  • Dual-wavelength thulium/holmium-doped fiber laser generation in 2 <i>μ</i> m region with high side-mode suppression ratio

    摘要: We demonstrate a dual-wavelength laser with emission in the 2 μm wavelength region using a thulium/holmium co-doped fiber and a non-adiabatic tapered fiber as a comb filter. The configuration employed a backward pumping scheme and dual-wavelength laser was generated at 2023.53 and 2032.82 nm. The side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) is more than 44 dB with overall good stability performance. The proposed configuration presents a simple yet practical scheme of generating 2 μm dual-wavelength laser with good SMSR. This investigation may offer a more efficient yet eye safe dual-wavelength related applications for end users.

  • Fe <sub/>3</sub> O <sub/>4</sub> nanoparticles as the saturable absorber for a mode-locked fiber laser at 1558 nm

    摘要: We demonstrated a mode-locked erbium doped fiber laser (EDFL) operating at 1558 nm by exploiting ferroferric-oxide nanoparticles (FONPs) as the saturable absorber (SA) material. FONPs, with an average diameter of ~20 nm, were prepared by a thermal decomposition method, then mixed with sodium carboxymethylcelluose to form an FONP film. The FONP SA was fabricated through a sandwiched FONP film between two fiber connectors. By inserting the FONPs SA into an EDFL cavity pumped by a 980 nm laser diode, stable passive mode-locking was achieved with a threshold pump power of ~120 mW. The obtained mode-locked laser had a central wavelength of ~1558 nm, a spectral bandwidth of ~0.8 nm, a pulse width of ~4.35 ns, and a repetition rate of ~37.32 MHz. Furthermore, a maximum average power of ~17 mW was obtained for a pump power of 340 mW. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that it has been demonstrated that FONPs can be used for constructing mode-locked fiber lasers.

  • Resonant electro-optic frequency comb

    摘要: High-speed optical telecommunication is enabled by wavelength-division multiplexing, whereby hundreds of individually stabilized lasers encode information within a single-mode optical fibre. Higher bandwidths require higher total optical power, but the power sent into the fibre is limited by optical nonlinearities within the fibre, and energy consumption by the light sources starts to become a substantial cost factor. Optical frequency combs have been suggested to remedy this problem by generating numerous discrete, equidistant laser lines within a monolithic device; however, at present their stability and coherence allow them to operate only within small parameter ranges. Here we show that a broadband frequency comb realized through the electro-optic effect within a high-quality whispering-gallery-mode resonator can operate at low microwave and optical powers. Unlike the usual third-order Kerr nonlinear optical frequency combs, our combs rely on the second-order nonlinear effect, which is much more efficient. Our result uses a fixed microwave signal that is mixed with an optical-pump signal to generate a coherent frequency comb with a precisely determined carrier separation. The resonant enhancement enables us to work with microwave powers that are three orders of magnitude lower than those in commercially available devices. We emphasize the practical relevance of our results to high rates of data communication. To circumvent the limitations imposed by nonlinear effects in optical communication fibres, one has to solve two problems: to provide a compact and fully integrated, yet high-quality and coherent, frequency comb generator; and to calculate nonlinear signal propagation in real time. We report a solution to the first problem.

  • Widely Wavelength-tunable Mode-locked Fiber Laser Based on a 45° Tilted Fiber Grating and Polarization Maintaining Fiber

    摘要: We present a passively mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber laser with tunable parameters including central wavelength, 3dB bandwidth and pulse duration. The mode-locking mechanism of the laser is realized by using single-walled carbon nanotubes polyvinyl alcohol (SWCNTs-PVA) composite film as saturable absorber. The tunable operation is implemented via a fiber birefringence filter consisting of a polarization maintaining (PM) fiber and a Brewster fiber grating. The laser achieves a maximum spectral tuning range of 36 nm with 8 cm PM fiber. The maximum spectral width variation of 5.19 nm is acquired when the PM fiber is 12 cm. Simultaneously, the spectral widths of pulses at different central wavelengths are also adjustable. Furthermore, the total cavity length is 8.28 m, which is the shortest cavity length to obtain such wide tuning range in an Erbium-doped fiber laser based on SWCNTs.

  • Soliton mode-locking in thulium-doped fibre laser by evanescent field interaction with reduced graphene oxide-titanium dioxide saturable absorber

    摘要: Soliton mode locking pulse generation in a thulium-doped fibre laser (TDFL) by evanescent wave interaction from a D-shaped fiber coated with rGO-TiO2 nanoparticles is proposed and demonstrated. The rGO-TiO2 nanoparticle coating serves as a saturable absorber (SA), and generates a mode locked pulse with a repetition rate, average output power and pulse width of 9.28 MHz, 11.17 nW and 1.49 ps respectively. The proposed laser has a central lasing wavelength of 1939.4 nm, which is the longest as of yet generated by evanescent wave interaction in a TDFL. An average signal-to-noise ratio of around 50 dB is obtained from the generation pulse, with minimal power and wavelength fluctuations indicating high stability. The proposed laser would have significant applications in various fields, particularly medicine for its operation in the eye-safe region of 2 μm.

  • Spectrally Flat Supercontinuum Generation in a ZBLAN Fiber Pumped by Erbium-Doped Mode-Locked Fiber Laser

    摘要: We have experimentally demonstrated the flat supercontinuum (SC) generation using a 10-m-long ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF (ZBLAN) fluoride fiber pumped by an erbium-doped mode-locked fiber laser incorporating carbon-nanotube-based saturable absorbers. In order to improve the spectral flatness of SC, the standardized single-mode fiber with different lengths is connected to the output of the mode-locked fiber laser before the pulse amplification. The generated SC with ZBLAN fiber exhibits the best spectral flatness with fluctuation less than 1.29 dB over the wavelength of 1571.8 nm ? 1803.1 nm, showing potential applications in optical sensing.

  • Dual-wavelength passively mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser based on a $\text{SnSe}_2$-PVA saturable absorber

    摘要: In this paper, tin diselenide (SnSe2) was successfully prepared with liquid phase exfoliation method and embedded into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a saturable absorber (SA) in a dual-wavelength passively mode-locked Yb-doped fiber laser. Stable mode-locked pulses with a maximum average output power of 2.55 mW and a slope efficiency of 1.3% at the fundamental repetition rate of 333 kHz were achieved. By properly adjusting polarization state, four kinds of dual-wavelength fundamental frequency mode-locked pulses with peak wavelength intervals of 0.4, 1.0, 1.5 and 1.9 nm were obtained, and corresponding waveforms with different single pulse shapes were investigated in our work. A maximum signal to noise ratio (SNR) of 71.04 dB indicates that SnSe2 is promising to serve as SA in passively mode-locked fiber lasers.

  • Axial Micro-Strain Sensor Based on Resonance Demodulation Technology Via Dual-Mode CMECF

    摘要: This paper firstly and experimentally demonstrates an in-fiber axial micro-strain sensing head, combined with a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) based on the concentric multilayer elliptical-core fiber (CMECF). This MZI with a high extinction ratio (about 15 dB) is successfully achieved with a CMECF-single mode fiber-CMECF (CSC) structure. The MZI sensor theory and the resonance demodulation technology are systematically described in this paper. In this CSC structure, two sections of the CMECF have a role as the mode generator and coupler, respectively. LP01 and LP11 even, which have similar excitation coefficients, are two dominated propagating mode groups supported in the CMECF. On account of the distinct dual-mode property, a good stability of this sensor is realized. The detected resonance in the MZI shifts as the axial micro-strain variated due to the strong interaction between higher order modes. High sensitivity of ~1.78 pm/με is experimentally achieved within the range of 0 με ? 1250 με, meanwhile, the intensity fluctuation is below 0.38 dB.

  • A curvature sensor based on single mode-no-core-twisted single mode fiber structure

    摘要: A high sensitivity curvature sensor based on single mode-no-core-twisted single mode (SNTS) fiber structure is proposed. The configuration is simply formed by twisting a section of single mode fiber (SMF) in the single mode-no-core-single mode structure. Due to the twist is applied, the cladding mode excited in the SMF can be recoupled into the core. The core modes and cladding modes excited in the same fiber form a Mach-Zehnder interference (MZI) which is sensitive to the curvature change. A high sensitivity of 16.28 nm/m?1 with a good linearity has been achieved in the range of 0.96–1.92 m?1, and the repeatability of the curvature sensor is 3.6 × 10?3 nm/m?1. The temperature sensitivity is 0.03 nm/°C within the temperature range from 30 to 100 °C.

  • Investigation on the crack fracture mode and edge quality in laser dicing of glass-anisotropic silicon double-layer wafer

    摘要: This work puts forward numerical and experimental investigations on laser dicing of glass-anisotropic single-crystal silicon double-layer wafer using laser induced thermal-crack propagation (LITP). A semiconductor continuous wave laser working at the defocusing mode serves as volumetric heat source for glass layer while as surface heat source for silicon layer. Based on the classical fracture theory, a static seam-type crack is introduced under the circumstance of ABAQUS to simulate the crack fracture modes in glass layer as well as silicon layer with crystal planes of (100), (110) and (111) during laser dicing in different dicing directions. In the experiments, processing parameters are kept the same as the simulations and typical dicing directions obtained from simulations are also used. The surface morphologies of crack edges are measured by the optical microscope and surface profiler. Through the comparison of numerical and experimental results it is discovered that for the specific substrate, the evolution of crack edge qualities in different dicing directions and different layers can be interpreted based on the corresponding stress distribution and stress intensity factor (SIF) ratio explicitly. And most important of all, the anisotropy of silicon layer has significant influence on the fracture mode and edge quality of crack in both layers.
