  • Surface plasmon resonance on blue GaN-based VCSEL with Al-grating

    摘要: Based on the research of surface plasmon (SP) applied to Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSEL), we proposed a new 465 nm GaN-based VCSEL to enhance illumination by deposit Al rectangular grating onto p-i-n layer. Meanwhile, an increase in the e?ective radiated power was obtained by the control of a surface plasmon mode, which depends strongly on the structural parameters such as material, period, depth and dipole location. Compared to conventional structure, we have a 30% improvement in e?ective radiated power. Such advantages make surface Al-grating be an alternative low-cost and simple technique used in SP-coupled VCSEL for the blue range.

  • Error correction for short-range optical interconnect using COTS transceivers

    摘要: Nowadays, quantities of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) optical transceivers are widely equipped in both exiting and abuilding data centers. As data centers are becoming larger and containing more servers, the method to ensure longer and steady transmission with COTS optical transceivers becomes one of the key issues. Meanwhile, variations in the manufacturing of COTS optical transceivers bring in fluctuation of packet error rate (PER) in communication. In this paper, we present an application layer adaptive forward error correction (AL-AFEC) coding scheme for COTS optical transceivers in optical interconnect to solve the problems mentioned above and test its performance in a 10 Gbps Ethernet (10GbE) link using 10GBASE-SR SFP+ modules. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme enables longer transmission distance and the instability introduced by manufactural variations is well settled. Since our scheme requires no extra hardware on optical transceivers, it is a considerable low-cost alternative to improve system reliability and achieve longer transmission distance for COTS optical transceivers.

    摘要: We proposed a new approach to design interface hardware for next-generation telecom systems of combined fiber-wireless architecture based on nonlinear behavioral modeling in widespread off-the-shelf CAD tool NI AWRDE. To validate the approach, we research in detail a prospective base station operating in EU-assigned band (3.4-3.8 GHz) of 5G networks, which has easy-to-configure layout using the same cost- and power-efficient LW-VCSEL in downlink and uplink channels and direct modulation of LW-VCSEL in period-doubling state.

  • Evaluation of Chirped Fiber Bragg Grating with APD on Designed Optical Fiber Communication Link

    摘要: Application of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) in optical communication is an evolving field. In this research paper, various types of chirped FBG’s (CFBG) have been used with avalanche photodiode (APD) on the designed optical fiber communication (OFC) link. Data rate of 20 Gbps and return-to-zero modulation format has been kept as fixed parameters. The designed link has been evaluated for varying fiber lengths (100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 km), various type of CFBG’s (linear, quadratic, square root and cubic root) with Gaussian apodization function, varying grating lengths (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 mm) and operating temperatures (5°C, 10°C, 15°C, 20°C, 25°C, 30°C). The designed OFC link has also been evaluated for APD with and without CFBG. The performance evaluation matrix parameters selected are Q-factor, bit error rate and eye diagram. The OFC link employing CFBG with APD has been found to be superior. In compensating chromatic dispersion, optimum results have been observed for linear CFBG with Gaussian apodization function in comparison to other types of CFBG with 50 mm grating length for the maximum transmission distance.

  • Optical Gain in Laser Heterostructures with an Active Area Based on an InGaAs/InGaAlAs Superlattice

    摘要: An active area based on InGaAs/InGaAlAs superlattice for laser diodes operating in the spectral range between 1535 and 1565 nm is proposed and realized practically. It is demonstrated that using a superlattice increases the mode gain at the same values of the pump-diode current density relative to a typical active-area design based on an array of InGaAs quantum wells.

  • Room-temperature continuous-wave operation of green vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers with a curved mirror fabricated on {20a??21} semi-polar GaN

    摘要: We demonstrate a room-temperature continuous-wave operation of green vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser with a 20-μm-long cavity possessing a dielectric curved mirror formed over a {20?21} semi-polar Gallium Nitride substrate. The emission wavelength and the threshold current were 515 nm and 1.8 mA, respectively. We also confirmed that white light is generated by overlaying three prime colors of light, i.e. red, blue and green, emitted only from vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers.

  • Near-infrared tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy-based determination of carbon dioxide in human exhaled breath

    摘要: A spectroscopic detection system for the accurate monitoring of carbon dioxide (CO2) in exhaled breath was realized by tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) in conjunction with a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) and a multipass cell with an effective optical path-length of 20 m. The VCSEL diode emitting light with an output power of 0.8 mW, covered the strong absorption line of CO2 at 6330.82 cm?1 by drive-current tuning. The minimum detectable concentration of 0.769% for CO2 detection was obtained, and a measurement precision of approximately 100 ppm was achieved with an integration time of 168 s. Real-time online measurements were carried out for the detection of CO2 expirograms from healthy subjects, different concentrations were obtained in dead space and alveolar gas. The exhaled CO2 increased significantly with the increasing physical activity, reaches its maximal value at the beginning of respiratory compensation and then decreased slightly until maximal exercise. The developed measurement system has a great potential to be applied in practice for the detection of pulmonary diseases associated with CO2 retention.

This paper presents the design and implementation of a precision fiber optic seismic monitoring system for highway rock slope using fiber Bragg grating geophone and vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser-based interrogator. The overall composition, sensor design and interrogation scheme are introduced in detail. The field test results show that this system has great potential for stability monitoring of highway rock slope.

  • Radiant Efficacy Enhancement for Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser Devices Using Enhanced Specular Reflection Structures

    摘要: Vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) devices operate using a variety of viewing angles to satisfy the demands of different applications. One simple and universal approach to accomplish this is by using scattering elements in the packaging process for VCSEL chips. However, inevitable backward scattering loss is introduced, which suppresses the radiant efficacy of VCSEL devices. Therefore, we have proposed an enhanced specular reflection (ESR) structure with an opening circle window (OCW) to recycle the backward scattered light. The ray-tracing method is used to optimize the diameter of the OCW, as well as the thickness of the ESR structure. Furthermore, the light extraction mechanism is discussed. According to theoretical results, VCSEL devices with optimized ESR structures are fabricated and compared with traditional VCSEL devices. The experiment results demonstrate that ESR structures can significantly enhance the radiant efficacy of VCSEL devices using scattering elements. This shows great potential for applications involving illumination and 3-D imaging.

  • Low‐Threshold Amplified Spontaneous Emission and Lasing from Thick‐Shell CdSe/CdS Core/Shell Nanoplatelets Enabled by High‐Temperature Growth

    摘要: Colloidal semiconductor nanoplatelets (NPLs) have recently emerged as highly promising optical gain medium because of their superior optical properties. Here, the shell-thickness-dependent optical gain properties of CdSe/CdS core/shell NPLs synthesized by high-temperature growth are systematically investigated for the first time. The core/shell NPLs show the increased quantum yields and enhanced photostability as well as clear reduced emission blinking, thanks to the preferable passivation of nonradiative surface defects by the growth of the high-quality CdS shells under high reaction temperature. Meanwhile, the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) performance of CdSe/CdS NPLs indicates a nonmonotonic dependence on the shell thickness. The ASE threshold is achieved as low as ≈4.4 μJ cm?2 for thick-shell NPLs with six monolayer CdS shells, and exhibiting ultrafast transient dynamics process (≈11 ps). Besides, an extremely long lifetime (>800 ps) and large bandwidth (>140 nm) of optical gain are observed by employing ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. Finally, a thick-shell NPLs vertical cavity surface-emitting laser is developed, which demonstrates spatially directional single-mode operation with an ultralow lasing threshold of ≈1.1 μJ cm?2. These excellent results are attributed to the remarkable optical gain performance of core/shell NPLs and represent an important step toward practical NPL laser devices.
