  • Phase Noise Characterization and EEPN of a Full C-band Tunable Laser in Coherent Optical Systems

    摘要: We perform phase noise characterization of a tunable laser source that is capable of tuning to 103 channels between 1527.6-1568.36 nm with 50 GHz grid spacing between the channels. The measured frequency modulation (FM) noise power spectral density (PSD) is reproduced by simulations in order to investigate the impact of equalization-enhanced phase noise (EEPN) in a coherent transmission system. The simulations are performed on a 30 Gbaud channel with 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) and using pilot-based carrier phase estimation with 3% overhead. By performing extensive system simulations, we show the impact of different accumulated dispersion. Furthermore, we show the possibility to overcome EEPN related penalties by using a local oscillator (LO) with reduced low frequency phase noise or flat FM-noise PSD profiles with lower linewidths.

    摘要: Tunable laser sources in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectral range have been of great interest for a variety of applications such as molecular spectroscopy and trace gas detection. Difference-frequency generation (DFG) based on nonlinear frequency conversion in nonlinear crystals has been an effective approach to realize tunable mid-IR laser sources [1]. Among nonlinear crystals, orientation-patterned (OP) GaAs has been highly attractive for mid-IR DFG laser sources due to its large nonlinear susceptibility, lack of birefringence, wide transparency range (0.9 – 17 μm), high thermal conductivity, and high laser-damage-threshold [2,3]. Here, we report the generation of broadly tunable mid-IR radiation across 12.65 – 15 μm based on the DFG approach using an OP-GaAs crystal.

  • Growth and laser performance of Tm:SrGdGa3O7 crystal

    摘要: The Tm:SrGdGa3O7 crystal was grown by the Czochralski (CZ) method. Continuous-wave, Q-switched, and tunable laser performance are demonstrated based on Tm:SrGdGa3O7 crystal for the first time. The maximum continuous-wave output power was 0.49 W under the absorbed pump power of 8.6 W. Using a commercial WS2 as the saturable absorber, the passively Q-switched laser was successfully achieved. The maximum output power of Q-switched reached up to 0.13 W with the repetition rate of 21.4 kHz and the pulse width of 1.1 μs. A tunable laser was obtained with the whole tuning range of 60.8 nm from 1907.0 to 1967.8 nm.

  • Tunable 3 μm optical vortex parametric oscillator

    摘要: We propose a tunable millijoule-level 3-μm vortex laser formed with a 1-μm ns vortex pulse-pumped quasi-phase matching MgO-doped periodically poled lithium niobate (MgO:PPLN) optical parametric oscillator with a singly resonant plane-parallel cavity con?guration. The wavelength of the vortex output is tuned within the range of 3.360–3.677 μm merely by controlling the temperature of the MgO:PPLN crystal. The maximum vortex output energy of 2.14 mJ is obtained at the maximum pump energy of 21 mJ, and corresponds to an optical to optical conversion e?ciency of 10.2% and a photon conversion e?ciency of 33.5%. The handedness of the vortex output is controlled just by inverting the handedness of the pump vortex beam. ? 2018 The Japan Society of Applied Physics
