High-energy dissipative soliton resonance and rectangular noise-like pulse in a figure-9 Tm fiber laser
摘要: We experimentally demonstrate a direct generation of high-energy dissipative soliton resonance (DSR) and rectangular noise-like pulse (NLP) in a figure-9 thulium-holmium-doped mode-locked fiber laser. The pulse duration and average output power of the DSR can be tuned from 33.5 ns to 144.6 ns, and from 100.25 mW to 677.5 mW, respectively. The maximum of pulse energy is 713.2 nJ without wave breaking at pump power of 6.7 W, which is the highest energy of DSR in the region of 2 μm, to the best of our knowledge. In addition, the rectangular NLP with 452 nJ pulse bunch energy is also obtained.

Ultrafast mode-locked dual-wavelength thulium-doped fiber laser using a Mach-Zehnder interferometric filter
摘要: A simple and robust method to generate a dual-wavelength mode-locked laser using a tunable Mach-Zehnder filter (TMZF) and a single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) based saturable absorber (SA) is proposed and demonstrated. The proposed laser uses a thulium-doped fiber for lasing in the two-micron region and exploits the interferometric spectrum of the TMZF to produce dual peaks with nearly equal magnitude. SWCNT based SA enables mode-locking at a threshold value of 150.4 mW with distinct dual-wavelength peaks at 1919.2 nm and 1963.7 nm. The peaks have a calculated pulse width of 1.8 ps and 1.6 ps, respectively with a repetition rate of 9.1 MHz with a relatively high optical-signal-to-noise ratio value of 59.1 dB. The output is also observed to remain unchanged over time, indicating high stability. The proposed laser has a promising application, particularly in ultrafast gas molecular spectroscopy and sensing.

70?nm, broadly tunable passively Q-switched thulium-doped fiber laser with few-layer Mo0.8W0.2S2 saturable absorber
摘要: In this work, a thin Mo0.8W0.2S2 film is proposed and fabricated for the use as a saturable absorber (SA) in a thulium-doped fiber laser (TDFL) cavity. The few-layer Mo0.8W0.2S2 nanoparticles are obtained through hydrothermal exfoliation as a thin film and suspended in a polymer host, which is then placed between two fiber ferrules to serve as an SA. The proposed laser is capable of generating outputs with a maximum repetition rate of 65.79 kHz and a minimum pulse width of 1.84 μs at the maximum pump power of 168.92 mW, as well as pulse energies and peak powers as high as 35.73 nJ and 13.92 mW. The laser also has a broad tuning output from 1927.2 nm to 1996.8 nm, giving a tuning band of about 70 nm. The generated pulses are stable with a signal-to-noise ratio of 50.0 dB. The proposed laser has a high potential for operation near the 2000 nm wavelength region, with multiple bio-medical and sensing applications.

Mode-locked thulium doped fiber laser with zinc oxide saturable absorber for 2?μm operation
摘要: In this work, a 2.0-micron mode-locked thulium doped fiber laser is demonstrated using zinc oxide (ZnO) as the saturable absorber (SA) in a thulium doped fiber laser (TDFL). The ZnO nanorods was prepared by the facile hydrothermal method, and then embedded in polyethylene oxide composite film to form the SA. The laser is capable of generating soliton pulses at a central wavelength of 1945.45 nm with a 3-dB bandwidth of 3.47 nm. The pulse width is measured to be 1.395 ps, only slightly higher than the calculated transform-limited pulse width of 1.15 ps. The peak power of the generated mode-locked pulses is then calculated to be as high as 41.88 W, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 50.5 dB. The fabricated ZnO film in this work would allow the generation of mode-locked pulses, which could be useful for applications in spectroscopy and medicine due to the eye-safe and highly sensitive nature of the 2.0-micron region.

Pure gold saturable absorber for generating Q-switching pulses at 2?μm in Thulium-doped fiber laser cavity
摘要: We experimentally demonstrate Q-switched Thulium-doped fiber laser operating at 1949.19 nm using pure gold saturable absorber (Au-SA) as a Q-switcher. The Au-SA was fabricated by depositing gold particles molecules using electron beam evaporation on the surface of a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film. Subsequently, stable Q-switched pulses were obtained within the 1552 nm pump power range from 343.1 to 467.3 mW, with repetition rate tuned from 11.7 kHz to 21.95 kHz. At 467.3 mW pump power, the TDFL produced pulses train with the pulse width of 2.6 μs and the maximum pulse energy of 89.8 nJ. These results propose that pure gold could be a promising saturable absorber for pulse generation in 2 μm wavelength region.

Mode-locked near-infrared thulium doped fibre laser using evanescent field effect with Bi <sub/>2</sub> O <sub/>3</sub> saturable absorber
摘要: Using the evanescent field effect, a high power passively mode-locked laser with a pulse duration of 1.85 ps and the pulse energy of 13.15 pJ is demonstrated. A Bi2O3 solution is used as a saturable absorber (SA) on a side polished fibre incorporated into a thulium doped fibre laser cavity for operation in the mid-infrared range. The 37.61% SA has a modulation depth and creates a highly stable mode-locked pulse output with a short pulse duration. The calculated net cavity dispersion at central wavelength is ?1.4 ps2, indicating operation is in the anomalous dispersion regime and confirmed by the presence of Kelly’s side-bands observed in the generated optical spectrum. Radio frequency analysis reveals a high signal to noise ratio, making this laser stable for use in telecommunication systems.

Nanotube mode-locked, wavelength and pulsewidth tunable thulium fiber laser
摘要: Mode-locked oscillators with highly tunable output characteristics are desirable for a range of applications. Here, with a custom-made tunable filter, we demonstrate a carbon nanotube (CNT) mode-locked thulium fiber laser with widely tunable wavelength, spectral bandwidth, and pulse duration. The demonstrated laser’s wavelength tuning range reached 300 nm (from 1733 nm to 2033 nm), which is the widest-ever that was reported for rare-earth ion doped fiber oscillators in the near-infrared. At each wavelength, the pulse duration can be regulated by changing the filter’s bandwidth. For example, at ~1902 nm, the pulse duration can be adjusted from 0.9 ps to 6.4 ps (the corresponding output spectral bandwidth from 4.3 nm to 0.6 nm). Furthermore, we experimentally and numerically study the spectral evolution of the mode-locked laser in presence of a tunable filter, a topic that has not been thoroughly investigated for thulium-doped fiber lasers. The detailed dynamical change of the mode-locked spectra is presented and we observed gradual suppression of the Kelly sidebands as the filter’s bandwidth is reduced. Further, using the polarization-maintaiing (PM) cavity ensures that the laser is stable and the output laser’s polarization extinction ratio is measured to exceed 20 dB.

Self-wavelength-sweeping in a bi-directional thulium-doped fiber ring laser
摘要: We report for the first time the self-wavelength-sweeping phenomenon of a bi-directional thulium-doped fiber ring laser. The laser wavelength can spontaneously sweep in both lasing directions at a rate up to 0.2 nm s?1 over 15 nm sweeping range in the 1.95 μm wavelength region. The sweeping rate can be controlled by simply changing the state of polarization of the laser cavity. The laser can be tuned to generate a periodical wavelength-swept output with microsecond pulses in the time domain. The sweep rate can also be tuned to zero to give a static lasing wavelength.

Dual-wavelength thulium/holmium-doped fiber laser generation in 2 <i>μ</i> m region with high side-mode suppression ratio
摘要: We demonstrate a dual-wavelength laser with emission in the 2 μm wavelength region using a thulium/holmium co-doped fiber and a non-adiabatic tapered fiber as a comb filter. The configuration employed a backward pumping scheme and dual-wavelength laser was generated at 2023.53 and 2032.82 nm. The side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) is more than 44 dB with overall good stability performance. The proposed configuration presents a simple yet practical scheme of generating 2 μm dual-wavelength laser with good SMSR. This investigation may offer a more efficient yet eye safe dual-wavelength related applications for end users.
