摘要: Liquid crystals (LCs) are organic materials characterized by a certain degree of ordering and anisotropy in their fluido-dynamic, elastic and electromagnetic properties. LCs possess strong optical nonlinearity. Due to these unique properties, LCs are promising candidates for the development of novel integrated devices for telecommunications and sensing. Nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) are mostly used and studied. However, smectic A liquid crystals (SALCs) have a higher degree of long range order, lower scattering losses in SALC, and they can be useful in nonlinear optical applications. We theoretically studied the nonlinear optical phenomena in a Silicon-SALC waveguide. We have shown that the strong stimulated light scattering (SLS) caused by SALC nonlinearity can occur in the Silicon-SALC waveguide.

Fast-Tunable Terahertz Metamaterial Absorber Based on Polymer Network Liquid Crystal
摘要: This paper introduces a tunable metamaterial absorber (MA) based on polymer network liquid crystal (PNLC) in the terahertz (THz) frequency band. Under the optimal polymerization condition, through electrical control of the orientation of the PNLC embedded in the frequency selective surface, the resonant frequency of the absorber can be tuned from 416.5 to 405.0 GHz, corresponding to fractional frequency bandwidth of 2.8%. The experimental results show that the proposed MA based on the PNLC offers an adjustment time of 10 ms and recovery time of 85 ms, which is significantly faster than the tunable metamaterial devices based on conventional nematic liquid crystal (LC).

Leaching of indium from end-of-life LCD panels via catalysis by synergistic microbial communities
摘要: Currently, a large amount of discarded liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are being produced, and the improper treatment of discarded LCDs causes serious environmental pollution problems. Indium is the most valuable metal in LCDs and is present in such devices at a concentration of over 0.025%. In this study, the bioleaching of indium from end-of-life LCD panels was comprehensively investigated through three methods: S-mediated pathway, Fe-mediated pathway and Mixed pathway of S- and Fe-mediated, which yielded maximum bioleaching efficiencies of approximately 100%, 0% and 78%, respectively. Microbial community analysis showed that the dominant functional bacteria under the S-mediated pathway were Acidithiobacillus. The Acidithiobacillus genus catalysed the leaching of indium, which was mainly achieved by indirect bioleaching. In addition, the microorganisms can secrete enzymes and extracellular polymeric substances, which also contributed to the leaching of indium. Therefore, this work provides an economical and efficient biological method for future research and practical applications in indium recovery from solid waste.

Liquid crystal-based aptasensor for the detection of interferon-γ and its application in the diagnosis of tuberculosis using human blood
摘要: We report the development of a liquid crystal (LC)-based aptasensor for the detection of interferon-γ (IFN-γ) in human blood as well as the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB). In this system, the binding of IFN-γ to an aptamer immobilized on a surface disrupts the orientation of LCs, inducing a transition from a homeotropic orientation to a random one. This change in the orientation of the LCs can easily be converted and observed as a shift from a dark optical LC image to a bright one under a polarized light microscope. Through this sensing mechanism, IFN-γ levels as low as 1 pM (17 pg/ml) could be detected. This LC-based aptasensor was employed for the diagnosis of TB using blood samples from patients with latent TB. With this LC-based approach, not only could IFN-γ readily be detected, but also latent TB could be diagnosed using human blood simply and effectively without any intricate processes or instrumentation. Therefore, our present research provides a promising IFN-γ sensor with applications in clinical diagnosis of various infectious diseases, and in immunological research.

Temperature Dependence of the Luminescence Spectra of a 5CB Liquid Crystal and its Phase Transitions
摘要: The spectroluminescence properties of 4cyano4'pentylbiphenyl CH3(CH2)4(C6H4)2CN (5CB) were studied in the temperature range 4.2–297 K. A red shift of the fluorescence spectrum was noted with increasing temperature. The long-wavelength shifts in these spectra were also analyzed. Comparison of the temperature dependence curves for the emission at the band maxima λmax and their halfwidths Δλ/2 in the fluorescence spectra and the results of a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) study showed that phase transitions occur in the 5CB liquid crystals at ~230 and ~260 K.

Characterization of Side Chain Liquid Crystal Polymers Type on Blending Polymer of Cholesteryl Acrylate with Methyl Phenyl Benzoyl Acrylate
摘要: Blending cholesteryl acrylate with methyl phenyl benzoyl acrylate was made by casting solution. Photopolymerization of blending product has been done by varying the UV radiation time were 60, 90, 120 and 150 min using UV curing technique. Curing process doing at temperature range of 55-60 °C. Molecular weight (Mw) of polymers was determined using gel permeation chromatography (GPC) showed the first peak at Mw 2243 and the second peak at Mw 1160 and the result of index polydisperity was 1.02-1.03. Polymer of liquid crystal acrylate from this study was characterisized by XRD, SEM-EDX and FTIR. The XRD pattern peaks appear at 60, 90 and 120 min. SEM image shows the crosslink bonds are formed. EDX graph shows the polymer mixture containing carbon and oxygen. The FTIR spectrum raises wavenumber 1612.56 cm-1 indicates that the C=C bonds contained in the polymer structure. Based on the result of characterization of polymer liquid crystal acrylate with XRD, SEM-EDX and FTIR shown that best product was from radiation time polymerization at 90 min.

Optical concentrator from a hyperbolic liquid-crystal metamaterial
摘要: We examine the optical properties of two different configurations of a cylindrical device made from a hyperbolic metamaterial with optical axis defined by circular and radial director fields. The hyperbolic metamaterial is a uniaxial anisotropic medium for which the ratio between ordinary and extraordinary permittivities is negative, leading to a particular effective geometry with two timelike coordinates in the metric (Kleinian signature). By using differential geometry tools we are able to perform a comparison between a simple geometrical optics treatment and the wave formalism that shows the concentration of light along the cylinder axis for the case of the circular field configuration, whatever the injection conditions are.

Three in one: Mesogenic aromatic acid as a liquid crystal matrix, a chiral dopant in liquid crystals and a stabilizer for nanoparticles
摘要: Studies of thermodynamics of the N*-I phase transitions and optical properties of the new liquid crystal - (R)-2-[4”-(trans-4-butylcyclohexyl)-2’-chloro-p-terphenyl-4-oxy) propanoic acid are carried out. The aim of these studies is to analyse the capabilities of that liquid crystal to simultaneously serve as a matrix for inorganic semiconductor nanoparticles (NP) as well as a chiral dopant for liquid crystals and a chiral ligand stabilizing the surface of CdSe NPs. The chiral doping of a nematic liquid crystal was proven by the measurements of selective transmittance of the visible light. The embedding of NPs in a nematic liquid crystal leads to the increase in TN*I, which is explained by the shape anisotropy of the NPs. The anisotropy of the ligand shell may result from the interaction between the ligand and LC matrix inducing the change of the spherical shape of the shell toward the ellipsoidal one. TN*I of the liquid crystal matrix of (R)-2-[4”-(trans-4-butylcyclohexyl)-2’-chloro-p-terphenyl-4-oxy) propanoic acid (R-MPA) decreases with the embedding of NPs stabilized by the same ligands, which is in a good agreement with prior experimental results and theory, but there exists a considerable quantitative difference.

Micro-patterned cell orientation of cyanobacterial liquid-crystalline hydrogels
摘要: Control of cell extension direction is crucial for the regeneration of tissues, which are generally composed of oriented molecules. The scaffolds of highly-oriented liquid crystalline polymer chains were fabricated by casting cyanobacterial mega-saccharides, sacran, on parallel-aligned micrometer bars of polystyrene (PS). Polarized microscopy revealed that the orientation was in transverse direction to the longitudinal axes of the PS bars. Swelling behavior of the micro-patterned hydrogels was dependent on the distance between the PS bars. The mechanical properties of these scaffolds were dependent on the structural orientation; additionally, the Young’s moduli in the transverse direction were higher than those in the parallel direction to the major axes of the PS bars. Further, fibroblast L929 cells were cultivated on the oriented scaffolds to be aligned along the orientation axis. L929 cells cultured on these scaffolds exhibited uniaxial elongation.
