摘要: This paper addresses the needs of mobile access network and presents the benefits of integrated microwave photonics for 5th-generation (5G) mobile networks. Full convergence of the optical fiber and the wireless segments in the form of microwave photonics is described. The usage of integrated microwave photonics in optically supported wireless networks can provide a high-capacity mobile system based on the micro-wave and millimeter-wave frequency bands.

摘要: Radio over Fiber (RoF) technology can integrate advantages of both wireless networks and optical fiber networks. Recently RoF technology has found numerous applications in broadband wireless access communication networks, radio astronomy, RADAR and millimeter-wave communications, antenna array beam-forming, establishment of up- and down-converting links using photonic signals, spectroscopy, imaging, and electronic warfare.

摘要: This paper presents a comprehensive survey on the importance of free space optics (FSO) systems used as last mile for communication systems and their integration with optical fibers. Optical fiber is already being used in the backbone networks due to its high speed and high bandwidth qualities but the last mile has always been a problem. Last mile is the last physical connection between access network and the end user. FSO systems provide an innovative solution to this problem. The surveyed integration techniques are explained with their working principles. All the nodes used to make this integration possible are also thoroughly explained. The advantages and disadvantages of FSO systems are also listed and discussed. The paper also discusses current challenges and directions for future research.
