  • Physical Origin of Early Failure for Contaminated Optics

    摘要: Laser-Induced optical breakdown often occurs unexpectedly at optical intensities far lower than those predicted by ultra-short pulse laser experiments, and is usually attributed to contamination. To determine the physical mechanism, optical coatings were contaminated with carbon and steel microparticles and stressed using a 17 kW continuous-wave laser. Breakdown occurred at intensity levels many orders of magnitude lower than expected in clean, pristine materials. Damage thresholds were found to strongly follow the bandgap energy of the film. A thermal model incorporating the particle absorption, interface heat transfer, and free carrier absorption was developed, and it explains the observed data, indicating that surface contamination heated by the laser thermally generates free carriers in the films. The observed bandgap dependence is in direct contrast to the behavior observed for clean samples under continuous wave and long-pulse illumination, and, unexpectedly, has similarities to ultra-short pulse breakdown for clean samples, albeit with a substantially different physical mechanism.

  • Influence of Al-Si coating on microstructure and mechanical properties of fiber laser welded 22MnB5 steel

    摘要: Fiber laser welding of as-received 22MnB5 steel with Al-10wt.%Si coating in butt configuration was performed. The influence of Al-Si coating on microstructure transformation and mechanical properties including tensile tests, fatigue tests and Erichsen cupping tests was investigated. Ferrite with Al enrichment (1.37 wt%) was found in the fusion zone (FZ) of coated welded joints with 15% area proportion, while nearly entire martensite structure composed the FZ in the case of de-coated joint. The strain localization was more likely to accumulate at the martensite/martensite interface rather than the ferrite/martensite interface due to the higher kernel average misorientation (KAM) values. Microhardness of the FZ in coated welded joints dropped by 50HV compared with that of de-coated welded joints. However, tensile properties were not affected since failure occurred at base metal (BM). Fatigue samples of coated welded joints showed better performance than the de-coated ones, suggesting that the ferrite in the FZ had positive effect on fatigue lives under cycling load conditions. The Erichsen cupping tests showed similar Erichsen values (5.60 mm and 5.67 mm) for de-coated and coated welded joints. An opposite effect of ferrite on Erichsen cupping tests was obtained. The peak force required for deformation dropped by 35% with Al-10wt.%Si coating.

  • Optimization of Residual Stresses in Laser-Mixed WC(Co, Ni) Coatings

    摘要: A ternary mixture of tungsten carbide (WC), cobalt (Co), and nickel (Ni) powders is prepared to form ceramic-metal composite coatings employed for laser cladding of 40Cr steel. This coating is investigated using the mixture design to evaluate the influence of its ratios on the residual stresses in the clads. The WC/Co/Ni ternary mixture exhibits higher residual stresses than those of the Co/Ni or WC/Ni binary mixtures, except for the WC/Co one. Single WC, Co, or Ni designs illustrate a high sensitivity of residual stresses, cracks pass through the interior of WC particles rather than around them, and the cracks mostly propagate along the eutectic phases at 50%Co–50%WC. A reduced special quartic model in the mixture design exhibits excellent fit, predicted and experimental values of residual stresses for these laser clads are in good agreement.

  • Interface characterization and mechanical properties of dual beam laser welding-brazing Al/steel dissimilar metals

    摘要: The DP590 steel to AA7075 Al-alloy with lap configuration is successfully joined by dual beam laser welding-brazing without using filler metal. Through the introduction of the derived laser beam, the wetting angle, wetting distance and the thickness of intermetallic compound (IMC) layer are well improved and controlled. It is found that the wettability of liquid Al on steel improves with the increase of laser power, i.e. the wetting angle decreasing from 25.3° to 17.8° and the wetting distance increasing from 2.17 mm to 3.19 mm as the laser power increasing from 1.0 kW to 1.6 kW. Two kinds of IMC exist at brazing interface, one is η-phase (Fe2Al5) with flatten morphology closing to the steel side and the other is θ-phase (FeAl3) with needle-like morphology adjacent to the welding-brazing seam. The thickness of IMC layer increases from 8.37 μm to 12.12 μm with increasing laser power from 1.0 kW to 1.6 kW. Tensile test shows that both the wettability and the IMC thickness have influence on the welding-brazing joint strength. Poor wettability and too thick IMC layer will result in lower strength and fracture occurred in brazing interface. The optimal joint tensile strength of 123.7 MPa on average is achieved with the laser power of 1.4 kW.

  • HSS coating with keyholes in penetration produced by laser cladding process

    摘要: This paper is devoted to the assurance of higher durability of hard coatings by using irregular method of laser cladding (LC). The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that by producing of keyhole mode LC coatings enables to create functionally graded structure in interface. This can contribute to decrease the gradient of trough-depth residual stresses of the coating-substrate system formed by dissimilar steels. Experimental work was carried out using precise LC system, which consists of industrial robot (KUKA) and 1kW Yb-fiber laser (IPG Laser). Experimental coatings were created on cold work tool steel substrate AISI D2 using high-speed steel (HSS) powder AISI M2. The properties of coatings produced by two different methods have been evaluated in the course of a comparative analysis by examination of morphology of transverse cross-sections, elemental composition, microhardness distribution inside coatings and tribological tests. Results showed that coating with keyhole mode in penetration had lower hardness due to a larger amount of dilution however the smooth transition of properties in the interface was obtained. Despite the significant difference in hardness both coatings demonstrated very similar tribological behaviour.

  • Passively Q-switched fiber laser tunable by Sagnac interferometer operation

    摘要: In this paper, a stable passively Q-switched Erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) tunable by Sagnac interferometer operation was described by using a graphene oxide saturable absorber (SA) as a Q-switcher. The wavelength operation of the Q-switched EDFL was tunable from 1566.3 nm to 1559.3 nm by increasing the temperature of sagnac loop mirror (SLM) from 30 °C to 70 °C in the figure-of-eight laser configuration. At 1566.3 nm operation, by increasing the pump from the threshold power of 77.3 mW to 126.5 mW, the repetition rate can be increased from 30.7 kHz to 41.5 kHz while the pulse width was narrowed from 10.2 to 7.3 μs. The Q-switching threshold pump power increased with the increase of the temperature, which then shifted the operation to a shorter wavelength. However, the laser efficiency increased at a shorter wavelength operation. At 1561.4 nm operation, the maximum pulse energy of 20.5 nJ was obtained at 161.0 mW pump power.

  • Polarization-controlled and single-transverse-mode vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers with eye-shaped oxide aperture

    摘要: We presented a single-transverse-mode and single-polarization vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) with an eye-shaped oxide aperture, obtained by enhanced anisotropic oxidation of oxide layer. For apertures with dimensions of 2 ' 4.6 and 3 ' 6 μm2, the orthogonal polarization suppression ratio (OPSR) of the VCSEL was 22 and 19 dB, respectively. A single-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of more than 25 dB at an output power of 0.5 mW was also achieved for the VCSEL with aperture dimension of 2 ' 4.6 μm2. We believe that the proposed method to realize the mode and polarization control of VCSELs has great potential in future applications. ? 2018 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

  • Dissipative soliton resonance in a passively mode-locked praseodymium fiber laser

    摘要: Dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) operation in a passively mode-locked praseodymium-doped fluoride fiber laser with a nonlinear optical loop mirror is proposed and demonstrated. A praseodymium-doped fluoride fiber is employed as the gain medium to allow lasing in the 1.3 μm region, and a stable square pulse emission at 1303 nm is observed. The width of the square pulse broadens with the increment of pump power, from 83 ns to 239 ns, whereas the peak power remains at a comparable level. The highest single pulse energy is recorded at around 2.3 nJ without the appearance of pulse breaking, validating the predicted DSR operation. To the best of author’s knowledge, this work is the first study of DSR operation in the 1.3 μm region.

  • Graphene-Incorporated Soft Capacitor for Mechanically-Adjustable Electro-Optic Modulators

    摘要: In addition to ultra-high capacity and speed in data management, future communication networks require enhanced performance via system reconfigurability under limited resources. Extremely high-speed operation renders optical data managing devices as excellent candidates to hybridize with current electronic devices; however, they still need tunability for system reconfiguration in an integrated scheme. We demonstrate an efficient electro-optic (EO) modulator that is mechanically tunable on a multiple optical waveguide system functioned with a soft capacitor structure incorporating graphene and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). The flexible capacitor that generates optical signals by temporal light absorption depending on electrical signals can be mechanically detached and re-attached from and onto a rigid surface of the waveguide. It provides either the on or off state of the modulating operation, and enables switching of the working waveguides following the reconfigured data routes. Quality-controlled graphene mainly provides the EO operation, and PMMA plays an important role as both the flexible dielectric layer in the capacitor and the passivation layer for graphene protection. The modulation effects of the manually prepared graphene-PMMA capacitor mechanically adjusted onto a side-polished optical fiber (D-shaped fiber) are investigated in terms of the extinction ratio (ER) of the transmitting light and the operational bandwidth. We successfully display an ER of the modulator up to 19.8 dB with a voltage control ranging from -50 V to 50 V. Its stable operation is verified with a modulation speed up to 2.5 MHz.

  • High Power 1.5 μm Broad Area Laser Diodes Wavelength Stabilized by Surface Gratings

    摘要: Wavelength stabilization against temperature variation of high-power broad area 1.5-μm InGaAsP/InP laser diodes is demonstrated by employing surface gratings. The development targets application in eye-safe automotive LIDAR systems, which would bene?t from deploying narrowband receiver ?lters to block ambient solar radiation for improved signal-to-noise ratio. The surface grating is monolithically integrated on the laser chip using nanoimprint lithography. The peak power of the lasers exceeded 6 W in pulsed mode, for an FWHM spectral width of 0.3 nm and a peak wavelength drift of only 0.1 nm/°C. The wavelength shift with temperature is reduced by ?ve times compared to broad area high-power Fabry–Perot laser diodes typically employed in LIDAR systems.
