    摘要: Anti-reflective coatings (ARC) are commonly applied to photovoltaic (PV) modules in the solar industry to increase power and energy output. In addition to characterization of initial module power and angle of incidence modifier (IAM), it is important to verify that the expected gain is observed in commercial system operation. This analysis shows the increased performance of ARC First Solar CdTe PV modules compared to non-ARC equivalent modules in a commercial test in New South Wales, Australia. PPI analysis indicates a sustained ARC performance gain over time, suggesting good ARC durability. Detailed actual-expected analysis shows both array types performing at or above expected levels after almost 2 years in the field. ARC arrays show slightly greater benefit than predicted compared to non-ARC arrays.

    摘要: Renewable energy sources (RES) based generation has emerged as one of the best option due to global environmental concerns, especially for off-grid load locations like islands, mountains, etc., where diesel generators are main source of power generation. This paper presents a case study of an efficient photovoltaic (PV) generation integrated with multilevel inverter to ensure regulated power at user end. Perturb and observe (PO) algorithm based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) has been used to track maximum power for PV applications. However in PV based power generation, control problem arises due to large variation of irradiance round the clock. This problem can be overcome by hybrid PV generation system, i.e., application of secondary power source as battery and fuel cell integrated with PV generation unit. The DC output of standalone hybrid PV-SOFC-Battery generation system is inverted by a single-phase multilevel converter. This output of developed standalone hybrid PV-SOFC-Battery generation system is used to supply the single-phase load. This inverter offers less THD which is compared with three level inverter.

  • An Improved Proposed Single Phase Transformerless Inverter with Leakage Current Elimination and Reactive Power Capability for PV Systems Application

    摘要: Single-phase transformerless inverters are broadly studied in literature for residential-scale PV applications due to their great advantages in reducing system weight, cost and elevating system efficiency. The design of transformerless inverters is based on the galvanic isolation method to eliminate the generation of leakage current. Unfortunately, the use of the galvanic isolation method alone cannot achieve constant common mode voltage (CMV). Therefore, a complete elimination of leakage current cannot be achieved. In addition, modulation techniques of single-phase transformerless inverters are designed for the application of the unity power factor. Indeed, next-generation PV systems are required to support reactive power to enable connectivity to the utility grid. In this paper, a proposed single-phase transformerless inverter is modified with the clamping method to achieve constant CMV during all inverter operating modes. Furthermore, the modulation technique is modified by creating a new current path in the negative power region. As a result, a bidirectional current path is created in the negative power region to achieve reactive power generation. The simulation results show that the CMV is completely clamped at half the DC link voltage and the leakage current is almost completely eliminated. Furthermore, a reactive power generation is achieved with the modified modulation techniques. Additionally, the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the grid current with the conventional and a modified modulation technique is analyzed. The efficiency of the system is enhanced by using wide-bandgap (WBG) switching devices such as SiC MOSFET. It is observed that the efficiency of the system decreased with reactive power generation due to the bidirectional current path, which leads to increasing conduction losses.

  • Battery lifetime enhancement via smart hybrid energy storage plug-in module in standalone photovoltaic power system

    摘要: Standalone photovoltaic power system is one of the feasible solutions in rural electri?cation. However, due to the intermittent nature of solar energy and signi?cant demand variations due to small load size, energy storage devices are needed to ensure power quality and reliability. Lead-acid battery bank has been widely used in such systems to act as the intermediate bu?er to compensate the power mismatch between generation and demand, despite the poor lifetime characteristics and relatively short service life compared to other energy storage devices. Most charge controllers only provide basic battery charging functionality and prevent the battery bank from overcharging and deep-discharging. While other notable aging factors such as frequent charge-discharge transition, high C-rate and surge power are often neglected. This paper presents a smart hybrid energy storage plug-in module that aims to enhance the service life of Lead-acid battery in standalone photovoltaic-battery power systems by mitigating life-limiting factors such as current ?uctuations and surge current. This module is designed as a plug-in module that can be adopted directly in existing infrastructure in installed standalone PV-battery power system. The e?ectiveness of the proposed plug-in module in mitigating battery stresses is simulated in Matlab Simulink with actual solar irradiance data and estimated load pro?le for a rural community in Sarawak Malaysia. The simulation results are validated experimentally with the scaled-down photovoltaic-battery power system. The e?ectiveness in mitigating battery stress is quantitatively evaluated with battery health cost function, while the reduction in overall battery cost is analyzed and discussed.

  • Performance Analysis of Maximum Power Point Tracking Algorithms Under Varying Irradiation

    摘要: Photovoltaic (PV) system is one of the reliable alternative sources of energy and its contribution in energy sector is growing rapidly. The performance of PV system depends upon the solar insolation, which will be varying throughout the day, season and year. The biggest challenge is to obtain the maximum power from PV array at varying insolation levels. The maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller, in association with tracking algorithm will act as a principal element in driving the PV system at maximum power point (MPP). In this paper, the simulation model has been developed and the results were compared for perturb and observe, incremental conductance, extremum seeking control and fuzzy logic controller based MPPT algorithms at different irradiation levels on a 10.2 kW PV array. The results obtained were analysed in terms of convergence rate and their efficiency to track the MPP.

  • Separation of boron from silicon by steam-added electron beam melting

    摘要: Removal of boron from silicon is a tough task by traditional directional solidification and vacuum refining techniques, due to its large and inappropriate segregation coefficient and low saturated vapor pressure. At high temperature boron react with oxygen to form volatile boron oxides which can be evaporated. So, the removal procedure of boron from silicon melt is investigated by incorporating a small amount of water vapor above the melted surface. The results show that boron is oxidized to mainly form BO and evaporated with 28% removal efficiency by average. It is considered that oxygen atoms experience a series of physical and chemical processes, such as a chemical reaction in the bulk of the melt, evaporation from the melt surface, transportation across the gas phase and ionization due the electron beam, which is conducive to the continuous removal of boron.

  • Passive cooling of building-integrated photovolatics in desert conditions: Experiment and modeling

    摘要: The ef?ciency of photovoltaic modules depends mainly on the cell operating temperatures. Performance enhancement of building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) panels by passive cooling has been investigated both experimentally and with computational modeling. It has been shown that mounting the BIPV with a narrow channel can reduce the operating temperature of the photovoltaic panel. This enhancement in the heat transfer from the PV panel results in decreasing the average temperature of the PV panel from 5 to 10 (cid:1)C. Results show that having a 30 cm channel beneath the panel can increase the electrical output by 3e4%. This increase in PV output can translate into a signi?cant amount over the life cycle of a given PV module. Various channel aspect ratios have been tested in order to correlate the enhancement in performance to the cooling channel geometry. There is signi?cant consistency between the experimentally measured PV panel surface temperatures and those obtained from the computational model.

  • A Novel Modified Sine-Cosine Optimized MPPT Algorithm for Grid Integrated PV System under Real Operating Conditions

    摘要: This research work presents a modified sine-cosine optimized Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm for grid integration. Developed algorithm provides a maximum power (PV) panel and simplified extraction implementation with benefit high convergence velocity. Moreover, the performance and ability of Modified Sine-Cosine Optimized (MSCO) algorithm equated with recent Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithms for comparative observation. Practical responses analyzed under steady state, dynamic and partial shading conditions by using dSPACE real controlling board laboratory scale hardware implementation. The MSCO based MPPT algorithm always shown the fast convergence rate, easy implementation, less computational burden and accurate to track the optimal PV power under varying weather conditions. Experimental results provided in the article clearly shown the validation of the proposed algorithm.

    摘要: This paper presents the utilization of hardware description language VHDL-AMS (Very High-Speed Integrated Circuit plus Hardware Description Language that includes analog and mixed-signal extensions) for modeling and simulation a grid-tied 21.0 kWp real solar power plant, admitted as case study. The case study used in this research consists of a photovoltaic power system with the following features: 1) It has 90 panels of 255 Wp and 3 SMA On Grid inverters, 2) It operates without batteries, and 3) It has a dynamic power controller, called Circuitor (CDP-0), to guarantee zero injection into the grid. The main contribution of this work is modeling and simulation of a grid-tied real solar power plant, using the VHDL-AMS language (with the support of software SystemVision?), in order to develop a simulating tool capable to find the real electrical energy generation in a photovoltaic system, considering the monthly averaged direct normal radiation and the solar panel characteristics. This paper aims to present the first major developments for the future construction of a bigger VHDL-AMS tool that will allow the simulation of photovoltaic power systems, operating in a synergic way with hydroelectric power plants previously built, with the aim of optimize the coordinated operation between hydropower and solar energy, for periods of rain and hydrological drought.

    摘要: There is a global increasing trend to install fixed photovoltaic (PV) power plants on the ground. Its environmental impact compels us to think about other options on how to handle the soil use. This research examines a combination of a power plant and a secondary product, like a crop that actually requires shading to grow or improve its output. This kind of mix (PV&crops) is already under research, but no research initiative under the same focus was found in Latin America. This article reviews the traditional systems applied in agriculture to provide shading to crops (shade net and agroforestry), they are compared with a solar photovoltaic plant installed over the crop, and possible benefits are analyzed. Also, regional crops were studied where shading of a photovoltaic plant could provide benefits, a study of the final radiation distribution of a test plant was done. This research is part of an effort to establish value on new sustainable techniques in order to reduce the environmental impact of a photovoltaic power plant.
