Ultrathin wide-angle large-area digital 3D holographic display using a non-periodic photon sieve
摘要: Holographic displays can provide a 3D visual experience to multiple users without requiring special glasses. By precisely tailoring light fields, holographic displays could resemble realistic 3D scenes with full motion parallax and continuous depth cues. However, available holographic displays are unable to generate such scenes given practical limitations in wavefront modulation. In fact, the limited diffraction angle and small number of pixels of current wavefront modulators derive into a 3D scene with small size and narrow viewing angle. We propose a flat-panel wavefront modulator capable of displaying large dynamic holographic images with wide viewing angle. Specifically, an ultrahigh-capacity non-periodic photon sieve, which diffracts light at wide angles, is combined with an off-the-shelf liquid crystal display panel to generate holographic images. Besides wide viewing angle and large screen size, the wavefront modulator provides multi-colour projection and a small form factor, which suggests the possible implementation of holographic displays on thin devices.

Subjective and objective evaluation of visual fatigue caused by continuous and discontinuous use of HMDs
摘要: During continuous use of displays, a short rest can relax users' eyes and relieve visual fatigue. As one of the most important devices of virtual reality, head‐mounted displays (HMDs) can create an immersive 3D virtual world. When users have a short rest during the using of HMDs, they will experience a transition from virtual world to real world. In order to investigate how this change affects users' eye condition, we designed a 2 × 2 experiment to explore the effects of short rest during continuous using of HMDs and compared the results with those of 2D displays. The Visual Fatigue Scale, critical flicker frequency, visual acuity, pupillary diameter, and accommodation response of 80 participants were measured to assess the subject's performance. The experimental results indicated that a short rest during the using of 2D displays could significantly reduce users' visual fatigue. However, the experimental results of using HMDs showed that short rest during continuous using of HMD induced more severe symptoms of subjectively visual discomfort, but reduced the objectively visual fatigue.

Narrow-Band Green-Emitting Sr <sub/>2</sub> MgAl <sub/>22</sub> O <sub/>36</sub> :Mn <sup>2+</sup> Phosphors with Superior Thermal Stability and Wide Color Gamut for Backlighting Display Applications
摘要: The narrow-band emitting phosphors have been extensively investigated in recent years, with the expectation that a wide color gamut of phosphor-converted backlighting device could be fabricated. Due to the weak electric–phonon interaction and low structural relaxation caused by the high rigid crystal structure and symmetric coordination environment, Sr2MgAl22O36:Mn2+ (SMAO:Mn2+) shows a narrow full-width at half-maximum of 26 nm, a high color purity of 81.5%, and a low thermal quenching (82% at 473 K of the initial intensity at 298 K). Using K2SiF6:Mn4+ as the red phosphor, SMAO:Mn2+ as the green one, and GaN-based chip as the blue component, the white light-emitting diode exhibits a National Television Standard Committee value of 127%. All the results demonstrate that the SMAO:Mn2+ phosphor has a promising application in the field of advanced wide-color-gamut backlight display, and the establishment of the relationships between the narrow-band emission and crystal structure can also be applied to design other novel narrow-band phosphors for backlighting technologies.

Functional requirements of automotive head-up displays: A systematic review of literature from 1994 to present
摘要: Despite the long history of automotive head-up displays (HUDs), what information they should display in different situations to best serve the driver remains unanswered. The lack of understanding hinders designing useful automotive HUD systems. In an effort to address this, the current study investigated the developer, researcher and user perspectives on the functional requirements of automotive HUDs through literature review. The review results indicated that: 1) the existing commercial HUDs perform largely the same functions as the conventional in-vehicle displays, 2) past research studies proposed various HUD functions for improving driver situation awareness and driving safety, 3) autonomous driving and other new technologies are giving rise to new HUD information, and 4) little research is currently available on HUD users’ perceived information needs. Based on the review results, this study provides insights into the functional requirements of automotive HUDs and also suggests some future research directions for automotive HUD design.

摘要: Foveated imaging is of great interest for Augmented and Virtual Reality applications. The resolution losses off-axis simulated in foveated imaging are modelled using cone density on the retina. This article reviews the other factors limiting the resolution off-axis in AR/VR, in particular the impact of the eye lens. Several off-axis resolution simulations are proposed and compared in order to provide some theoretical compression ratios for 4K and 8K display systems. A model taking into account both the cone density across the retina and the optical performance of the eye lens is proposed and evaluated. The variability and challenges of modelling the human eye resolution losses are also discussed, in particular in the case of age-dependence.

Towards multifocal displays with dense focal stacks
摘要: We present a virtual reality display that is capable of generating a dense collection of depth/focal planes. This is achieved by driving a focus-tunable lens to sweep a range of focal lengths at a high frequency and, subsequently, tracking the focal length precisely at microsecond time resolutions using an optical module. Precise tracking of the focal length, coupled with a high-speed display, enables our lab prototype to generate 1600 focal planes per second. This enables a novel first-of-its-kind virtual reality multifocal display that is capable of resolving the vergence-accommodation conflict endemic to today’s displays.

The fiftieth anniversary of the liquid crystal display
摘要: A record is given of the special meeting organised by the UK&I Chapter of the Society of Information Display held at the Royal Academy of Engineering in London, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the RCA announcement of the first Liquid Crystal Display on 28th May 1968. Coming exactly eighty years after the report of the first liquid crystal materials, this announcement sparked interest across the globe, and particularly in the UK, Switzerland and Japan. Presentations of the early LCD history from Hilsum, Schadt and Raynes give insights into both the science and also the process of invention itself. These early contributors are followed by a view from the USA from Bos and representation from the companies Sharp and Merck that helped shape the success of these fascinating and useful materials. Also reviewed are talks on the use of organic semiconductors to drive plastic LCD by Sirringhaus, reflective LCD of Folium Optics, retail signage of Displaydata, as well as a look to the future from LCD competitors from Bodle (Phase Change Material displays) and BOE (OLED).

Robust 3D object reconstruction based on camera clustering with geodesic distance
摘要: This Letter presents a method that reconstructs 3D object using camera clustering and key camera selection to resolve scalability problem. To perform camera clustering, camera similarity is defined using geodesic distance and overlap constraint between cameras. Key cameras are then selected to reconstruct an object considering overlapping cameras and high curvature regions. As a result, it is achievable to relax increases in the execution time and the accumulated errors due to the scalability problems with a large number of cameras.

摘要: This paper proposes a novel method for casting virtual shadows on real surfaces on an optical see-through head-mounted display without any extra physical filter devices. Instead, the method presents shadows as results of brightness induction. To produce brightness induction, we place a texture of the real scene with a certain transparency around the shadow area to amplify the luminance of the surrounding area. To make this amplification unnoticeable, the transparency of the surrounding region is gradually increased as the distance from the shadow region. In the experiment with 23 participants, we confirmed that users tend to perceive the shadow region is darker than a non-shadow area under the conditions where a circular virtual shadow is placed on a flat surface.
