  • Real-time characterization of spectral instabilities in a mode-locked fibre laser exhibiting soliton-similariton dynamics

    摘要: the study of dissipative solitons in mode-locked lasers reveals a rich landscape of interaction dynamics resulting from the interplay of nonlinearity, dispersion and dissipation. Here, we characterize a range of instabilities in a dissipative soliton fibre laser in a regime where both conventional soliton and similariton propagation play significant roles in the intracavity pulse shaping. Specifically, we use the Dispersive fourier transform technique to perform real-time spectral measurements of buildup dynamics from noise to the generation of stable single pulses, phase evolution dynamics of bound state “similariton molecules”, and several examples of intermittent instability and explosion dynamics. These results show that the instabilities previously seen in other classes of passively mode-locked fibre lasers are also observed in the presence of strong nonlinear attraction of similariton evolution in an optical fibre amplifier.

  • Switchable Generation of Multipulse Patterns of Noise-Like Pulse and Dissipative Soliton Resonance in a Fiber Laser

    摘要: We report on the switchable generation of versatile patterns of multiple noise-like pulse (NLP) and dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) pulses in a dual-pump figure-eight mode-locked fiber laser. Benefiting from the change of saturation power influenced by pump power intercoupling, harmonic DSR pulses, dual-pulse DSR, dual-pulse and tri-pulse NLP are formed depending on different pump power combinations and intra-cavity polarization states. We find that the NLP pulse profile can turn from h-shape to triangular-shape after splitting. The dual-wavelength spectrum of the pulse, consisting of an obvious stokes line, can tune its center from 1075 to 1097 nm. This type of fiber laser may be helpful for further in-depth study on the underlying dynamics of multiple NLP and DSR pulses.

  • High energy noise-like pulse generation from a mode-locked thulium-doped fiber laser at 1.7-μm

    摘要: Thulium-doped fiber laser (TDFL) is a versatile platform that can be engineered to produce laser sources with desired performance that target a vast number of applications, however its operation in the 1.7-μm region is still underdeveloped owing to the quasi-three-level nature of TDF emission. In this paper, we report a high energy noise-like pulse generation from a nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) mode-locked TDFL. By using highly efficient core-pumping at 1650 nm and intra-cavity filtering component, stable mode-locking operation at 1750 nm is realized at a pump threshold of 1.5 W. With increasing the pump power to 5 W, the pulse width is stretched from 0.8 ns to 3.7 ns, while the monitored output power is linearly increased from 50 mW to 251 mW, corresponding to a maximum pulse energy of 321 nJ at the pulse repetition rate of 782 kHz. The long-term and shot-to-shot stability of the output are characterized to be 0.11 dB and 2.8% respectively. Noise-like pulse operation of the laser is confirmed by measuring the autocorrelation trace, which demonstrates a coherent peak on top of a wide pedestal. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of high energy noise-like pulse generation from a TDFL at 1.7-μm band, enabling potential applications in for example spectroscopic analysis and material processing.

  • Splitting and Motions of Dissipative Soliton Resonance Pulses in Mode-Locked Fiber Lasers

    摘要: We numerically investigated the splitting and motions of dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) pulses in an all-normal-dispersion Yb-doped ?ber laser mode-locked by a non-linear optical loop mirror. At certain values of the system parameters, the initial single Gaussian pulse can evolve into an unstable DSR pulse with several dark solitons inside. After collisions of dark solitons, a big intensity dip occurs at the center of the DSR pulse, leading to the splitting of the DSR pulse. After splitting, the peak-to-peak separation between two DSR pulses increases at ?rst and ?nally reaches a ?xed value of 193 ps, indicating a steady-state multipulse operation The relative motions of separated DSR pulse originate from the phase shift.

  • Soliton Molecules in Self-Mode-Locked Ring-Cavity Er/Yb Double-Clad Fiber Laser

    摘要: In this paper, generation of soliton molecules by a self-mode-locked Er/Yb double clad fiber laser is experimentally demonstrated. The optical spectrum of the bound solitons exhibits eight well defined peaks at ~1563 nm with high modulation depth. The corresponding autocorrelation measurement shows a fundamental trace with several narrow peaks, suggesting the presence of bound solitons. The obtained results demonstrate the reliability of our simple laser configuration for the formation of more robust soliton molecules as the pump power is increased. The soliton molecules exhibit repetition rate of 19.54 MHz and average power of 1.2 W, achieved with a pump power of ~4.8 W.

    摘要: Mode-locked (ML) lasers emitting in the spectral range of ~2 μm are based on Thulium (Tm3+) or Holmium (Ho3+) ions. The former one typically emits slightly below 2 μm where the atmosphere water vapour absorption can constrain the emission bandwidth of a ML laser. A disordered host material can provide inhomogeneous broadening of the emission spectra beyond 2 μm: recently, a Tm3+-doped disordered CNGG-type garnet generated 78 fs pulses at 2017 nm [1]. Another route is the use of Tm3+,Ho3+ codoped materials for further spectral broadening. Here, we report on the growth, structure, spectroscopic characterization, and free-running and wavelength-tunable laser operation of a Tm,Ho:CNGG disordered garnet crystal with high potential for sub-100 fs ML lasers. The crystal was grown by the Czochralski method, doped with 2.64 at.% Tm and 0.55 at.% Ho as determined by ICP-MS. The crystal structure was studied by XRD, Fig. 1(a), and Raman spectroscopy. The crystal showed a broadband emission at ~2 μm and the “effective” gain cross-section spectra were smooth and broad, Fig. 1(b). The maximum σSE for Ho3+ is 0.47×10-20 cm2 at 2080 nm. The parameters of the Tm3+→Ho3+ energy-transfer (ET) were determined as P28 (Tm → Ho) = 5.92 and P71 (Ho→Tm) = 0.68 [10-23 cm3/μs] (κET = P71/P28 = 0.115). CW (free-running) laser operation was achieved under diode-pumping at 802 nm, Fig. 2(a,b). The Tm,Ho:CNGG laser with a compact plano-plano cavity generated a maximum output power of 413 mW at 2088.3 nm with a slope efficiency η of 15.9% (vs. the absorbed pump power) and the laser threshold was at 0.36 W (for a 1.5% transmission output coupler). By placing a 6.0 mm-thick AR-coated Tm,Ho:CNGG crystal in an X-shaped cavity with Ti:Sapphire laser pumping, Fig. 2(c), wavelength-tuning of the laser emission was studied with a Lyot filter. For a 0.5% transmission output coupler, the laser wavelength was continuously tuned from 1932.5 to 2142.1 nm (a tuning range of 209.6 nm). These results indicate the suitability of Tm,Ho:CNGG disordered garnet for sub-100 fs ML and broadly tunable lasers at ~2 μm.

Mode-locking conditions have been investigated for devices with different cavity lengths, with maximum frequency of 15.21 GHz.

  • Envelope, group and phase velocities in a nested frequency comb

    摘要: Fabry–Pérot etalons have been traditionally used in a laser cavity to tune the optical frequency. In this work we present the generation of interwoven frequency combs with insertion of an intracavity Fabry–Pérot in a mode-locked laser. A high frequency comb is generated by insertion of an uncoated (low ?nesse) Fabry–Pérot inside the laser cavity. The intracavity Fabry–Pérot acquires a high ?nesse from the laser cavity and the velocity of the pulses in the Fabry–Pérot is affected by the laser cavity length, gain and losses, with the dielectric group velocity dk/dΩ playing only a minor role. The output characteristics are explained by the condition that the radiation is simultaneously resonant with the etalon and the laser cavity.
