  • Tunable passively Q-switched ytterbium-doped fiber laser using MoWS2/rGO nanocomposite saturable absorber

    摘要: We demonstrated a tunable Q-switched ytterbium-doped fiber laser (YDFL) using MoWS2/rGO nanocomposite as passive saturable absorber. Further, the Mo1?xWxS2/rGO nanosheets, with x proportion of 0.2, are synthesized using hydrothermal exfoliation technique. The proposed nanocomposite-PVA based thin film is fabricated by mixing the MoWS2/rGO nanosheets with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The fabricated thin film is sandwiched between two fiber ferrules to realize the proposed saturable absorber (SA). Further, the proposed MoWS2/rGO-PVA based thin film SA exhibits a fast relaxation time and a high damage threshold which are suitable to realize a Q-switched pulsed laser with a tunable wavelength range of 10 nm that extends from 1028 nm to 1038 nm. For the highest pump power of 267.4 mW, the generated Q-switched pulses exhibit a narrow pulse width of 1.22 μs, the pulse repetition rate of 90.4 kHz, the highest pulse energy of 2.13 nJ and its corresponding average power of 0.193 mW. To the best of author’s knowledge, this is the first realization of a tunable Q-switching fiber laser in a 1 μm wavelength using MoWS2/rGO nanocomposite saturable absorber.

  • Switchable dual-wavelength fiber laser based on a phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating combined with Mach-Zehnder interferometer and Sagnac loop

    摘要: A switchable dual-wavelength erbium-doped fiber laser is proposed and demonstrated. It is based on the finer filter effect of phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating (PSFBG), combining with the compound interference filtering effect of Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) and Sagnac loop. By adjusting the polarization controller (PC) and tuning the delay, the switchable single- and dual-wavelength fiber laser with tunable wavelength spacing can be obtained. As a result, the dual-wavelength spacing as small as 0.04 nm is achieved, the output wavelength is from 1555.580 nm to 1559.928 nm, and the side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) is larger than 40 dB. The maximum wavelength drift of single-wavelength is less than 0.033 nm, and the maximum fluctuation of dual-wavelength is less than 0.02 nm. The experimental results show that the proposed fiber laser has important applications, such as in high fineness dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems and other similar fields.

  • High-Resolution Temperature Sensor Based on Single-Frequency Ring Fiber Laser via Optical Heterodyne Spectroscopy Technology

    摘要: We demonstrate a high-resolution temperature sensor based on optical heterodyne spectroscopy technology by virtue of the narrow linewidth characteristic of a single-frequency fiber laser. When the single-frequency ring fiber laser has a Lorentzian-linewidth <1 kHz and the temperature sensor operates in the range of 3?85 ?C, an average sensitivity of 14.74 pm/?C is obtained by an optical spectrum analyzer. Furthermore, a resolution as high as ~5 × 10?3 ?C is demonstrated through optical heterodyne spectroscopy technology by an electrical spectrum analyzer in the range of 18.26–18.71 ?C with the figure of merit up to 3.1 × 105 in the experiment.

  • A single-longitudinal-mode narrow-linewidth dual-wavelength fiber laser using a microfiber knot resonator

    摘要: A stable narrow-linewidth dual-wavelength single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) erbium-doped fiber laser is demonstrated using a microfiber knot resonator (MKR). A MKR made by the microfiber knotting method exhibits the characteristics of flexibility, high quality factor and broad free spectral range and can be used as a comb-like ultra-narrow band pass filter. SLM operation of the fiber laser can be generated as a function of the Vernier effect by cascading a 650 μm diameter MKR in the ring cavity. In combination with a common fiber Bragg grating, narrow linewidths (0.016 nm and 0.019 nm) of dual wavelength are generated. Finally, a SLM ring laser with narrow linewidth and low-frequency noise is achieved. Simultaneous generation of first- and second-order optical vortex beams in the dual-wavelength fiber laser using different mode-selective couplers is demonstrated.

  • Lorentzian demodulation algorithm for multimode polymer optical fiber Bragg gratings

    摘要: For strain sensing applications, we develop a simple and accurate Lorentzian demodulation algorithm for fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) inscribed in multimode optical fibers. As multimode FBG spectra generally exhibit multiple peaks, simply tracking some particular spectral peaks (i.e., maximum detection) results in measurement failure when the strain is large. Here, using an FBG inscribed in a perfluorinated graded-index multimode polymer optical fiber, we experimentally evaluate the new method by comparing its performance with those of other demodulation algorithms, such as the maximum and centroid detection methods. Finally, using this method, we demonstrate the accurate measurement of strain of up to 1.0%.

  • Measuring effective electro-optic coefficient at 1040?nm by spectral intensity modulation with THz time-domain spectroscopy

    摘要: We report a single method for measuring the e?ective electro-optics (EO) coe?cient only by spectral intensity modulation with a terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) device. Compared with conventional methods, the measuring device based on THz-TDS by probing the spectral intensity modulation is simple, rapid, and highly sensitive. It does not require special preparation process, electrode contact or applying high voltage on the sensor samples. The EO coe?cients of four kinds of materials, namely, ZnTe and GaP crystals, DAST wafer and GaSe ?lm, are measured at 1040 nm. The results showed good agreement with literature data by the conventional methods.

  • Self-starting mode-locked Tm-doped fiber laser using a hybrid structure of no core - graded index multimode fiber as the saturable absorber

    摘要: We experimentally demonstrated a passively mode-locked all-fiber Tm laser using a no-core-graded-index multimode fiber structure as a saturable absorber based on the nonlinear multimode interference. Stable fundamentally mode-locking operation was obtained at a pump threshold of 180 mW. The output soliton pulses had a centre wavelength, spectral width, pulse duration, and repetition rate of 1895.7 nm, 3.3 nm, 1.25 ps, and 18.91 MHz, respectively. This is a simple, low-cost, stable, and convenient laser oscillator, with many potential applications in eye-safe ultrafast photonics.

  • Rectangular Pulse Generation from a Mode Locked Raman Fiber Laser

    摘要: Rectangular and step-like pulses are generated in a mode locked Raman fiber laser with a nonlinear optical loop mirror. The Raman laser has a typical figure-8 configuration. Stable rectangular pulses with a fundamental repetition rate of 733 kHz are obtained. As the increasing of the pump power, the Raman pulse evolves to a step-like rectangular pulse. The maximum pulse energy is 64.1 nJ with a pulse width of 25.1 ns. After spectrally resolved measurements, the step-like pulse is proved to be induced by the dual wavelength oscillation. It is the first report of rectangular pulsed output in mode-locked Raman fiber laser to the best of our knowledge.

  • Alternated Q-switched and gain-switched dual-pulse Yb fiber laser with Tm-Ho co-doped fiber as saturable absorber

    摘要: We demonstrate a dual-wavelength and dual-pulse Yb-doped fiber laser with a Tm-Ho co-doped fiber as saturable absorber (SA). The wavelength of the first pulse in the dual-pulsing output is at 1064 nm generated via SA-induced self Q-switching and the second pulse is at 2127.7 nm and generated by gain-switching with the laser at 1064 nm as the pump for the Tm ions in the Tm-Ho co-doped fiber and thus induced stimulated emission. With the increases of the pump power, the pulse duration of the two pulses is decreased depending on the level of the pump. The pulse duration of the laser at 1064 nm decreases from 1.4 μs to 296 ns when the pump power increases from 275 mW to 475 mW, while the pulse duration at 2127.7 nm is reduced from 440 ns to 246 ns when the pump increases from 300 mW to 475 mW. Accordingly, the repetition rate is decreased from 17.4 kHz to 6.8 kHz. The experimental result shows that Tm-Ho co-doped fiber is an excellent candidate for SA-induced Q-switching at 1064 nm.

  • Multiplexed ultrafast fiber laser emitting multi-state solitons

    摘要: Ultrafast fiber lasers have been serving as an ideal playground for spreading the extensive industrial applications and exploring the optics nonlinear dynamics. Here, we report a bidirectional fiber laser scheme for validating the possibility of a multiplexed laser system, which is passively mode-locked by the nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) technique. In particular, the proposed fiber laser consists of one main cavity and two counter-propagating branches with different dispersion distributions. Thus, different formation mechanisms are introduced into the lasing oscillator. Consequently, stable conventional solitons (CSs) and dissipative solitons (DSs) are respectively formed in the clockwise (CW) and counterclockwise (CCW) directions of the same lasing oscillator. Moreover, attributing to the strong birefringence filtering effect, the wavelength selection mechanism is induced. Through the proper management of intra-cavity birefringence, wideband wavelength tuning and switchable multi-wavelength operations are experimentally observed. The central wavelength of CS can be continuously tuned from 1560 nm to 1602 nm. Additionally, the evolution process of different multi-wavelength operations is also elucidated. Benefiting from this multiplexed laser scheme, bidirectional lasing oscillation, multi-state soliton emission, wavelength tuning and multi-wavelength operations are synchronously realized in a single laser cavity. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time for such a multiplexed fiber laser has been reported. The results provide information for multifunctional ultrafast fiber laser system, which is potentially set for telecommunications, fiber sensing and optics signal processing, etc.
