摘要: Although electrocardiography (ECG) monitoring systems have been available in the form of wearable patches for the better part of two decades, they are limited in their ability to be utilized as inexpensive, yet vital short-term measurement devices that are (truly) completely disposable. Advancing current practices in soft conformable electronics, we present a Bluetooth-enabled, fully disposable single-lead ECG patch comprising ink-jet printed Ag-AgCl electrodes and components integrated on a single, flexible hybrid printed circuit board with an average current consumption of 3.6 mA from a 3.0 V stack of four flexible Lithium polymer batteries. As part of the Live Demonstration, our goals are to showcase the patch’s functionality including real-time continuous ECG display and fall detection, and the flexible enclosures and adhesives conferring its unique softness, strength and disposability following a 7-day lifespan.

Fluorescence detection test by black printed circuit board based microfluidic channel for polymerase chain reaction
摘要: This paper proposes the optimal structure of a PCB-based micro PCR chip constructed on a PCB substrate using commercial adhesive tapes and plastic covers. The solder mask of the PCB substrate was coated black, and the area where the reaction chamber is attached was legend printed with white silk to minimize the noise during fluorescence detection. The performance of the PCR and fluorescence detection was compared using 6 types of reaction chambers, each made with different double-sided tapes. Three of the chambers were unsuccessful in completing the PCR. The performance of the other three chambers that successfully amplified DNA was compared using Taqman probe for Chlamydia Trachomatis DNA. The amplified product was illuminated diagonally with a blue LED to excite the product just before imaging, and the LED was turned off when the image was captured to prevent quenching of the probe. The images were taken 10 seconds prior to the last extension step for each cycle using a DSLR camera. The experiments were run as a quartet for each three chambers made with different double-sided tape. The results showed that there were significant difference between the three tapes.

摘要: Polyimide films are widely used as substrates for printed circuit boards. The process of space charge accumulating in dielectric substrates is not highly desirable, since space charge distorted the parameters of the electrical circuits. This work is devoted to the study of the accumulation and relaxation of charge in films of thermoplastic polyimide R-BAPB with different degrees of crystallinity, in order to reduce the accumulated charge and the time of its relaxation. Relaxation mechanisms are analyzed and methods for reducing the relaxation time of the space charge are determined.

Miniaturized Planar Sensor Development
摘要: This paper describes the process of developing a miniature device with planar sensors utilizing electrical capacitance measurement. The project investigates the feasibility and characterization of a miniaturized planar sensor integrated on a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) chamber. A 16-planar-electrodes array, with each dimension of the electrode, 4 mm × 2 mm (length × width) was fabricated using a printed circuit board (PCB) technology due to its low cost advantage. The measurement chamber for the sensing area was fabricated using PDMS. The PDMS chamber was bonded on the PCB with a semi cured PDMS to create a round sensing area for sample loading. The mould to develop the PDMS chamber was designed using AutoCAD 2010 and was fabricated using a 3D printer. Capacitance measurement of the planar electrodes was carried out using water as the sample and was validated using a theoretical calculation. Experimental result shows that the distance of the measured electrodes is inversely proportional to the capacitance value. The range of the measured capacitances of the measurement varies from 10 pF to 20 pF. The result shows that the planar sensors are able to provide capacitance measurement within the miniaturized platform where the measured capacitance showed good agreement with the theoretical calculation.

[Materials Horizons: From Nature to Nanomaterials] Advances in Polymer Sciences and Technology (Select Papers from APA 2017) || Triboelectric-Based Kinetic Energy Harvesting Using Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)
摘要: In this paper, we have presented a metal-to-dielectric attached-electrode parallel-plate contact-mode-type triboelectric energy harvester, which converts vibrational kinetic energy to electrical power. In this, a tribo-pair made of copper as metal and PDMS as dielectric has been demonstrated. A cantilever-based design is proposed in which copper tape is attached to a thick cardboard piece which is acting as tribo-layer as well as top electrode. The bottom electrode is single-side copper clad of FR4 printed circuit board (PCB) on which PDMS is spin coated. The fabricated harvester device has been tested by providing the mechanical vibration with manual tapping on cantilever structured electrode. Measurement has been carried out using digital oscilloscope which showed that peak output voltage, current, and instantaneous power density are 29.6 V, 29.6 μA, and 100.13 μW/cm2, respectively.

Flexible Capacitive Pressure Sensor Based on PDMS Substrate and Ga-In Liquid Metal
摘要: A novel flexible pressure sensor, based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and eutectic gallium indium (EGaIn) liquid metal, was developed for detecting various applied pressures. The sensor was fabricated with PDMS polymer based electrode channels that are filled with EGaIn liquid metal. The liquid metal based electrodes were designed to form four capacitors (C1, C2, C3 and C4). Conventional PCB technology was used to manufacture the master mold to form the PDMS based electrode channels. Corona discharge treatment was employed to bond the PDMS layers at room temperature, under atmospheric pressure. The capability of the fabricated pressure sensor was demonstrated by investigating the capacitive based response of the device for varying applied pressures. Average capacitance changes ranging from 2.3% to 12.0%, 2.6% to 11.8%, 2.5% to 12.2% and 2.7% to 13.1% when compared to the based capacitance of 14.1 pF, 15.1 pF, 13.8 pF and 13.3 pF was obtained for C1, C2, C3 and C4, respectively, for applied pressures ranging from 0.25 MPa to 1.10 MPa. A linear relationship was obtained for the average capacitance change with a sensitivity of 0.11%/MPa, and a correlation coefficient of 0.9975. The results obtained thus demonstrate the feasibility of employing liquid metal based electrodes for the fabrication of flexible pressure sensing devices.

MINIATURIZATION OF TRANS-DIRECTIONAL COUPLED LINE COUPLERS USING SERIES INDUCTORS
摘要: A miniaturized trans-directional (TRD) coupled line coupler comprises series inductors and capacitor loaded coupled lines is proposed in the paper. Series inductors are added to the periodically loaded coupled lines for further miniaturization of volume. A novel equivalent circuit is presented and theoretically analyzed. Test circuits for the miniaturized and conventional 3-dB TRD couplers were designed to operate at 1.6 GHz and fabricated using printed circuit board (PCB) technology. Samples have been measured, and comparisons in terms of volume, schematic simulation results and measurement results between the miniaturized and conventional 3-dB TRD couplers have been made to validate the proposed structure. Results show that the proposed miniaturized TRD coupler achieves a size reduction of 47.6% compared to the conventional TRD coupler with similar performances.

Self-packaged grounded suspended coplanar waveguide structure
摘要: In this Letter, a novel self-packaged grounded suspended coplanar waveguide (GSCPW) structure is proposed by using the common multi-layer PCB techniques, which eliminates the drawbacks of bulky circuit size, heavy weight and difficult to be integrated as that of the traditional suspended circuits with mechanical mounting. Both self-packaging and end connection are used to reduce the wave leakage, and the multiple via holes are saved, which greatly reduce the simulation time and the fabrication complexity. The proposed GSCPW structure has been fabricated, and has been demonstrated by experimental results with a measured insertion loss of no more than 0.45 dB, and a measured return loss of better than 20 dB from dc to 4 GHz.

Dielectric Anisotropy Sensor Using Coupled Resonators
摘要: In this article, a new approach is proposed for the measurement of the uniaxial anisotropic dielectric constant of different planar samples by means of a single sensor. The sensor is based on a couple of straight-line coupled resonators in microstrip technology that can be excited in odd and even propagation modes. This sensor is designed on an isotropic substrate at the design frequency. Due to the electric field configuration specific for each mode, it is possible to relate these modes to the dielectric constant in two different directions (parallel and perpendicular) of a dielectric material placed on top of the sensor. This technique is used for the successful characterization of the dielectric constant anisotropic of anisotropic dielectrics (FR4, Rogers 4350B, and Arlon Diclad 880), and the isotropic material PTFE.

Low-loss Multimode Glass Waveguides with Beam-Expanded Fiber Connectors Enabling On-Board Optical Links
摘要: Ion-exchange glass waveguides are a very promising technology with a balanced trade-off between optical loss, integration density and fabrication costs. Graded-index multimode waveguides show low propagation loss of only 0.035 dB/cm at wavelength of 1310 nm in glass compatible with large scale manufacturing. For fiber cable connectivity, expanded beam connectors were used to terminate the waveguides by passive pick-and-place assembly, resulting in a coupling loss of ~1 dB per interface. Design and fabrication of glass waveguides are studied, and two-meter-long spiral waveguides along with 12 x 12 optical shuffle waveguide layouts made on a 9” x 12” area glass sheet are demonstrated experimentally.
