  • Observation of Optical Properties of Gold Thin Films Using Spectroscopic Ellipsometry

    摘要: In this research work, an attempt has been made to synthesize nano-structured gold thin films over Silicon dioxide (SiO2) coated on Silicon(Si) Substrate using three deposition techniques namely DC Sputtering, Pulsed DC Sputtering, and Pulsed Laser Deposition(PLD). Optical measurements using spectroscopic ellipsometry showed that the dielectric constants of the films differed between films synthesized by different synthesis routes. This was expected because different synthesis routes yielded different microstructure. The difference in microstructures results in differences in electronic structure and therefore resulting in the differences on the optical response.

  • Launching low-energy surface plasmons in purple gold (AuAl2)

    摘要: We confirm that the unusual purple color of the intermetallic compound AuAl2 is of a plasmonic origin by launching surface plasmons (SPs) in thin AuAl2 films. We measure the SP dispersion relation and also use the films to measure the index of refraction of sucrose solutions using standard SP resonance sensing. We find that the SP energy in planar AuAl2 is approximately 2.1 eV, about 0.4 eV lower than in gold, and the material is highly resistant to oxidation. This is close to what is expected from previously reported measurements of the dielectric function of AuAl2. On this basis, we predict that AuAl2 nanoparticles will a have very strong, spectrally nearly uniform light absorbance about an order of magnitude greater than standard carbon black. Such particles may therefore find applications as obscurants or as an alternative to more complex light-absorbing gold structures in areas such as photothermal therapy or solar steam generation, or in plasmonic catalysis.

  • Anomalous Hall-like transverse magnetoresistance in Au thin films on Y <sub/>3</sub> Fe <sub/>5</sub> O <sub/>12</sub>

    摘要: Anomalous Hall-like signals in platinum in contact with magnetic insulators are common observations that could be explained by either proximity magnetization or spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR). In this work, longitudinal and transverse magnetoresistances are measured in a pure gold thin film on the ferrimagnetic insulator Y3Fe5O12 (Yttrium Iron Garnet, YIG). We show that both the longitudinal and transverse magnetoresistances have quantitatively consistent scaling in YIG/Au and in a YIG/Pt reference system when applying the SMR framework. No contribution of an anomalous Hall effect due to the magnetic proximity effect is evident.
