  • Optical Fiber Sensors Based on Microstructured Optical Fibers to Detect Gases and Volatile Organic Compoundsa??A Review

    摘要: Since the first publications related to microstructured optical fibers (MOFs), the development of optical fiber sensors (OFS) based on them has attracted the interest of many research groups because of the market niches that can take advantage of their specific features. Due to their unique structure based on a certain distribution of air holes, MOFs are especially useful for sensing applications: on one hand, the increased coupling of guided modes into the cladding or the holes enhances significantly the interaction with sensing films deposited there; on the other hand, MOF air holes enhance the direct interaction between the light and the analytes that get into in these cavities. Consequently, the sensitivity when detecting liquids, gasses or volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is significantly improved. This paper is focused on the reported sensors that have been developed with MOFs which are applied to detection of gases and VOCs, highlighting the advantages that this type of fiber offers.

  • Mid-infrared supercontinuum generation with high spectral flatness in dispersion flattened tellurite all-solid hybrid microstructured optical fibers

    摘要: Tellurite all-solid hybrid microstructured optical fibers are proposed for chromatic dispersion control. An ultra-flattened chromatic dispersion profile with variation as small as ± 0.2 ps/km/nm over the wavelength range from 2.5 to 3.7 μm can be obtained. The fibers with flattened chromatic dispersion profiles have high potential for broadband mid-infrared supercontinuum generation. Fabrication of the fiber is successfully performed and by pumping the fabricated fiber at 2 μm, a broad and highly coherent supercontinuum with high spectral flatness is generated.

  • Theoretical analysis for exploring the optical performance of solid-core polymer based microstructured optical fibers

    摘要: Polymer based microstructured optical fibers (MPOFs) like their silica counterparts guides the light through the use of array of wavelength-scale microstructures in the cross-section, and offers pivotal dominance over both polymer optical fibers (POFs) as well as air/silica microstructured optical fibers (MOFs). We aspire to investigate the optical characteristics of the solid-core MOFs based on polymer material by using an efficient theoretical model. Theoretical evidences to demonstrate that fiber support only single mode are explored and cut-off conditions are identified. We evaluate the effective index of higher-order mode (HOM) for the solid-core MPOF at terahertz (THz) regime, and the coupling properties of long-period gratings (LPGs) in MPOF are also examined. Further, the sensitivity coefficient is studied for realizing the efficient coupling in the evanescent field based applications. Theoretical results are compared with those as reported in the literature. Relative errors are also included.

  • Simultaneous determination of proteins in microstructured optical fibers supported by chemometric tools

    摘要: A new perspective on the relevant problem—creating simple, rapid, and efficient protein sensors based on microstructured optical fibers using a simple homogeneous analysis format—was proposed. Commercially available long-period grating hollow core microstructured optical fibers (LPG HCMOF) were used to determine bovine serum albumin (BSA) and albumin from chicken eggs (OVA) in binary mixtures as well as immunoglobulin G (IgG) in the presence of BSA and OVA. LPG HCMOF transmission spectra allowed the detection of both BSA and OVA up to 10 mg/mL with LOD as low as 0.1 and 0.8 μg/mL, respectively. Partial least squares regression (PLS) was utilized for modeling of LPG HCMOF spectral data and quantitative analysis of BSA, OVA, total protein, and IgG in binary and ternary mixtures. Rather high coefficients of determination (R2) and low root mean square error for the calibration (RMSEC) (15%) and prediction (RMSEP) (20%) were obtained for all PLS models. The proposed approach was tested in the analysis of BSA in spiked horse blood hemolyzed (HBH). The results demonstrated the functionality of the proposed approach and offered the opportunity for the creation of a wide range of sensors for protein determination in complex mixtures.

    摘要: Polarization modulation instability (PMI) is a form of modulation instability that can exist in weakly birefringent optical fibers. Sidebands can be generated by this effect when a polarization mode of the birefringent fiber is excited with an intense optical pump. The polarization state of the sidebands is orthogonal to the polarization of the pump signal. PMI has been observed in microstructured optical fibers (MOFs). PMI was reported in a large-air-filling fraction MOF that was pumped in the normal dispersion regime with visible light. The coherent degradation of femtosecond supercontinuum light generated in all-normal dispersion (ANDi) MOFs due to PMI was recently investigated. Here, we report the experimental observation of PMI effect in ANDi MOFs with picosecond pumping at 1064 nm.
