  • Broadband Plasmonic Polarization Filter Based on Photonic Crystal Fiber with Dual-Ring Gold Layer

    摘要: Polarization ?lter is a very important optical device with extinction characteristics. Due to the design ?exibility of photonic crystal ?bers and the high excitation losses of the gold layer, the polarization ?lter based on the photonic crystal ?ber and surface plasmonic resonance e?ect is widely studied. Considering these, we present a simple and high-performance polarization ?lter using the ?nite element method. Numerical simulations show that there is a large di?erence in energy between the two polarization directions by reasonable adjustment of the structural parameters, the con?nement loss in the x-pol direction is less than that in the y-pol direction, which is suitable to realize a broadband polarization ?lter. When the ?ber length is 2 mm, the extinction ratio peak can reach ?478 dB, and the bandwidth with the extinction ratio better than ?20 dB is 750 nm, which covers communication wavelengths of 1.31 μm and 1.55 μm (1.05–1.8 μm). It also has a low insertion loss of 0.11 dB at 1.31 μm and 0.04 dB at 1.55 μm. In addition, our design has high feasibility in fabrication and better tolerance. The proposed ?lter with compactness, high extinction ratio, broad bandwidth, and low insertion loss would play an important role in the sensing detection, bio-medical, and telecommunication ?eld.

  • Design of a tunable DWDM multiplexer using four defect layers of GaAs nonlinear photonic crystals

    摘要: The transmission characteristic of a defective 1-D nonlinear photonic crystal structure is numerically simulated using transfer matrix method. The photonic crystal structure consists of four defective layers of GaAs which introduces between the alternating layers of two semiconductor materials. Here, Intensity as well as wavelength based refractive index of one semiconductor layer (GaAs) has been considered. It is theoretically studied that when the thicknesses of defected layers are decreased upto 120 nm then the transmittance of the structure is improved and it approaches 100 %. When a number of defective layers introduced in the proposed structure the transmittance of the structure is improved. Also the average line-width, quality factor and efficiency of this structure observed 0.31 nm, 6699.31 and 99.7 % when a Kerr coefficient is introduced in these 4-defect layers and it acts as a tunable DWDM demultiplexer for optical communication.

  • High sensitivity surface plasmon resonance sensor based on D-shaped photonic crystal fiber with circular layout

    摘要: A high sensitivity D-shaped photonic crystal fiber sensor based on surface plasmon resonance is proposed for refractive index sensing. By using finite element method, the sensing properties of the proposed sensor are investigated. The numerical results show a very high average sensitivity of 14600 nm/RIU with the high resolution of 6.80 × 10?6 RIU for refractive index (RI) of analytes ranging from 1.420 to 1.435. The layout of the air holes is designed to be circular and only two layers in this D-shaped photonic crystal fiber. The metallic gold is used as the surface plasmon resonance activity material, which is deposited on the polishing surface. The analyte is placed on the outer layer of the D-shaped photonic crystal fiber. This D-shaped photonic crystal fiber solves the difficulty of gold-plated film and fill analyte in the holes. The proposed PCF structure is a combination of circular layout and D-shaped, which also leads to the proposed sensor easy to fabricate and has considerable sensitivity.

  • Three-core photonic crystal fiber surface plasmon resonance sensor

    摘要: A three-core photonic crystal fiber (PCF) surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor with high performance is presented. The structure of the biosensor is easy to implement and has good repetition. The outer layer of the fiber structure is gold film. The analyte is placed on the surface of the gold film. The Full vector finite element method is used to numerical simulation and analysis the transmission mode and characteristics of the three-core PCF-SPR biosensor. The influence of sensor structure parameters on sensing performance is investigated. The structure parameters are optimized. The optimum structure parameters are given. The refractive index (RI) sensitivity of the sensor is discussed there. The results show that the average refractive index sensitivity of the sensor is 3435 nm/RIU in the sensing range of 1.33–1.40, and the resolution is 2.91 × 10?6 RIU. The sensor has the advantages of high sensitivity and high resolution. And it can be applied to real-time detection of the bio-molecules and small drug-molecules.

  • Designing low power and high contrast ratio all-optical NOT logic gate for using in optical integrated circuits

    摘要: In this paper, a new design of all-optical NOT logic gate is proposed. In this structure, a photonic crystal nano-resonator and three waveguides are used. The nano-resonator is formed by removing two dielectric rods. The contrast ratio for the proposed NOT logic gate is 20.75?dB. The maximum response time and the rate of sending information equal to 0.466?ps and 2.145?Tbit/s, respectively. In addition, very low power consumption, small size, and simple design are the main features of this logic gate. These features allow the designed structure to be used in all-optical switches. To accomplish this, two types of logic gates placement alongside each other in the optical integrated circuits are proposed and investigated. In both types, the logic gates are tested for single use and simultaneous use, and the accuracy of the performance and effect of each on the other is measured. The results clearly show that the two logic gates, along with each other, have acceptable perfor- mance and can easily be used in the optical integrated circuit.

  • A highly sensitive optofluidic-gas sensor using two dimensional photonic crystals

    摘要: Photonic crystals (PCs) are optical structures based on periodic arrays of dielectric materials. These structures enable the manipulation of photons as semiconductors do for electrons. Many optical devices with miniature sizes have been designed based on novel properties of PCs. In this paper, we proposed a new refractive index sensor with high sensitivity and high quality factor, which is implemented in a two dimensional PC with a hexagonal lattice structure. The proposed sensor has been constructed using a PC waveguide surrounded by two rows of ring-shaped holes. The emersion of Fabry-Perot interference pattern within the transmission band and its role in the determination of the features of the proposed refractive index sensor has been investigated. The finite-difference time-domain simulation results indicate that in the case of filling the holes of central waveguide and its surrounding ring-shaped holes by different materials with refractive indices from n = 1 to n = 1.5, a high sensitivity of 575 nm/RIU and a high quality factor of 7070 is achieved, which makes the proposed design applicable for liquid and also gas sensing.

  • One-Pot Preparation of Physical Hydrogel-Based Photonic Crystal

    摘要: We developed a one-pot method for the fabrication of hydrogel-based photonic crystal (PC) materials. An array of monodisperse colloids was self-assembled within a polymer solution, which generates a visible light diffractable photonic mixture. This mixture was molded and gelated into a hydrogel PC material by freeze-thaw treatment. Drug release as well as the structure colour changing properties of the PC hydrogels were discussed, and the experiment results revealed that our one-pot design and the associated modification approach has potential in efficient fabrication of PC materials.

  • Design of quad core photonic crystal fibers with flattened zero dispersion

    摘要: Two photonic crystal fiber structures with quad-core have been investigated in this paper. Both the structures are geometrically similar but have different background materials. Both PCF structures exhibit very high birefringence. However, structure with silica background material reports birefringence of the order 10-2. It is to be noted that, this PCF structure has also shown zero dispersion behavior over a wide range of telecommunication wavelength. Moreover, the other structure with lead silicate as background material has also reported very low dispersion. Thus both the PCF structures simulated show ability to mitigate the effect of polarized mode dispersion. Besides this, other propagation characteristics like confinement loss, normalized frequency and non linear coefficient have been reported.

  • Photonic crystal waveband de-multiplexers

    摘要: In this paper, we theoretically present a silicon photonic-crystal waveguide for waveband de-multiplexing. The waveguide is composed of three different microcavities, and three output ends. The three different microcavity waveguide branches allow the respective resonant wavelength channels go from the waveguide input end to the respective output end. The air hole and microcavity sizes are properly designed so that the microcavity waveguide can realize the respective transmission spectrum. With air-holes square array structure, the presented waveguide can apply to an optical window covering λ = 1.2 - 1.8 μm. The analytical techniques and numerical results indicate that the peak transmission at the three optical windows could reach 86.6, 63.5 and 97.7%. This waveguide could provide a potential use as a building block of integrated photonic circuits.
