  • Progress in development of a new luminescence setup at the FinEstBeAMS beamline of the MAX IV laboratory

    摘要: FinEstBeAMS is a new materials science beamline at the 1.5 GeV storage ring of the MAX IV Laboratory in Lund, Sweden. It has been built based on grazing incidence monochromatization of synchrotron light, which allows to cover a remarkably wide excitation energy range from ultraviolet to soft x-rays (4.5-1450 eV). A new mobile luminescence spectroscopy end station has been commissioned with design benefitting from the advantages of a high flux elliptically polarizing undulator light source. We report on the design of the luminescence end station, its technical realization and performance achieved so far. Special attention is paid to the experimental challenges for luminescence spectroscopy under grazing incidence excitation conditions. The first luminescence results obtained demonstrate a reliable performance of the advanced setup at FinEstBeAMS.

  • Current-induced domain wall oscillations in a nanowire imaged by time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy

    摘要: We study reversible domain wall motion in half-ring Ni80Fe20 nanowires on a nanosecond (ns) timescale in a truly current-induced pump-probe experiment using an energy filtered, aberration-corrected photoemission electron microscope. The x-ray magnetic circular dichroism signal is probed at different time delays before, during and after the current pulse in a stroboscopic mode with circularly polarized synchrotron radiation in the energy range of the Fe L3-edge (707 eV). We observe lateral domain wall oscillations with a frequency of ~ 0.4 GHz. Comparing the results to a proposed string model, we find that the domain wall oscillations can be described as string-like asymmetric oscillations.

  • Formation of a Track Template during PETP Irradiation with High-Energy Helium Ions for the Template Synthesis of Regular Microstructures

    摘要: The features of obtaining track membranes (TMs) with the help of a classical cyclotron situated at Tomsk Polytechnic University are discussed. It is demonstrated that TMs can be employed as templates. The results of research into columnar nanostructures formed with the help of a TM template are presented. The creation of regular microstructures is investigated using deep X-ray lithography with synchrotron radiation and templates made of track membranes.

    摘要: PHASE is a software tool for physical optics simulation based on the stationary phase approximation method. The code is under continuous development since about 20 years and has been used for instance for fundamental studies and ray tracing of various beamlines at the Swiss Light Source. Along with the planning for SwissFEL a new hard X-ray free electron laser under construction, new features have been added to permit practical performance predictions including diffraction effects which emerge with the fully coherent source. We present the application of the package on the example of the ARAMIS 1 beamline at SwissFEL. The X-ray pulse calculated with GENESIS and given as an electrical field distribution has been propagated through the beamline to the sample position. We demonstrate the new features of PHASE like the treatment of measured figure errors, apertures and coatings of the mirrors and the application of Fourier optics propagators for free space propagation.

  • Conformal image-guided microbeam radiation therapy at the ESRF biomedical beamline ID17

    摘要: Purpose: Upcoming veterinary trials in microbeam radiation therapy (MRT) demand for more advanced irradiation techniques than in preclinical research with small animals. The treatment of deep-seated tumors in cats and dogs with MRT requires sophisticated irradiation geometries from multiple ports, which impose further efforts to spare the normal tissue surrounding the target. Methods: This work presents the development and benchmarking of a precise patient alignment protocol for MRT at the biomedical beamline ID17 of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF). The positioning of the patient prior to irradiation is verified by taking x-ray projection images from different angles. Results: Using four external fiducial markers of 1.7 mm diameter and computed tomography-based treatment planning, a target alignment error of less than 2 mm can be achieved with an angular deviation of less than 2?. Minor improvements on the protocol and the use of smaller markers indicate that even a precision better than 1 mm is technically feasible. Detailed investigations concerning the imaging dose lead to the conclusion that doses for skull radiographs lie in the same range as dose reference levels for human head radiographs. A currently used online dose monitor for MRT has been proven to give reliable results for the imaging beam. Conclusions: The ESRF biomedical beamline ID17 is technically ready to apply conformal image-guided MRT from multiple ports to large animals during future veterinary trials.

  • Fast global orbit feedback system in PLS-II

    摘要: The transverse position of the electron beam in the Pohang Light Source-II is stabilized by the global orbit feedback system. A slow orbit feedback system has been operating at 2 Hz, and a fast orbit feedback (FOFB) system at 813 Hz was installed recently. This FOFB system consists of 96 electron-beam-position monitors, 48 horizontal fast correctors, 48 vertical fast correctors and Versa Module Europa bus control system. We present the design and implementation of the FOFB system and its test result. Simulation analysis is presented and future improvements are suggested.

  • Polarization Dependence in the Carbon K-edge Photofragmentation of MAPDST Photoresist: an Experimental and Theoretical Study

    摘要: The use of tunable soft X-rays from synchrotron radiation (SR) opens the possibility of inducing selective chemical bond scission due to its high localization in a chemical bond. The selective fragmentation of a potential extreme ultraviolet (EUV) resist, poly(4-(methacryloyloxy) phenyldimethylsulfoniumtriflate (MAPDST), was examined using inner shell polarized SR excitation. Selective bond dissociation processes were studied using a combination of carbon K-edge excitation, angle-resolved irradiation, and NEXAFS spectroscopy. Detailed theoretical calculations carried out with the FEFF9 modeling program allowed the interpretation of all the observed experimental features. NEXAFS results indicated that the aromatic group of the polymer lies parallel to the substrate surface. FEFF9 theoretical calculations confirmed the origin of the splitting of the main C 1s →π*C=C resonances observed. The transition C1s → πα*C=C (285.3 eV) can be associated with the four internal carbons of the aromatic ring. The transition C1s → πβ*C=C (286.9 eV) was assigned to the carbon atoms attached to the oxygen and sulfur atoms. According to the theoretical calculations, the origin of the splitting is due to the different absolute energy of C1s. The results showed a strong selective dissociation effect when the excitation energy was tuned to C1s → πα*C=C transition and the electric field vector of the photon was perpendicular to the substrate plane (grazing angle). On the contrary, other transitions were in general less affected. When the SR irradiation angle changed from grazing to normal incidence, the intensity of the C1s → π*C=C transitions was almost unaffected by 285.3 eV photons. The experimental results suggest that site-specific core excitation combined with the direction of the electric field vector of the incidence SR, can efficiently control the localization of the photon energy to produce selective bond dissociation in MAPDST thin films. The results presented here can also be useful to guide new processing lithographic methods for EUVL using the polarization properties of light in ordered polymeric thin films.

  • Study of materials structure physics of isomorphic LiNbO <sub/>3</sub> and LiTaO <sub/>3</sub> ferroelectrics by synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction

    摘要: Electron charge density studies of stoichiometric LiNbO3 and LiTaO3 ferroelectrics have been carried out by analyzing the synchrotron radiation X-ray powder di?raction data using a combination of the Rietveld and maximum entropy methods. The clear relationships between the Nb(Ta)–O bond length, the electron charge density on the Nb(Ta)–O bond, and the phase transition temperature TC are revealed for isomorphic structures. Nb(Ta)–O bonding plays an important role in the elevation of TC. The TC in LiNbO3 being higher than that in LiTaO3 is attributed to the larger lattice distortion of the Nb–O oxygen octahedron in LiNbO3. The validity of estimating TC for LiNbO3 family crystals from the degree of lattice distortion in the ferroelectric structure is discussed.

  • Radiation reaction in electrona??beam interactions with high-intensity lasers

    摘要: Charged particles accelerated by electromagnetic fields emit radiation, which must, by the conservation of momentum, exert a recoil on the emitting particle. The force of this recoil, known as radiation reaction, strongly affects the dynamics of ultrarelativistic electrons in intense electromagnetic fields. Such environments are found astrophysically, e.g. in neutron star magnetospheres, and will be created in laser–matter experiments in the next generation of high-intensity laser facilities. In many of these scenarios, the energy of an individual photon of the radiation can be comparable to the energy of the emitting particle, which necessitates modelling not only of radiation reaction, but quantum radiation reaction. The worldwide development of multi-petawatt laser systems in large-scale facilities, and the expectation that they will create focussed electromagnetic fields with unprecedented intensities > 1023 Wcm?2, has motivated renewed interest in these effects. In this paper I review theoretical and experimental progress towards understanding radiation reaction, and quantum effects on the same, in high-intensity laser fields that are probed with ultrarelativistic electron beams. In particular, we will discuss how analytical and numerical methods give insight into new kinds of radiation–reaction-induced dynamics, as well as how the same physics can be explored in experiments at currently existing laser facilities.

  • Connecting Diffraction-Based Strain with Macroscopic Stresses in Laser Powder Bed Fused Ti-6Al-4V

    摘要: The laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) production process often results in large residual stress (RS) in the parts. Nondestructive techniques to determine RS are badly needed. However, a reliable quantification of macro-RS (i.e., stress at the component level) by means of diffraction-based techniques is still a great challenge, because the link between diffraction-based strain and macro-RS is not trivial. In this study, we experimentally determine (by means of in-situ synchrotron radiation diffraction) this link for LPBF Ti-6Al-4V. We compare our results with commonly used models to determine the so-called diffraction elastic constants (DECs). We show that LPBF materials possess different DECs than wrought alloys, simply because their microstructural and mechanical properties are different. We also show that the existing models can be used to calculate DECs only if high accuracy of the RS values is not required. If the peculiarities of the microstructure have to be taken into account (as is the case of additively manufactured materials), a radically new approach is desirable.
