  • Potential, optimization and sensitivity analysis of photovoltaic-diesel-battery hybrid energy system for rural electrification in Algeria

    摘要: Integration of hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES) as an electrification solution can enhance the rural electrification situation in Algeria's predominantly remote Saharan regions, where diesel generators are used to provide very basic and limited electricity service. The exploitation of such a solution requires a sustainable, optimized HRES design. This paper presents a methodology both to optimize and to perform a sensitivity analysis of an autonomous hybrid PV-diesel-battery energy system. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and ε-constraint method were used to simultaneously minimize total system cost, unmet load, and CO2 emissions. One optimal solution was chosen among the solutions set and analyzed. The remote Saharan village of Tiberkatine, province of Tamanrasset in southern Algeria was considered as a case study. The hybrid system supplied the energy demand of 20 households. It was found that the optimal solution can supply energy without unmet load, the minimum cost of energy COE is 0.37 $/kWh with 93% renewable fraction. A sensitivity analysis was performed on the optimal system to study the impact of three parameters (load consumption, εCO2, and εLLP constraints) on the system behavior. Finally, a comparative analysis between PSO and HOMER was performed, it was found that the PSO based approach is more cost effective with more PV penetration than HOMER.

    摘要: Renewable energy based rural electrification system experiences fluctuation in generation efficiency due to various unpredictable dynamic changes such as solar irradiation levels, rainfall, dust accumulation, vegetation, etc. Due to these fluctuations the system experiences frequent power quality issues such as low voltage, power interruptions, operating the degradation of the performance and reliability of these solar micro grid systems. In this paper micro grid cluster interconnection methodology is proposed to improve the efficiency of the system. To develop real-time decisions on energy management and micro grid interconnections, we have designed an IoT system that is capable to monitor and learn the dynamic changes in power quality to control the subsystems for improving the quality of service. In this work we have analysed the need of such a system in one of the rural community having solar micro grid deployment in South India. Based on the needs we have designed and developed an end-to-end system consisting of perception layer, network layer and application layer. Detailed experimentation and laboratory and the evaluation was performed performance results are discussed in this paper.

  • Analysis of Public Subsidies to the Solar Energy Sector: Corruption and the Role of Institutions

    摘要: This study investigates the connection between rent-seeking behaviour, corruption activity and quality of institutions to empirically evaluate the unexpected implications of an energy policy for criminal activity. The object of this research is a program of public subsidies introduced in Italy in 2005, which successfully boosted the solar energy sector but seems to have generated a growth of corruption activity, arisen from the opportunity of rent extraction. In particular, according to the main hypothesis of this research, bribery is expected to rise significantly where big photovoltaic plants are concentrated and administrative procedures are more complicated. To determine the causal effect of the subsidies on corruption, the study employs a Difference-in-Difference methodology on a sample of 76 Italian provinces and exploits solar radiation as exogenous variable to discriminate the profitability of investments and bribing. Results confirm that, in poor-institutions areas, the growth of the solar sector in sunniest provinces has gone hand in hand with increasing corruption. Results suggest that policy makers should pay additional attention to the potential distortions of public policies implying large rent opportunities, in areas where the weakness of institutional settings and the bureaucratic complexities encourage illegal behaviour.

  • Novel Design for Thermal Management of PV Cells in Harsh Environmental Conditions

    摘要: The abundance of solar energy is a blessing in the Arabian Peninsula, where more than 2000 kWh/m2 density has been recorded annually. This has resulted in sincere consideration of PV harvesting in the energy matrix and smart grid. However, artefacts such as degradation of PV efficiency due to the high temperature effect have to be addressed. This paper presents a novel design of a PV cooling system using water to mitigate the effect of high temperature. Several experiments have been conducted, and the results have been analyzed. It has been found that the collected water from the panel after 40 min of cooling gained a temperature of 10 ?C approximately, during December 2016. Eventually, the efficiency was improved by 10.35% (without using MPPT) using water at ambient temperature (24 ?C) compared to the non-cooled panel. Moreover, the temperature of the panel during solar peak hours dropped from 64.3 ?C to 32 ?C and from 59 ?C to 27 ?C in 3 min for the back and front surface, respectively. These results, which are the ?rst of their kind in Qatar, constitute good incentives and pave the way for further investigation to enhance PV ef?ciency in harsh environments. This would be of paramount signi?cance, especially for scaling up PV deployment, as is planned in Qatar and GCC countries in their 2030 vision.
