  • Helical Long-Period Gratings Inscribed in Polarization-Maintaining Fibers by CO2-Laser

    摘要: We demonstrate fabrication of helical long-period gratings (HLPGs) in a polarization-maintaining fiber using CO2-laser. The maximum polarization dependent loss (PDL) of the grating was measured to be more than 30 dB at the resonance wavelength. The HLPG was found to have a high index sensitivity of -7248.6 nm/RIU when the surrounding refractive index changes in the range of 1.4470-1.4600, temperature sensitivity of 158.8 pm/°C, and strain sensitivity of 3.17 pm/με. The twist sensitivities based on intensity variation were measured to be 5.98 dB/ (rad/m) (co-directional twist) and -5.97 dB/ (rad/m) (contra-directional twist), respectively. The demonstrated grating devices have promising applications as high-sensitivity fiber sensors, PDL compensator etc.

  • All-fiber polarization interference filter based uniform multiwavelength erbium-doped fiber laser

    摘要: We demonstrate a compact and stable room-temperature multiwavelength erbium doped fiber laser by employing 45° tilted fiber gratings based on an all-fiber polarization interference filter. Benefiting from the filter, the channel number, linewidth, uniformity and stabilization of the multiwavelength laser are greatly improved. The filter also works as a functional polarizing device in a nonlinear polarization rotation, leading to the multiwavelength operation. Instead of a highly nonlinear fiber, the single mode fiber is used to provide enough linearity and to reduce the splice loss. More than 80 wavelengths (within a 3 dB bandwidth), lasing with a linewidth of 0.03 nm and a signal-to-noise ratio of 33 dB, are obtained. The wavelength spacing of 0.164 nm agrees with the channel spacing of the filter, and can be flexibly controlled by adjusting the length of the filter.

  • Arc-Induced Long Period Gratings in Erbium-Doped Fiber

    摘要: In this paper, we report about the fabrication of long period gratings (LPGs) directly into an Erbium-doped fiber, by using the electric arc discharge technique. The attention is focused on the writing process and the resulting properties, by considering gratings with different periods and measuring their spectra over a wide wavelength range. The LPGs show high order attenuation bands with tunable resonance wavelengths and depths up to 30 dB, while the lengths of the final devices are in range 20–45 mm. The polarization-dependent loss of these LPGs is also measured, for the first time in this kind of fiber. As further novelty, the influence of surrounding refractive index, applied strain, and temperature is investigated and discussed in comparative manner. Based on the achieved results, this fabrication procedure can be adapted to a specific application, for example in optical communications, signal processing, and sensing fields.

  • Ultrasensitive LPFG corrosion sensor with Fe-C coating electroplated on a Gr/AgNW film

    摘要: This paper presents the first report on an ultrasensitive Fe-C coated long period fiber gratings (LPFG) corrosion sensor with graphene (Gr) and silver nanowire (AgNW) composite as a conductive film for Fe-C electroplating. The Gr/AgNW composite was grown on copper foil, wet transferred and adhered to the curve surface of the fiber optic sensor under atmospheric pressure and heating conditions. For comparison, another Fe-C coated LPFG sensor was prepared with silver nano ink as a conductive film. Both sensors were tested for 72 h in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution with simultaneous measurements of transmission spectrum and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Due to its high optical transparency, the Gr/AgNW composite increased the wavelength sensitivity and service life of a Fe-C coated LPFG sensor by over 90% and 110%, respectively. The effective depth of influence to the evanescent field surrounding the LPFG sensor was 23.6 μm with the silver film and greater than 30 μm with the Gr/AgNW film.

  • Ocean Salinity Sensing Using Long-Period Fiber Gratings Functionalized with Layer-by-Layer Hydrogels

    摘要: Rapid, accurate, and real-time measurements of ocean salinity are of great importance for a host of scientific, commercial, and defense applications. We demonstrate a highly sensitive, fast-responding fiber-optic salinity sensor that integrates long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) with ionic strength-responsive hydrogel. The submicron-thick hydrogel was synthesized via layer-by-layer electrostatic assembly of partially quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) (qP4VP) and poly(acrylic acid), followed by chemical cross-linking. Spectroscopic ellipsometry measurement of a hydrogel made of 37% quaternized qP4VP showed robust and reversible swelling/deswelling in solutions with salt concentrations ranging from 0.4 to 0.8 M (22.8?44.7 g/kg) around pH 8.1. The swelling/deswelling process induced large changes in the refractive index of the hydrogel, leading to resultant shift in the resonance wavelength (RW) of LPFGs. The salinity-dependent optical response of the hydrogel-coated LPFGs is in good agreement with ellipsometry measurement. LPFGs coated with the hydrogel exhibited a sensitivity of 7 nm RW shift/M (125.5 pm/‰) with a measurement time less than 5 s. The shift in the resonance wavelength correlated linearly with salt concentration, making quantification of measured salinity straightforward.

    摘要: A large dynamic range interferometric strain sensor based on a specifically designed interferometer is proposed, in which a section of polarization maintain (PM) fiber and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) are cascaded and spliced into one arm as the sensing head. In the strain sensing test, we simultaneously achieve a high resolution of 0.22 micro-strain as well as a large measurement range of 750 micro-strains.
