  • Determination of nanoscale titanium oxide thin film phase composition using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy valence band analysis

    摘要: The phase compositions of nanoscale thick titania films on the titanium were determined using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy valence band analysis for the first time, by deconvoluting the two-peak structure of valence band into five peaks and analysing the relative peak area. The titania films of thickness varying from about 2 nm to 8 μm were obtained by the air oxidation of commercially pure titanium at different temperatures. The titania films formed on titanium for oxidizing temperatures up to 200 °C were amorphous, with thickness < 10 nm. The sub-stoichiometric oxides present at the TiO2-Ti interface were composed of Ti3+, Ti2+ and Ti1+ states when the film of thickness was < 10 nm. At 300 °C, when the titania film thickness was < 20 nm, it was fully converted to rutile phase and remained stable up to 1000 °C. A broadening of full-width half-maxima of the core level peaks for the titania layers was attributed to the presence of surface hydroxyl group and stress gradient within the oxide layer. The absence of metastable anatase phase in the titania layers at lower temperatures was attributed to the presence of high stresses within the oxide layers owing to their nanoscale thickness.

  • Influence of water-controlled release process on the physical and chemical property of nanosize TiO <sub/>2</sub> particles

    摘要: The water-controlled release process (WCRP) was utilized for the synthesis of TiO2 photocatalyst. The effect of alkylated esterified WCRP system on the morphology, specific surface area (SSA) and photocatalytic activity of TiO2 were studied systematically. By changing the structure of alcohol and acid involved in the esterification reaction, we found that the SSA and photocatalytic activity of TiO2 obtained in an ethanol/acetic acid reaction mixture showed the best results. Interestingly, the TiO2 obtained in t-butanol/acetic acid contains both the anatase and rutile phase, while the other systems only possessed anatase phases. The conditions of ethanol and acetic acid esterification were optimized and the experimental results showed that the SSA of nano-TiO2 was improved by shorting the reaction time or adding an organic solvent, which can form an azeotrope with water, but no effect on the photocatalytic activity could be observed. The reaction mechanism of esterified WCRP system was furthermore studied by NMR spectroscopy, showing three kinds of reaction, namely esterification, etherification and hydrolysis.

  • Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Loaded onto Polymer-Inorganic Composite Materials and Their Regulated Catalytic Activity

    摘要: We present a novel approach for the preparation of polymer-TiO2 composite microgels. These microgels were prepared by the in situ hydrolysis and condensation of titanium tetrabutoxide (TBOT) in a mixed ethanol/acetonitrile solvent system, using poly(styrene-co-N-isopropylacrylamide)/poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-methacrylic acid) (P(St-NIPAM/P(NIPAM-co-MAA)) as the core component. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were controllably loaded onto the polymer-TiO2 composite microgels through the reduction of an ammoniacal silver solution in ethanol catalyzed by NaOH. The results showed that the P(St-NIPAM)/P(NIPAM-co-MAA)-TiO2 (polymer-TiO2) organic-inorganic composite microgels were less thermally sensitive than the polymer gels themselves, owing to rigid O–Ti–O chains introduced into the three-dimensional framework of the polymer microgels. The sizes of the AgNPs and their loading amount were controlled by adjusting the initial concentration of [Ag(NH3)2]+. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band of the P(St-NIPAM)/P(NIPAM-co-MAA)-TiO2/Ag (polymer-TiO2/Ag) composite microgels can be tuned by changing the temperature of the environment. The catalytic activities of the polymer-TiO2/Ag composite microgels were investigated in the NaBH4 reduction of 4-nitrophenol. It was demonstrated that the organic-inorganic network chains of the polymer microgels not only favor the mass transfer of the reactant but can also modulate the catalytic activities of the AgNPs by tuning the temperature.

  • Photocatalytic Degradation of Methylene Blue and Phenol Using TiO2/Activated-Carbon Composite Catalysts

    摘要: Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and phenol were conducted separately in aqueous solutions using titania-activated carbon composites. Activated carbon composites of different textural features and light of different wavelength or energy were used in order explore their effects on the performance of titania-activated carbon catalysts. The catalysts (TiAC1, TiAC2 and TiAC3) were prepared by impregnating activated carbon supports with an aqueous suspension of titanium precursor (TiO2). The catalysts were characterized using BET, XRD and FTIR. The diffraction pattern showed strong peaks that are assigned to titanium anatase phase and weaker peaks that indicated low rutile phase. The FTIR showed broad peaks of Ti-O-Ti linkages in TiO2 particles. The photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue and phenol was performed separately in visible light and UV irradiation of different wavelengths. Adsorption was dominant in the case of methylene blue removal while photodecomposition was more pronounced in the case of phenol removal.

  • Wide Spectrum Photocatalytic Activity in Lanthanide-doped Upconversion Nanophosphors Coated with Porous TiO2 and Ag-Cu Bimetallic Nanoparticles

    摘要: Approaches towards maximum utilization of solar light spectrum for photocatalysis have currently attracted great interest. The combination of profoundly different properties, such as, upconversion, semiconducting and plasmonic properties can produce a favorable path in efficient utilization of the different regions of solar light reaching to earth. In this regard, design and fabrication of microstructures consisting of upconverting lanthanide doped nanophosphors coated with porous semiconducting material, TiO2 and decorated with plasmonic Ag-Cu bimetallic nanoparticles is presented in this work. These microstructures display great stability and exceptional photocatalytic activity by absorbing wide spectrum from ultraviolet to near infrared. The photocatalytic activity could be attributed to the synergistic effects between the different components and the efficient energy transfer between them. The development of such sort of hybrid microstructures could pave way for the development of new materials for the efficient utilization of the wide spectrum of sunlight.

  • Efficient Conversion of CO <sub/>2</sub> to Methane Photocatalyzed by Conductive Black Titania

    摘要: One of the major challenges encountered in CO2 utilization is the development of available and cost-efficient catalysts with sufficient activity, selectivity, and stability for the generation of useful methane. Here, conductive black titania, TiO2@x, is found to be efficient in photocatalyzing the reduction of CO2 to CH4. This unique material comprises a crystalline core–amorphous shell structure (TiO2@TiO2@x) with numerous surface oxygen vacancies, which facilitates the adsorption and chemical activation of CO2 molecules. Under full solar irradiation, the optimized 500-TiO2@x material with narrowed band gap and intermediate states below the conduction band tail exhibits a high space-time yield of CH4 of 14.3 mmol g@1 h@1, with 74 % selectivity and excellent photostability. The present findings can make a significant contribution, not only to develop the surface electron-modified black TiO2 catalyst to boost photocatalytic efficiency, but also to establish a really viable and convenient CH4 production process for CO2 conversion and renewable solar energy storage.

  • A spectroscopic method for quick evaluation of tint strength and tint tone of titania (rutile) pigment and factors affecting them

    摘要: Titanium dioxide (TiO2) manufacturing industries measure optical properties such as brightness, colour, tint strength, tint tone, gloss, scatter coefficient, and others to ensure the quality of the product. Product characterization and process control generally focus on the optical properties, which determine its quality. In this work, titania rutile pigment with varying tint strength and tint tone is analyzed and a correlation is established between particle size and the optical properties such as tint strength and tint tone. It is observed that optical properties of titania pigment depends on the particle size as well as particle size distribution. A relatively faster evaluation of tint strength and tint tone can be made using the reflectance and particle size measurements. Analytical samples were prepared by ultrasonic dispersion of pigment in water containing calgon as dispersing agent. To verify the accuracy of the method, pigment tint strength and tint tone obtained from this study are compared with those resulting from traditional analysis. The results showed that the new method is viable.

  • Au nanoparticles supported on nanorod-like TiO2 as catalysts in the CO-PROX reaction under dark and light irradiation: Effect of acidic and alkaline synthesis conditions

    摘要: Gold nanoparticles precipitated-deposited on titania nanostructures (1.0 wt% nominal loading) were studied in the preferential CO oxidation in excess of H2 at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, both in dark and under simulated solar light irradiation. Titania supports were synthesized by means of two hydrothermal methods markedly acid and basic, giving rise to rutile nanorods and anatase deformed nanorods structures, respectively. Characterization techniques such as N2 physisorption, XRD, XPS, DRUV-vis, HRTEM and XRF were performed in order to study the chemical, structural and optical properties of the catalysts. Well defined rutile nanorods structures were obtained from the acidic treatment allowing a regular distribution of gold nanoparticles and resulting quite active in the CO-PROX reaction. In particular the sample from the acidic synthetic approach calcined at 700 °C displayed the best results as it was highly selective to CO2 under both dark and simulated solar light irradiation.

  • A Simple Route in Fabricating Carbon-Modified Titania Films with Glucose and Their Visible-Light-Responsive Photocatalytic Activity

    摘要: Carbon-modi?ed titania (C–TiO2) ?lms were easily prepared by using an impregnation process with a glucose-containing TiO2 sol. Through controlling calcination conditions, the as-obtained C–TiO2 products exhibited highly photocatalytic activity for the degradation of gaseous NOx under visible light and ultraviolet illumination. The effects of carbon content and calcination temperature on the photocatalytic performances and their photochemical and physical properties were investigated. Carbonaceous species on the TiO2 surface enhanced the visible-light absorption of TiO2 ?lms; however, an excessive amount of carbon on the TiO2 surface reduced its photocatalytic ability due to the serious coverage effect on active sites. The results show that a suitable glucose addition is about 50–100% of the weight of TiO2 content and the optimized calcination temperature is 300 ?C, which leads to better photocatalytic activity under ultraviolet and visible- light irradiations. Accordingly, the simple-prepared C–TiO2 ?lms functioned as visible-light-responsive catalysts, allowing for a feasible producing route for real applications.

  • Oxygen Vacancy Induced Structural Distortions in Black Titania - A Unique Approach using Soft X-Ray EXAFS at the O K-Edge

    摘要: Unknown changes in the crystalline order of regular TiO2 result in the formation of black titania, which has garnered significant interest as a photocatalytic material due to the accompanying electronic changes. Herein, we determine the nature of the lattice distortion caused by an oxygen vacancy that in turn results in the formation of mid-band gap states found in previous studies of black titania. We introduce an innovative technique using a state-of-the-art silicon drift detector, which can be used in conjunction with extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) to measure bulk interatomic distances. We illustrate how the energy dispersive nature of such a detector can allow us an unimpeded signal, indefinitely in energy space, thereby sidestepping the hurdles of more conventional EXAFS, which is often impeded by other absorption edges.
