  • Tailoring Properties of Microcavity In-line Mach-Zehnder Interferometer by the Microcavity Enlargement using Femtosecond Laser

    摘要: This work presents a theoretical analysis and experimental verification of fine-tuning of the spectral response and refractive index (RI) sensitivity of microcavity in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer (μIMZI). The μIMZIs were fabricated using femtosecond (fs) laser micromachining in standard single-mode fibers as circular cavities with a diameter of 60 μm. Next, the structures underwent fs laser post-processing, which included fabrication of an additional cavity with the same diameter but shifted by 15 μm or 30 μm against the center of the initial microcavity. Different depths of the additional structures were investigated. The enlargement of the microcavity allows for tailoring the spectral response, i.e., it shifts the interference pattern by more than 200 nm, with no introduction of any additional losses and distortions in the spectrum. As the additional effect, regardless of the size of the extension, the sensitivity of the enlarged μIMZI was improved by 32%.

  • Absolute distance measurement based on spectral interferometry using femtosecond optical frequency comb

    摘要: We demonstrated an absolute distance measurement method based on the frequency folding e?ect using the spectral interferometry of femtosecond optical frequency comb. And the investigation was carried out on the ranging accuracy in?uence of the phase noise in the traditional complicated phase unwrapping method via band-pass ?lter and Fourier Transform. To reduce the e?ects of the phase noise, we proposed the non-?ltered and di?erential envelop phase demodulation method, and its robustness was illustrated with a standard deviation of 75 nm for the stability of single point measurements. Further, through the extension of the non-ambiguity range, we achieved a resolution of better than 30 ??m in a long distance measurements range of 70 m, yielding a relative precision of 3.1 × 10 ? 7.

  • An Optical MEMS Acoustic Sensor Based on Grating Interferometer

    摘要: Acoustic detection is of great signi?cance because of its wide applications. This paper reports a Micro-Electro-Mechanical System (MEMS) acoustic sensor based on grating interferometer. In the MEMS structure, a diaphragm and a micro-grating made up the interference cavity. A short-cavity structure was designed and fabricated to reduce the impact of temperature on the cavity length in order to improve its stability against environment temperature variations. Besides this, through holes were designed in the substrate of the grating to reduce the air damping of the short-cavity structure. A silicon diaphragm with a 16.919 μm deep cavity and 2.4 μm period grating were fabricated by an improved MEMS process. The fabricated sensor chip was packaged on a conditioning circuit with a laser diode and a photodetector for acoustic detection. The output voltage signal in response to an acoustic wave is of high quality. The sensitivity of the acoustic sensor is up to ?15.14 dB re 1 V/Pa @ 1 kHz. The output signal of the high-stability acoustic sensor almost unchanged as the environment temperature ranged from 5 ?C to 55 ?C.

  • Skin friction measurements on structured surfaces using Clauser-chart method and Oil film interferometry

    摘要: Measurements of skin friction have been performed on flat and hexagonal concave surfaces using the conventional Clauser-chart method and the Oil film interferometry. The values of shear stress coefficients measured by the conventional Clauser-chart method on a flat plate were found to be up to 13 % higher from the ones deduced by the Oil film interferometry. The velocity profiles required for the Clauser-chart were obtained by using hot wire anemometry. The analysis of the results suggested that the conventional Clauser-chart method cannot be used to predict shear stresses acting on the hexagonal concave surfaces due to the existence of strong pressure gradients. Oil film interferometry not only provides accurate and direct values of shear stress coefficients but also helps to visualize the flow above the surface.

  • On investigations of refractive indices and birefringence of fiber using duplicate and non-duplicate micro-interferograms of double refracting interferometer

    摘要: The formula of refractive index of fiber considering the refraction has been reviewed. This formula is used to investigate the effect of refraction on the accuracy of refractive index calculations with different simulated micro-interferograms of duplicate interference fringes with different fringe shifts order. Also a more accurate formula to calculate the birefringence from the non-duplicate interference fringes has been derived and tested to calculate the birefringence of simulated and experiment micro-interferogram. The presented micro-interferograms were automatically analyzed and the contour lines of the bright fringes were determined using Fourier transform technique. A prepared software program takes the contour line of the fringes and automatically calculate the refractive index, the radius, and the birefringence of fiber. A good result was obtained in case of using immersion liquid matches between the parallel and perpendicular refractive indices of fiber.

  • Interferometric investigation of the opto-mechanical and structural properties of iPP/TiO <sub/>2</sub> nanocomposite fibers

    摘要: Fibers that missing specific features and functionalities could be innovated and functionalised via nano additives, in particular metal oxides. Titanium oxide (TiO2) nanoparticles have been added to isotactic polypropylene (iPP) to form iPP/TiO2 nanocomposite fibers. Three samples of iPP/TiO2 fibers were extruded at three extrusion speeds 25, 50, and 78 m/min were considered in this study. Mach–Zehnder interferometer was used to assess the changes in the opto-mechanical and geometrical parameters of iPP/TiO2 nanocomposite fibers along the fiber axis. The mechanical drawing device along with Mach–Zehnder interferometer was utilized to stretch the filaments to different draw ratios. The effect of mechanical cold drawing and extrusion speed on the optical and physical characteristics of iPP/TiO2 nanocomposite fibers were determined along the fiber axis. The optical and physical variation along the nanocomposite samples were characterized by measuring their refractive indices, birefringence, refractive index profile along the fiber axis. The diffraction of He–Ne laser beam was used to define the variation of the fiber diameter along the fiber axis through their cross-sectional area and shape. A sample of uniform diameter from neat iPP fibers was used as reference material for studying the variation of the iPP/TiO2 fiber diameter along the fiber axis. As result, the iPP/TiO2 nanocomposite fibers exhibited nonuniform diameters. The dispersion of TiO2 particles in nanocomposite fibers influences the properties' consistency along and across the fiber.

  • Gravity acceleration measurement based on Atom interferometry

    摘要: Cold atom interferometer based on two-photon stimulated Raman transition has been proved to be a promising way to measure g with higher precision. In this work, we first introduce the principle of atomic interference gravimetry, including the interaction between the atoms and light, the interferometry with the Raman beams and the measure of the g. Then our gravity acceleration measurement system will be introduced, including atomic fountain, Raman system and detection system. With this device, we can get the value of the g, with the uncertainty in the order of ten minus seven.

  • Coherent detection of ultraweak electromagnetic fields

    摘要: We explore the application of heterodyne interferometry for a weak-field coherent detection scheme. The methods detailed here will be used in ALPS II, an experiment designed to search for weakly interacting, sub-eV particles. For ALPS II to reach its design sensitivity this detection system must be capable of accurately measuring fields with equivalent amplitudes on the order of 10?5 photons=s or greater. We present initial results of an equivalent dark count rate on the order of 10?5 photons=s as well as successful generation and detection of a signal with a field strength equivalent to 10?2 photons=s.

  • Pre-treatment for preventing degradation of measurement accuracy from speckle noise in speckle interferometry

    摘要: Speckle interferometers, which can measure three-dimensional deformations with the same sensitivity in each direction of a three-dimensional axis, have been employed in the industry. However, the measurement results of a complex shape deformation using this method do not always produce a smooth phase map due to the influence of speckle noise. In this paper, this problem that occurs with speckle noise, which is included in the speckle pattern, is discussed. In addition, the solution to the problem concerning speckle noise is discussed. An idea for noise reduction is proposed by using a simple speckle pattern intensity distribution model based on the interferometry. It is confirmed that the proposed method can reduce the influence of speckle noise to 1/1000 of the light source wavelength.

The integration of amplitude and interferometric coherence is one of the novel methods for flood monitoring in urban area. However, its accuracy has not been evaluated especially in case of L-band SAR data. Here, we used the 2015 September flood in Joso city, Ibaraki prefecture, Japan for the evaluation of the latest L-band SAR satellite ALOS-2 PALSAR-2.
