Ultrafast response of harmonic modelocked THz lasers
摘要: The use of fundamental modelocking to generate short terahertz (THz) pulses and THz frequency combs from semiconductor lasers has become a routine affair, using quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) as a gain medium. However, unlike classic laser diodes, no demonstrations of harmonic modelocking, active or passive, have been shown in THz QCLs, where multiple pulses per round trip are generated when the laser is modulated at the harmonics of the cavity’s fundamental round-trip frequency. Here, using time-resolved THz techniques, we show for the ?rst time harmonic injection and mode-locking in which THz QCLs are modulated at the harmonics of the round-trip frequency. We demonstrate the generation of the harmonic electrical beatnote within a QCL, its injection locking to an active modulation and its direct translation to harmonic pulse generation using the unique ultrafast nature of our approach. Finally, we show indications of self-starting harmonic emission, i.e., without external modulation, where the QCL operates exclusively on a harmonic (up to its 15th harmonic) of the round-trip frequency. This behaviour is supported by time-resolved simulations of induced gain and loss in the system and shows the importance of the electronic, as well as photonic, nature of QCLs. These results open up the prospect of passive harmonic modelocking and THz pulse generation, as well as the generation of low-noise microwave generation in the hundreds of GHz region.

摘要: High-power terahertz pulse generation and its polarization and frequency control by optical rectification with nonlinear organic crystals were studied. Terahertz pulses up to 730 nJ/pulse was generated from a DAST crystal pumped by 250 μJ femotosecond laser pulses with a central wavelength of 1500 nm. The terahertz peak electric field is estimated as 860 kV/cm if we focus the terahertz beam to φ=300 μm spot, which is expected to nonlinear material control application. We proposed the high-power terahertz polarization pulse shaping using the double stacked nonlinear organic crystals excited with tailored pump pulses. Through the terahertz modulation of pump pulses, the waveform shaping of the high-power terahertz pulses are expected, which leads to selective excitation of molecules or spin waves.

Coherently controlled generation of single-cycle terahertz pulses from a thin layer of nonlinear medium with low-frequency resonances
摘要: We propose a scheme to generate single-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses via reflection of an optical femtosecond pulse train from a thin layer of nonlinear resonant medium. Our method is based on the coherent control of low-frequency oscillations and free induction decay in the medium. The specific single-cycle shape of generated THz pulses requires a plane wave front and detection in the near field. Our theoretical results pave the way to a new, simple, and highly efficient way to generate single-cycle waveshape-tunable THz pulses.

摘要: A detection module for the heterodyne electro-optic sampling of terahertz pulses composed of a GaAs plate inserted into a tapered parallel plate waveguide has been designed and fabricated. The detector was installed into a standard terahertz time-domain spectrometer with a 1.5-μm femtosecond laser as a light source. The spectral bandwidth of 3.5 THz and dynamic range of 5 orders of magnitude were experimentally demonstrated, even with a photo-conductive antenna designed for 800-nm as an emitter.

Laser‐Driven Strong‐Field Terahertz Sources
摘要: A review on the recent development of intense laser-driven terahertz (THz) sources is provided here. The technologies discussed include various types of sources based on optical rectification (OR), spintronic emitters, and laser-filament-induced plasma. The emphasis is on OR using pump pulses with tilted intensity front. Illustrative examples of newly emerging applications are briefly discussed, in particular strong-field THz control of materials and acceleration and manipulation of charged particles.
