The proposed flat-panel wavefront modulator, combining a non-periodic photon sieve with a commercial LCD panel, successfully generates large-size, wide-viewing-angle dynamic 3D holographic images. It achieves a viewing angle of ~30° and a screen size of 3.68 cm × 2.76 cm, with a contrast factor of ~200,000. The system maintains a small form factor and enables multi-color projection without color filters, suggesting potential for thin holographic displays.

Low light transmittance through the photon sieve (0.16% for 2.2 μm pinholes), requiring high-power lasers. Incomplete non-periodicity due to limited fill factor of LCD panels may generate cloned images. The effective viewing angle decreases with increasing distance from the screen. Background noise and computational burden increase with the number of pinholes.
1:Experimental Design and Method Selection:
The system uses a transmissive LCD panel combined with a non-periodic photon sieve to modulate wavefronts. The photon sieve consists of randomly oriented pinholes that diffract light at wide angles, increasing the viewing angle of holographic images. A one-to-one correspondence between LCD pixels and pinholes allows independent modulation of light fields.
2:Sample Selection and Data Sources:
The photon sieve was fabricated using conventional photolithography and electron-beam writing processes. Holographic images (e.g., helix, tetrahedron, rotating cube) were generated and captured using laser illumination at various wavelengths.
3:List of Experimental Equipment and Materials:
LCD panel (LCX017AL, Sony), lasers (green: 532 nm, red: 639 nm, blue: 473 nm), photon sieve fabricated on fused silica substrate with Ti thin film, CCD camera (Lt365R, Lumenera), objective lenses (UPlan FLN 40×, UPLSAPO 4×, Olympus), tube lens (f=100 mm), dichroic mirrors (DMLP505, DMLP550, Thorlabs), movable stage for imaging.
4:Experimental Procedures and Operational Workflow:
The LCD panel and photon sieve were aligned and placed in contact. Laser beams illuminated the panel, and optimal phase patterns were displayed to generate foci at desired positions. Images were captured using a 4-f telescopic imaging system mounted on a movable stage to observe motion parallax and different viewing angles. Aberration correction was applied using Zernike polynomials.
5:Data Analysis Methods:
Phase values for focusing were calculated algebraically based on optical path lengths. Contrast factor was measured as the ratio of holographic image intensity to background noise. Viewing angles and focus sizes were analyzed using FWHM measurements and spatial frequency maps.
