  • Passively Q-Switched All-Fiber Yb-Doped Lasers Based on Nonlinear Multimode Interference?

    摘要: We report a passively Q-switched all-?ber Yb-doped laser using the structure of step-index multimode ?ber and graded-index ?ber (SIMF-GIMF) as a new saturable absorber (SA) based on the nonlinear multimode interference (NL-MMI). Through bending the SA to a certain state, we obtain a stable Q-switched laser operation with the shortest pulse duration of 4.37 μs and a corresponding repetition rate of 147.6 kHz with center at 1,039 nm. The maximum average output power and single pulse energy are recorded to be 2.409 mW and 16.3 nJ, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this paper con?rms experimentally for the ?rst time Q-switched laser operation based on SIMF-GIMF SA in all-?ber lasers. In addition, we also observed unstable Q-switched mode-locking operation. All-?ber lasers based on SIMF-GIMF SA are attractive for practical applications and undergo no damage and performance degradation with time.

  • Observation of evolution dynamics from bound states to single-pulse states in a passively mode-locked fiber laser

    摘要: We report what is, to our knowledge, the first experimental observation of the ultrafast evolution dynamics from bound states (BSs) to single-pulse states (SPSs) by using the dispersive Fourier-transform (DFT) technique. The evolutions from three categories of initial BSs to SPSs are spectrally resolved in real time. Usually, accompanied by complex soliton–soliton interaction and competition, one of the two bound pulses weakens to disappearance, and the other one evolves into SPS. During the transition, the two bound pulses ordinarily depart away from each other with complex changes of relative phase. However, it is found that not all the evolutions are accompanied by the increase of temporal separation between two bound pulses. The obtained results would facilitate a deep understanding of complex dynamics in nonlinear systems and provide valuable data for further theoretical studies.

  • High-power single-longitudinal-mode double-tapered gain-coupled distributed feedback semiconductor lasers based on periodic anodes defined by i-line lithography

    摘要: In this paper, we demonstrate a regrowth-free double-tapered gain-coupled distributed feedback semiconductor laser. It is designed based on periodic surface current injection to reach a high-power and single-longitudinal mode. A continuous-wave output power of over 1.2 W/facet is achieved at 4 A. High single-longitudinal-mode output power reaches up to 0.9 W/facet at 3 A at each uncoated facet. The side mode suppression ratio is nearly 30 dB at 980 nm. The 3 dB spectral width is less than 2.7 pm. The lateral far field divergence angle is only 14.5 °, the beam quality factor M2 is 1.7, achieving a near-diffraction-limit emission. Our device, produced by standard i-line lithography, enhances the output power while obtaining the pleasurable spectral and spatial properties. It has great potential in widespread commercial applications such as high efficiency pumping sources for its low-cost, easy fabrication technique and excellent performance.

  • Tunable Ytterbium-Doped Mode-locked Fiber Laser Based on Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

    摘要: A tunable mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser with a tuning range of 55 nm is demonstrated. Currently, this is the widest tuning range for all-normal dispersion (ANDi) ytterbium-doped mode-locked fiber laser based on new-material saturable absorber (SA). The combined effects of the single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) saturable absorber and a reflective grating significantly improved laser performance: broad tuning range, superb stability and repeatability. The experimental results indicate that SWCNTs can be a brilliant saturable absorber in all-normal dispersion regime at 1 μm, with pulse width of 2.4 ps and optical spectral bandwidth of 1.6 nm across the full tuning range. The laser also shows that the optical spectrum can be tuned accurately and continuously, which gives possibility for various applications such as optical communications, spectroscopy, time-resolved measurement, etc.

  • Optical Fiber Cladding SPR Sensor Based on Core-Shift Welding Technology

    摘要: The typical structure of an optical fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor, which has been widely investigated, is to produce the SPR phenomenon by the transmission of light in a fiber core. The traditional method is to peel off the fiber cladding by complex methods such as corrosion, polishing, and grinding. In this paper, the transmitted light of a single-mode fiber is injected into three kinds of fiber cladding by core-shift welding technology to obtain the evanescent field directly between the cladding and the air interface and to build the Kretschmann structure by plating with a 50-nm gold film. The SPR sensing phenomenon is realized in three kinds of fiber cladding of a single-mode fiber, a graded-index multimode fiber, and a step-index multimode fiber. For the step-index multimode fiber cladding SPR sensor, all the light field energy is coupled to the cladding, leading to no light field in the fiber core, the deepest resonance valley, and the narrowest full width at half maximum. The single-mode fiber cladding SPR sensor has the highest sensitivity, and the mean sensitivity of the probe reaches 2538 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) after parameter optimization.

  • Optical fiber magnetic field sensor based on birefringence in liquid core optical waveguide

    摘要: An optical fiber magnetic field sensor based on the birefringence of magnetic fluid is proposed by filling the magnetic fluid into a hollow-core waveguide. The birefringence characteristics of magnetic fluids with different concentrations tuned by magnetic field were investigated under different magnetic fields when the filled hollow-core waveguide is placed in a Sagnac loop. As the magnetic field increases, the internal chain-like structure of the magnetic fluid increases, resulting in changes in birefringence. The experimental results show that the device has a highly linear response to the variation of magnetic field intensity in the range of 0–300 Oe with the maximum sensitivity of 29.2 pm/Oe and resolution of 0.68 Oe. The proposed magnetic field sensor has such advantages as ease of fabrication, simple structure, low cost and it is expected to find potential applications in the magnetic field measurement with high accuracy, optical fiber gyroscopes, magneto-optic modulators and so on. Due to the external field tunability, the device also provides a promising technology for microfluidics research.

  • Optical Nonlinearity of ZrS2 and Applications in Fiber Laser

    摘要: Group VIB transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have been successfully demonstrated as saturable absorbers (SAs) for pulsed fiber lasers. For the group comprising IVB TMDs, applications in this field remain unexplored. In this work, ZrS2-based SA is prepared by depositing a ZrS2 nanostructured film onto the side surface of a D-shaped fiber. The nonlinear optical properties of the prepared SA are investigated, which had a modulation depth of 3.3% and a saturable intensity of 13.26 MW/cm2. In a pump power range of 144–479 mW, the Er-doped fiber (EDF) laser with ZrS2 can operate in the dual-wavelength Q-switching state. The pulse duration declined from 10.0 μs down to 2.3 μs. The single pulse energy reached 53.0 nJ. The usage of ZrS2 as a SA for pulse generation in fiber lasers is presented for the first time. Compared to the experimental results of dual-wavelength Q-switched fiber lasers with two-dimensional (2D) materials, our laser performance was better. Our work indicates that the group comprising IVB TMD ZrS2 has bright prospects for nonlinear optical applications.

  • Optical Fiber Sensor Performance Evaluation in Soft Polyimide Film with Different Thickness Ratios

    摘要: To meet the application requirements of curvature measurement for soft biomedical robotics and flexible morphing wings of aircraft, the optical fiber Bragg grating (FBG) shape sensor for soft robots and flexible morphing wing was implemented. This optical FBG is embedded in polyimide film and then fixed in the body of a soft robot and morphing wing. However, a lack of analysis on the embedded depth of FBG sensors in polyimide film and its sensitivity greatly limits their application potential. Herein, the relationship between the embedded depth of the FBG sensor in polyimide film and its sensitivity and stability are investigated. The sensing principle and structural design of the FBG sensor embedded in polyimide film are introduced; the bending curvatures of the FBG sensor and its wavelength shift in polyimide film are studied; and the relationship between the sensitivity, stability, and embedded depth of these sensors are verified experimentally. The results showed that wavelength shift and curvature have a linear relationship. With the sensor’s curvature ranging from 0 m?1 to 30 m?1, their maximum sensitivity is 50.65 pm/m?1, and their minimum sensitivity is 1.96 pm/m?1. The designed FBG sensor embedded in polyimide films shows good consistency in repeated experiments for soft actuator and morphing wing measurement; the FBG sensing method therefore has potential for real applications in shape monitoring in the fields of soft robotics and the flexible morphing wings of aircraft.

  • An optical angle sensor based on chromatic dispersion with a mode-locked laser source

    摘要: This paper proposes a new optical angle sensor, in which a mode-locked laser is employed as the light source, and chromatic dispersion of a collimator objective is utilized to detect the angular displacement of a target of interest. In the proposed method, each of the optical modes in the femtosecond laser beam reflected from the reflector mounted on a target of interest is separated from the others by chromatic dispersion of a collimator objective to generate a group of focused laser beams that can be utilized as the scale for measurement of an angular displacement of the target. By detecting the change in peak frequency in optical spectra obtained by the photodetector, a small angular displacement can be measured. In this paper, as the first step of research, a prototype optical setup is developed, and some basic experiments are carried out to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method for measurement of angular displacement.

  • Graphene Heterostructure Integrated Optical Fiber Bragg Grating for Light Motion Tracking and Ultrabroadband Photodetection from 400 nm to 10.768 μm

    摘要: Integrated photonics and optoelectronics devices based on graphene and related 2D materials are at the core of the future industrial revolution, facilitating compact and flexible nanophotonic devices. Tracking and detecting the motion of broadband light in millimeter to nanometer scale is an unfold science which has not been fully explored. In this work, tracking and detecting the motion of light (millimeter precision) is first demonstrated by integrating graphene with an optical fiber Bragg grating device (graphene-FBG). When the incident light moves toward and away from the graphene-FBG device, the Bragg wavelength red-shifts and blue-shifts, indicating its light motion tracking ability. Such light tracking capability can be further extended to an ultrabroad wavelength range as all-optical photodetectors show the robust response from 400 nm to 10.768 μm with a linear optical response. Interestingly, it is found that graphene-Bi2Te3 heterostructure on FBG shows 87% higher photoresponse than graphene-FBG at both visible and telecom wavelengths, due to stronger phonon-electron coupling and photo-thermal conversion in the heterostructure. The device also shows superior stability even after 100 d. This work may open up amazing integrated nanophotonics applications such as astrophysics, optical communication, optical computing, optical logic gating, spectroscopy, and laser biology.
