A Review on the Development of Infrared Nonlinear Optical Materials with Triangular Anionic Groups
摘要: Exploration of new nonlinear optical (NLO) materials in the infrared (IR) region is of importance in many civil and military fields. Fundamental building units (FBUs) play the critical roles in the origin of NLO effect for chalcogenide system, such as tetrahedral and triangular anionic groups. Note that some triangular groups can generate the relatively strong NLO effect owing to their distinctive π-conjugated electron orbitals or other unique structures. This review focuses on the metal sulfides with triangular anionic groups and has systematically studied the relationship between structure and performances. Compared to the known materials, the common choice for different MS3 (M = B, Sb, As, Ag, Cu, Te, Sn) units are introduced in detail. This review also summarizes the mechanism of MS3 to provide useful insights into the development of NLO materials with better performances.

Adjoint method and inverse design for nonlinear nanophotonic devices
摘要: The development of inverse design, where computational optimization techniques are used to design devices based on certain specifications, has led to the discovery of many compact, non-intuitive structures with superior performance. Among various methods, large-scale, gradient-based optimization techniques have been one of the most important ways to design a structure containing a vast number of degrees of freedom. These techniques are made possible by the adjoint method, in which the gradient of an objective function with respect to all design degrees of freedom can be computed using only two full-field simulations. However, this approach has so far mostly been applied to linear photonic devices. Here, we present an extension of this method to modeling nonlinear devices in the frequency domain, with the nonlinear response directly included in the gradient computation. As illustrations, we use the method to devise compact photonic switches in a Kerr nonlinear material, in which low-power and high-power pulses are routed in different directions. Our technique may lead to the development of novel compact nonlinear photonic devices.

The third-order nonlinear optical properties of gold nanoparticles-methylene blue conjugation
摘要: Third-order nonlinear properties of a thiazine dye (methylene blue (MB)) and a plasmonic nanoparticle (gold nanoparticles (GNPs)) have been studied by Z-scan method with a 50 mW continues wave (CW) diode pumped solid state laser (DPSSL) operating at 532 nm. The nonlinear parameters (nonlinear refractive (NLR) index (n2) and nonlinear absorption (NLA) coefficient (β)) are determined. The mechanism of the observed NLA and nonlinear refraction is attributed respectively to reverse saturable absorption (RSA) and thermal nonlinear effects. The magnitude of the measured NLR index (n2) and NLA coefficient (β) are founded to be the order of 10?8 cm2/W and 10?4 cm/W respectively. The effect of MB and GNPs on each other has been studied. Z-scan experiments for GNPs-MB conjugation shows noticeable increase in nonlinear parameters.

Resource-efficient fibre-integrated temporal multiplexing of heralded single photons
摘要: We present a multiplexed single photon source that re-synchronises heralded single photons generated by four-wave mixing in photonic crystal fibre using a fibre delay loop controlled by a single switch. By combining the probabilities of generating heralded single photons on four consecutive pump pulses we obtain an enhancement of the per-bin single-photon delivery probability. Our source demonstrates a way in which single-photon source multiplexing may be carried out with minimised resource overhead while retaining the benefits of a robust and alignment-free platform.

Analytical Analysis of Residual Chromatic Dispersion and Self-Phase Modulation Optimal Compensation in the Fractional Domain
摘要: We present an analytical expression of residual chromatic dispersion and self-phase modulation optimal compensation with a chirped Gaussian pulse in the fractional domain. The accuracy of the expression is con?rmed by the simulation platform, which is based on the split-step Fourier method. Moreover, the simulation of a 28-GBd RZ-DQPSK optical ?ber communication system is carried out to verify the correctness when the transmission distance is less than 800 km in a standard single-mode ?ber and non-zero dispersion-shifted ?ber.

Controllable generation of second-harmonic vortex beams through nonlinear supercell grating
摘要: Lithium niobate (LiNbO3) nonlinear photonic crystals have been widely used in nonlinear wave front modulation for the p-phase difference between the second-harmonic (SH) waves from positive and negative domains. Aided by optimizing algorithms, we can control the diffraction patterns of SH vortex beams by designing nonlinear fork gratings with supercell structures in LiNbO3 crystals. In experiment, we demonstrate that the diffraction energies can be equally distributed in each order or concentrated on certain orders, in agreement with theoretical designs. Potential applications include controllable vortex beam generation, nondestructive parallel vortex detection, and so on.

摘要: Quasi-Phase Matching is an optical process needed to build up nonlinear signal from strong pump intensity and is generally obtained through periodical inversion of coherence domains of the crystal. We show that this effect can be arti?cially monitored through inserting metasurfaces along the optical path of the light in a waveguide. Sub-wavelength gratings of holes are etched in Gallium Nitride to locally change medium dispersion, allowing continuous increase of the second harmonic signal. This approach can be used to address any phase delay difference between pump and signal at will, not only π, opening up new perspectives for arbitrary phase matching conditions. It can also be implemented in highly nonlinear systems, in which it is generally hard to address phase-matching conditions, for instance waveguides with buried intersubband quantum wells or other materials such GaAs.

摘要: We present our recent experimental work involving nanocavities which enable efficient light-matter interaction in small optical mode volumes. To achieve this, we investigated photonic crystal membrane platforms for designing high-quality (Q) factor nanocavities and efficient planar waveguides. Particularly, we discuss waveguide-nanocavity coupled systems for realization of asymmetric Fano resonances which are characterized by having transmission maximum and minimum in close spectral separation (~ 1 nm) suitable for optical switching applications.

A Mixed-Ligand Metal-Organic Framework for Two-Photon Responsive Photocatalytic C-N and C-C Coupling Reactions
摘要: Multiple-photon photochemical process breaks the existing energy limitation of visible-light photocatalysis. Through careful incorporation of both bis(3,5-dicarboxyphenyl)-pyridine and bis(3,5-dicarboxyphenyl)methylpyridinium ligands into a single metal?organic framework, we reported herein photocatalytic C?N and C?C oxidative coupling reactions that evidenced the direct two-photon response process. Time-dependent luminescence decays studies demonstrated that the framework reached the same excited state by a two-photon absorption process as that reached via a single-photon absorption process, and the excited state could activate substrates even under NIR light irradiation. Under a 660 nm LEDs irradiation, both the photooxidative C?N coupling reaction of benzylamine to form benzylidene-1-phenylmethanamine, and the C?C coupling reaction between nitromethane and N-phenyl-trtrahydroisoquinoline were accelerated directly in a heterogeneous manner. Control experiments suggested that the minimal by-products were formed under the NIR light irradiation comparing to those of the UV light catalytic reactions. Importantly, photon intensity-dependent studies exhibited a nonlinear correlation between catalytic efficiency of MTV-MOFs and photon power intensity, verifying the two-photon responsive nature, which indicated that metal?organic framework with high-density and ordered photoactive motifs could enhance the two-photon absorption ability, thereby improve photocatalytic efficiency even under LEDs irradiation.
