  • Integrable all-optical pass switch

    摘要: A completely new design for an all-silicon all-optical pass switch has been proposed based on the stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in silicon nanocrystal embedded slotted photonic crystal waveguide (SPCW). Substantial miniaturisation in the device footprint and operating power has been attained by merging the benefits of the giant SRS gain and the ultra-high optical confinement of the SPCW. The proposed switch offers a tremendously high contrast ratio of (cid:1) 27 dB between the logic levels and an extraordinary bit rate of 125 Gbps.

  • A Terahertz Traveling-Wave Tube Based on Defect Photonic Crystal Waveguide

    摘要: A defect photonic crystal waveguide (DPCW) is presented as a slow-wave structure (SWS) for terahertz (THz) traveling-wave tube (TWT). Due to the characteristics of DPCW, the mode competition and backward wave are greatly depressed, improving the stability of TWT. The DPCW SWS has ?at dispersion characterization and high interaction impedance at 220 GHz. Simulation results show that saturated output power of 12.1 W, corresponding to a gain of 24.3 dB, and the 3-dB gain ripple within 20 GHz can be achieved at the center frequency of 220 GHz. The DPCW-TWT has a low working voltage at 9.52 kV compared to that of folded waveguide (FWG) SWS in this frequency band. The proposed DPCW for the THz regime is easy to fabricate and assemble using the modern fabrication processing technology.

  • A Sharply Bent Waveguide with a Microcavity Constructed by an Air-Bridge Type Two-Dimensional Photonic Crystal Slab

    摘要: An e?cient sharply bent waveguide with a microcavity constructed by an air-bridge type two-dimensional photonic crystal slab is analyzed. The method of solution is the three-dimensional ?nite di?erence time domain (FD-TD) method. The bent waveguide has a microcavity structure that connects to an input and an output waveguide ports. The radius and position of air-holes surrounding the microcavity are modi?ed to adjust the resonant frequency to the single-mode regime of the waveguides. It is con?rmed that input optical power is transmitted e?ciently to the output waveguide due to resonant tunneling caused by the microcavity.

  • Thermal design management of highly mechanically stable wavelength shifter using photonic crystal waveguide

    摘要: A thermally tunable device based on photonic crystal waveguide integrated with the micro-hotplate on its surface is proposed. A design strategy for modelling of temperature and stress in the MHP is investigated for providing robustness and high mechanical stability in the reconfigurable device. The required temperature is obtained under stress elongation fatigue limit for thermal tuning applications in optical devices. The performance parameters like confinement factor, wavelength transfer coefficient and extinction ratio are obtained as 78.2%, 0.086 nm/K and 30.04 dB respectively with an excess loss of only 0.20 dB. The response-time in the optimized device is 12 μs for achieving the switching spectral shift of 26 nm in the transmission spectrum of PCW. The reconfigurable device platform offers a great potential for wide range of tuning in switches and filters applications

    摘要: Electrodynamical characteristics of the two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguide are considered. Effect of the width of hollow waveguide channel on the dispersion characteristics and spatial distribution of electric field is analyzed. Slow wave localized modes with phase velocity less than speed of light are supported by photonic crystal waveguide and can be used for synchronization with linear electron beams in the terahertz beam-wave systems. Widening of the waveguide hollow channel does not result in significant decrease of the electric field intensity on the axis of waveguide as occur in metallic slow-wave systems.
