  • Improvement of teaching near-infrared spectroscopic analysis for undergraduates

    摘要: With the growing acceptance and expansion of near-infrared spectroscopy as a potential tool in chemical research and industrial quality and process control, it has also become an academic challenge for University teachers, to teach students the necessary theoretical and instrumental principles of this spectroscopic technique. Using the elective open experiment courses and carefully designing their scientific content can produce a double teaching effect; students participate in discipline competitions under careful guidance by teachers, and they can achieve particularly good results; graduation thesis is another way to improve the ability of students in learning and comprehending the near-infrared technology. Years of practical experience have proven that the above approaches are feasible.

  • Exploration on Teaching Methods for Applied Optics Course of Printing Specialty

    摘要: Printing engineering is an interdisciplinary specialty which involves a lot of intercross subjects such as optical engineering, information engineering, material science and engineering, mechanical engineering, control science and engineering, computer engineering, software engineering and so on. Nowadays, as those subjects progress, the content of printing engineering specialty is increasingly expanded, which places additional difficulty to the printing engineering education. The applied optics course of printing specialty aims at explaining the fundamental principles of optics which involve in printing-related domain. Therefore, it is of great significance for students to understand the basic imaging rules of the related equipments and thus further understand the whole subject. This study describes our teaching experience for applied optics course in school of printing and packaging, Wuhan University in China. The current teaching problems of the printing specialty as a whole were firstly collected by interview and questionnaire method. Afterwards, basing on the analysis of the problems, the specific teaching methods were proposed. The results showed that the teaching objectives were almost achieved and the vast majority of students were glad to accept such teaching methods.

  • Learning Micromanipulation, Part 2: Term Projects in Practice

    摘要: This paper describes the activities that have been necessary to design, fabricate, control and test some low-cost test stands independently developed by the students enrolled in the course of Micro-Nano sensors and actuators for the postgraduate course in Industrial Nanotechnologies Engineering of the University of Rome La Sapienza. The construction and use of these test stands are an essential part of teaching and learning methods whose theoretical bases have been presented in the companion paper (Part 1). Each test stand is composed of a compliant structure and a control system, which consists of a programmable control micro-card equipped with sensors and actuators. The compliant structure consists of a compliant mechanism whose geometry is achieved by scaling some previously developed silicon micromanipuators and microactuators up to the macroscale by a factor of 20. This macroscale model offered a kinesthetic tool to improve the understanding of the original microsystems and their working principles. The original silicon micromechanisms have been previously presented in the literature by the research group after design and deep reactive-ion etching (DRIE) microfabrication. Scaling from micro to macro size was quite easy because the original DRIE masks were bestowed to the students in the form of CAD ?les. The samples at the macroscale have been fabricated by means of recently available low-cost 3D printers after some necessary modi?cations of the mask geometry. The purpose of the whole work (Parts 1 and 2) was the improvement of the ef?ciency of an educational process in the ?eld of microsystem science. By combining the two companion papers, concerning, respectively, the theoretical basis of the teaching methods and the students’ achievements, it is possible to conclude that, in a given class, there may be some preferred activities that are more ef?cient than others in terms of advancements and satisfaction.

  • Assessing a Virtual Laboratory in Optics As a Complement to On-Site Teaching

    摘要: Contribution: There are many on-line resources available to learn about optics and photonics, but no assessment tools exist to evaluate the learning achievements. This paper presents an assessment framework whose validity has been proven on a course with over 70 engineering students. Background: There is evidence that on-line resources complement the learning experience in many engineering fields. In the context of optics and photonics, it may be worthwhile to assess the learning experience of engineering students taking a virtual lab as a complement to on-site, traditional lab. The assessment should use empiric, measurable results that demonstrates the effectiveness of the didactic innovation proposed, based on the Technology Acceptance Model. Intended Outcomes: Students using OPTILAB software are expected to be able to demonstrate their learning of optics and photonics by having a good score in the specific question about optical diffraction included in the final exam. Application Design: OPTILAB software, simulating the optical diffraction produced by different apertures, was developed. Students use OPTILAB to check, in advance, the experimental results they will obtain in the on-site lab, with various optical apertures and settings. This is expected to make the on-site lab session more efficient, minimize errors that inevitably occur when students are confronted with a new physical phenomenon, and ultimately increase the students learning experience. Findings: The marks obtained in the exercise about optics in the final exam by the experimental set (~67.3%) and control set (~49.2%) demonstrate that OPTILAB can improve students’ learning experience in optics. The findings from the survey based on the Technology Acceptance Model are also discussed.

  • A novel 3D path extraction method for arc welding robot based on stereo structured light sensor

    摘要: With the rapid development of computer vision and industrial technology, the requirements of the intelligent welding robots are increasing in the real industrial production. The traditional teaching-playback mode and the off-line programming mode cannot meet the automation demand and self-adaptive ability of welding robots. In order to improve the efficiency of welding robots, this paper proposes a novel three-dimensional(3D) path extraction method of weld seams based on stereo structured light sensor. Faced with the low efficiency of the line structured light and the poor robustness of passive vision, the seam extraction based on point cloud processing algorithm is proposed which could well adapt to the weld seams with different types and different groove sizes. Meanwhile, the position information and pose information of weld seam are established to serve the 3D path teaching of welding robot.The experimental results show that the maximum path extraction error of V-type butt joint is less than 0.7mm. The proposed scheme could well serve for the 3D path teaching task before welding.
