  • Ultrathin wide-angle large-area digital 3D holographic display using a non-periodic photon sieve

    摘要: Holographic displays can provide a 3D visual experience to multiple users without requiring special glasses. By precisely tailoring light fields, holographic displays could resemble realistic 3D scenes with full motion parallax and continuous depth cues. However, available holographic displays are unable to generate such scenes given practical limitations in wavefront modulation. In fact, the limited diffraction angle and small number of pixels of current wavefront modulators derive into a 3D scene with small size and narrow viewing angle. We propose a flat-panel wavefront modulator capable of displaying large dynamic holographic images with wide viewing angle. Specifically, an ultrahigh-capacity non-periodic photon sieve, which diffracts light at wide angles, is combined with an off-the-shelf liquid crystal display panel to generate holographic images. Besides wide viewing angle and large screen size, the wavefront modulator provides multi-colour projection and a small form factor, which suggests the possible implementation of holographic displays on thin devices.

  • OLED TV Provides Superior Viewability

    摘要: OLED TV Provides Superior Viewability. Advances in design and manufacturing are making OLED TVs a very appealing option. TVs have evolved to offer bigger screens, higher resolutions, slim and light designs, and overall better picture quality. LCD-TV technology in particular has achieved market dominance with outstanding picture quality and a slim footprint. However, the design of an LCD TV will always be based on the fundamental structure of a transmissive LC panel illuminated by some type of backlight system. The performance of this system, while continuing to achieve incremental improvements each year, will always be constrained because it cannot self-emit light in the same way that a phosphor or OLED panel can. OLED technology provides new solutions by overcoming the fundamental structural limitations of LCD technology. OLED TV, for which the latest generation of advanced designs was first introduced in early 2013, is based on a much simpler structure of self-emission from the pixel matrix surface and can therefore reproduce more natural colors and better picture quality than an LCD TV.

  • Study on micromoulding of a high viewing angle LED lens

    摘要: Lenses are used to mount on the light-emitting diode (LED) chip to obtain the desired light distribution patterns. In this study, a lens for large viewing angle and high uniformity LED has been developed with optical grade poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA) material. TracePro software was used to design the lens while Moldex 3D software was implemented to design the mould and the mould filling phenomena. Together with micromoulding technology and Taguchi experimental method with control parameters were mould temperature (MoT), melt temperature (MT), and injection speed, a lens with optical uniformity of 87.18% and viewing angle of 128° has been developed. The experimental results showed that MoT and MT were the main factors affecting the optical quality, each with contributions greater than 50 and 30%, respectively. Though this lens is relatively small in dimension, a draft angle is needed for successful removal of the moulded PMMA lens from the mould.

  • Suppression of viewing angle dependence of TEOLED devices with internal nano-wrinkle structure

    摘要: In order to suppress the viewing angle dependence of top emission organic emitting diodes (TEOLEDs) with strong microcavity effect, we introduced randomly distributed nano-wrinkle structure beneath highly reflective anode. By applying such nano-wrinkle pattern, viewing angle dependence and color shift could be improved compared with that without nano-structure [e.g. Δ(u’, v’): 0.077 → 0.025]. However, current efficiency reduced more than half. To compensate this problem, we additionally introduced index matching epoxy filler between encapsulation glass and TEOLED device. By this approach, current efficiency drop of device with nano-wrinkle structure could be improved. For example, the efficiency dropped by 7.7% when we filled the epoxy filler between capping layer and glass lid while, it decreased by 30.8% if we don’t use epoxy filler. We found that index matching helps to extract more light confined inside TEOLED, so device performance degradation could be minimized. In addition, when we attached a circular polarizer film to these devices, depolarization was observed in most cases, but we were able to achieve a perfect black state from the devices with nano-wrinkle structure underneath reflective anode.

  • Wide-Gamut and Polarization-Independent Structural Color at Optical Sub-diffraction-Limit Spatial Resolution Based on Uncoupled LSPPs

    摘要: The decreasing pixel size of digital image sensors for high-resolution imaging brings a great challenge for the matching color filters. Currently, the conventional dye color filters with pixel size of several microns set a fundamental limit for the imaging resolution. Here, we put forward a kind of structural color filter with circular nanohole-nanodisk hybrid nanostructure arrays at sub-diffraction-limit spatial resolution based on the uncoupled localized surface plasmon polaritons (LSPPs). Due to the uncoupled LSPPs taking effect, the pixel could generate an individual color even though operating as a single element. The pixel size for the minimum color filtering is as small as 180 × 180 nm2, translating into printing pixels at a resolution of ~ 141,000 dots per inch (dpi). In addition, through both the experimental and numerical investigations, the structural color thus generated exhibits wide color gamut, large viewing angle, and polarization independence. These results indicate that the proposed structural color can have enormous potential for diverse applications in nanoscale optical filters, microscale images for security purposes, and high-density optical data storage.

  • 16.4: Novel SFT Mode Pixel Design for High Viewing Angle of Contrast at Automotive Applications

    摘要: Customers will concern about different optical parameters in different display applications. Mobile phone displays focused on high transmittance rates, the higher transmittance rates, the lower cost and power consumption. Automotive displays focused on viewing angle of contrast, especially at horizontal direction, because the CID is at the center of driver and co-driver. Therefore, the applications of SFT mode display change from mobile phone to automotive, the pixel design changes from vertical 2-domain to horizontal 2-domain. Tianma proposes a novel SFT mode pixel design, which adopts fake horizontal 2-domain and stretches the Common ITO space to the boundary of Source line. Compared to the traditional design and high contrast ratio design, the novel the contrast ratio and pixel design can transmittance rates about 20%.

  • 28.3: Development of High Performance TFT-LCD Module for Vehicle Display

    摘要: The methods to achieve high performance vehicle displays are introduced. In order to achieve high contrast of wide viewing angle, the improvements include: a) the special function polarizer (POL), b) optical alignment process (OA), c) the optimal design of cell gap and d) a specific back light unit (BLU) film structure. Wide color gamut with high saturation is achieved by using the specially formulated light emitting diode (LED) with the specific color filter (CF). A special liquid crystal (LC) can help to come up to quick response time in wide temperature range.
