要: A novel multi-layer third-order substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) bandpass ?lter with improved lower stopband performance is proposed. TE201-mode in folded-SIW cavity is utilized to implement negative cross coupling, and the TE101-mode is taken as a non-resonating node (NRN) for implementing bypass coupling. A circular aperture etched on the middle metal layer is used to realize coupling between source and the second SIW cavity. Then, three transmission zeros located below the passband can be obtained to improve stopband attenuation. Meanwhile, better spurious suppression performance above passband is achieved. A ?lter sample is designed and fabricated with multi-layer low-temperature co-?red ceramic (LTCC) technology. The measured S-parameters agree well with the simulated ones, with its predicted good performance.

  • Programmable Hybrid Circuit Based on Reconfigurable SPP and Spatial Waveguide Modes

    摘要: A programmable hybrid circuit is proposed, which is composed of two reconfigurable spoof surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waveguides loaded with varactor diodes and a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW). By manipulating their dispersion behaviors, the band-pass effect is achieved in the hybrid circuit, in which the upper and lower cutoff frequencies are determined by the SPP waveguide and SIW, respectively. When two SPP waveguides are configured to have the same cutoff frequency that is higher than the SIW’s cutoff, the proposed circuit can realize a power division; when one SPP waveguide is reconfigured to reject the waves from SIW, this circuit will be a band-pass filter. As a typical application, a logic “OR” gate with 2-bit coding is designed by programming the bias voltages applied to the varactor diodes loaded on the unit structures of the SPP waveguides. All functions are demonstrated by measurement results that agree with numerical simulations very well. The work provides more potential applications in multifunctional integrated circuits and digital communication systems.

  • A Wideband Substrate Integrated Waveguide Fed Open Slot Antenna

    摘要: In this work, we introduce a new structure of an open slot antenna excited by a substrate-integrated-waveguide (SIW) feed to obtain a wide bandwidth of about 60%. Different from conventional slot antennas, two short sides of the slot are open which do not connect to any metal. To excite the open slot, a SIW section is used as the feed. In this way, the antenna is constructed on a single laminate which includes the feeding structure and the radiator. The open slot structure serves as a single-mode resonator with a low Q-factor, and thus contributes a much wider bandwidth than that of conventional slot antennas simultaneously maintains stable radiation performance. Intensive parametric studies were implemented to provide a design guideline. To verify our design, antenna prototypes were fabricated and measured. The measured results validate that the antenna achieves a wide impedance bandwidth of 59.3% from 50.8 GHz to 93.6 GHz. Meanwhile, the radiation patterns keep stable over the entire operating frequency band. This new type of slot antenna with wide bandwidth and planar structure is a good candidate for mmW applications.

  • A novel compact dual-mode SIW filter with wide rejection band and selective response

    摘要: A compact dual-mode substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) bandpass filter with wide upper stopband is presented. A cross shaped slot is etched on the top plane of SIW cavity to alter the second mode (TE201) current distribution and move it closer to the first mode (TE101), to enhance the bandwidth flatness. Removing few via near the excitation ports, provides longer path for the current to resonance and give us the transmission zeros in a simple way. Another 2 TZs are used to improve the stopband by suppressing higher order modes resonances. The designed filter is fabricated and tested and a very good result is achieved to confirm the design idea. There is also a good agreement between the measured and Full Wave simulated results. The fabricated sample realizes a fractional bandwidth of 9.1% at 7.5 GHz center frequency and 2 zeros at 12.5 GHz and 15 GHz.

  • A compact dual-band bandpass SIW filter using uniplanar combination of the CRLH and resonant type metamaterials

    摘要: A new manner of obtaining dual bandpass behaviour in substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) using a uniplanar combination of composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission line and complimentary double split single ring resonator (CDSSRR) is presented and analysed in this paper. The proposed dual band structure has the advantage of miniaturisation due to the presence of both the passbands below the characteristic cuto? frequency of the SIW.A high passband transmission zero overcomes the poor frequency selectivity, and the two resonant frequencies are independently controllable. There are very low insertion losses in both passbands as compared to DGS structures and fabrication simplicity is ensured due to an intact ground. The potential for application of the proposed structure to the design of completely planar miniaturised dual band bandpass metamaterial ?lters has been veri?ed by fabricating a two-stage ?lter based on the proposed combination. The measured results are in good agreement with the simulation results.

  • Continuously tunable crossover based on HMSIW

    摘要: A frequency-tuning crossover based on half-mode substrate-integrated waveguide (HMSIW) is presented for the ?rst time. Two HMSIW transmission lines are parallelly arranged to form the four-port crossover. Three tunable capacitors placed between the HMSIW transmission lines are used to obtain the tunable passband. For veri?cation, both simulated and measured results are given and good agreement between the simulation and measurement is observed. The measured passband can be tuned in a frequency range from 2.2 to 5.0 GHz (tuning range of 78%) with better than 19 dB return loss and 15 dB isolation, while the insertion loss varies from 0.93 to 1.97 dB.
