On electromagnetic surface waves supported by an isotropic chiral material
摘要: Electromagnetic surface waves supported by an isotropic chiral material were investigated via the associated canonical boundary-value problem. Specifically, two scenarios were considered: surface waves guided by the planar interface of an isotropic chiral material and (a) an isotropic dielectric (or plasmonic) material and (b) a uniaxial dielectric (or plasmonic) material. Both plasmonic and non-plasmonic achiral partnering materials were investigated. In scenario (a) surface waves akin to surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) waves were excited, while in scenario (b) surface waves akin to Dyakonov waves and akin to SPP waves were excited. For numerical studies, an isotropic chiral material capable of simultaneously supporting attenuation and amplification of plane waves, depending upon circular polarization state, was used. The amplitude of the SPP-like waves could be either amplified or attenuated, depending upon the relative permittivity of the isotropic plasmonic partnering material for scenario (a), or depending upon the direction of propagation relative to the optic axis of the uniaxial plasmonic partnering material for scenario (b).

Surface plasmon polariton at the interface of dielectric and graphene medium using Kerr effect
摘要: We theoretically investigate the control of surface plasmon polariton (SPP) generated at the interface of dielectric and graphene medium under Kerr nonlinearity. The controlled Kerr nonlinear signal of probe light beam in a dielectric medium is used to generate SPPs at the interface of dielectric and graphene medium. The positive, negative absorption, and dispersion properties of SPPs are modi?ed and controlled by the control and Kerr ?elds. A large ampli?cation (negative absorption) is noted for SPPs under the Kerr nonlinearity. The normal/anomalous slope of dispersion and propagation length of SPPs is modi?ed and controlled with Kerr nonlinearity. This leads to signi?cant variation in slow and fast SPP propagation. The controlled slow and fast SPP propagation may predict signi?cant applications in nano-photonics, optical tweezers, photovoltaic devices, plasmonster, and sensing technology.

Robust Optimization of Nanoslit Array Sensor Based on Extraordinary Optical Transmission
摘要: A robust optimization approach for plasmonic periodic array sensor based on extraordinary optical transmission is proposed using Kriging surrogate models to reduce the effects of uncertainty in various manufacturing processes while maintaining sensor performance. For systematic design with reasonable computation cost, the author adopt the universal Kriging models whose regression function is a polynomial. The gradient index and the multiobjective genetic algorithm are chosen as a robustness measure and a global optimization tool, respectively. The figure of merit and the gradient index are set as two objective functions, and the design variables are the slit width and height, respectively. The optical properties of interest are investigated using the finite-element method. The numerical optimization results show the proposed scheme to be powerful and efficient in designing nanoslity array sensors based on extraordinary optical transmission with fabrication uncertainty.

Surface plasmon induced atom localization in a tripod-type four level atomic system
摘要: We demonstrate the phenomenon of atom localization using surface plasmon polariton absorption/dispersion spectrums. A single and double localized peaks are measured on the absorption/dispersion spectrums of surface plasmon polariton at di?erent parameters and directions of propagation of the control ?elds. We show localized peaks with ~ 80% probability on dispersion spectrum and 50 % probability on the absorption spectrum. The localized peaks observed are shown to depend on strength of the control ?eld and the electrical conductivity.

摘要: Surface plasmon resonance sensors based on the resonant transmission characteristics of metal hole arrays are fabricated using conductive inkjet printing for operation in the terahertz region. The response of the sensing surfaces is measured using terahertz time domain spectroscopy. The addition of a layer of glycerol on the surface that is much thinner than the wavelength of the incident wave is simulated and results in a significant shift of the resonance frequency. This indicates the possibility of realising a flexible low-cost sensor for chemical and biological substances.
