摘要: In this paper, we extend our previous study on BitTorrent, the most popular peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol, to investigate different aspects related to its energy efficiency in IP over WDM (IP/WDM) networks, validating the power savings previously obtained by modeling and simulation through experimental results. Our contributions can be summarized as follows: First, we compare the energy consumption of our previously proposed energy efficient BitTorrent protocol to that of the original BitTorrent protocol and the client–server (C-S) schemes over bypass IP/WDM networks considering a range of network topologies with different number of nodes and average hop counts. Our results show that for a certain swarm size, the energy efficient BitTorrent protocol achieves higher power savings in networks with lower number of nodes as the opportunity to localize traffic increases. Second, we extend our previously developed energy efficient BitTorrent heuristic enhancing its performance by allowing peers to progressively traverse more hops in the network if the number of peers in the local node is not sufficient. Third, we extend our previously developed mixed integer linear programming model to optimize the location as well as the upload rates of operator controlled seeders (OCS) to mitigate the performance degradation caused by leechers leaving after finishing the downloading operation. Fourth, we compare the power consumption of video on demand (VoD) services delivered using content distribution networks (CDN), P2P, and a promising hybrid CDN-P2P architecture over bypass IP/WDM core networks. A MILP model is developed to carry out the comparison. We investigate two scenarios for the hybrid CDN-P2P architecture: the H-MinNPC model where the model minimizes the IP/WDM network power consumption and the H-MinTPC model where the model minimizes the total power consumption including the network and the CDN datacenters power consumption. Finally, we carry out an experimental evaluation of the original and energy efficient BitTorrent heuristics.

Extenuation of phase shift influenced nonlinear impairments in fiber optics network
摘要: Transmission of ultrahigh data rates through fiber optics networks (FONs) over long transmission distances in an intensity-dependent refractive index medium suffers from nonlinear self-steepening (NSS) and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). In this paper, a FON model is proposed to compensate NSS and SRS impairments, using a theoretical model and its verification through simulation for different set of parameters. The proposed FON is designed to support 8, 16, and 32 channels with dual polarization quadrature phase shift keying modulation format. The analysis is performed for a range of values for the transmission medium including nonlinear effective area, nonlinear refractive index, and nonlinear dispersion. Moreover, the performance of the proposed model is evaluated in terms of launch power, polarization variations, received power, and length of transmission fiber. The overall work is analyzed for transmission distances up to 1200 km for performance metric of bit error rate, eye diagram, and received symbols constellations diagram.

Optical Fiber Communications (Principles and Applications) || WDM Concepts and Components
摘要: Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is the second major fiber–optic revolution in the field of telecommunications. WDM is a technology which combines many different segments of wavelength range, called different independent optical channels, into the same optical fiber. The best feature of an optical fiber is that it has a wide spectral region which ranges from 1260 nm to 1675 nm. The light source used in high-capacity optical fiber communication systems emits a narrow wavelength band of less than 1 nm, thus enabling simultaneous transmission of many optical channels using the same optical fiber. WDM allows a huge increase in capacity of an optical fiber as compared to point-to-point link that carries only a single optical channel. Another big advantage of WDM is that different transmission formats can be supported by various optical channels. It means that without the need of common signal format, any data rate can be transmitted simultaneously and independently using the common optical fiber.

Enhancement of Signals Characteristics with Least Effect of Optical Communication Losses for Dense Optical Communication Systems
摘要: In this paper, the major aim is to enhance the bandwidth and therefore increase the capacity of the optical fibre communication system by reducing the dispersion in the fibre. Dispersion compensation is necessary to reduce losses and cost of the system. In this paper, we are basically focusing on reducing or decreasing chromatic dispersion. Chromatic dispersion is a type of dispersion in which pulse broadening occurs due to delay in different spectral components. We here make use of dispersion compensated fibre (DCF) for reducing the dispersion in the WDM system. Here, we basically use three dispersion compensated techniques (pre-compensation, post-compensation and mix compensation). The comparison in the three models of dispersion compensated technique is made in terms of transmission power vs. Q factor and also transmission power vs. Bit Error Rate.

Configurable triple wavelength semiconductor optical amplifier fiber laser using multiple broadband mirrors
摘要: A configurable, triple wavelength fiber laser based on broadband mirrors (BBMs) and an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) is demonstrated. The laser uses a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) as the primary gain medium due to its inhomogeneous broadening property that allows for the generation high intensity lasing wavelengths. The combination of the AWG and BBMs allows for triple lasing wavelength outputs with channel spacing from 0.8 to 4.0 nm to be obtained. The generated output is adjustable between 1540.6 and 1548.6 nm. The proposed SOA-based system is stable and can be used as a reserve laser source for wavelength division multiplexing systems.

摘要: Access network is that part of telecommunication system which connects multiple subscribers to the service provider. Currently deployed access networks mostly make use of copper cables like a twisted pair or a coaxial cable [1]. It seems, however, that they do not provide sufficient data rates to fulfil continuously increasing needs for broadband telecommunication services. One of the most promising approaches for providing high-speed, all-optical, symmetric transmission of digital signals are passive optical networks using the wavelength division multiplexing technique (WDM-PON) [2]. WDM-PON access systems can offer large capacity, high transmission rate and data security. On the other hand, they require low-cost, highly reliable devices of high overall performance. It seems that the photonic integration technology based on indium phosphide is a platform of choice to meet these requirements, as it enables fabrication of compact, reliable and energy efficient devices in a form of monolithic chips, comprising multiple active and passive components. InP-based photonic circuits can provide the functionality of light generation, propagation, modulation and detection for optical signals of wavelengths around 1550 nm.

摘要: Long-wavelength vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) technologies can represent an alternative solution for the development of transmitters with reduced cost, power consumption and footprint for very-high capacity metropolitan area systems. Exploiting direct modulation (DM) and advanced modulation formats, such as discrete multitone (DMT), and aggregating multiple DM-VCSELs emitting in the C-band with dense wavelength division multiplexers (WDM) in SOI chips allows to achieve multi-Tb/s transmitter module with 25 GHz granularity [1]. The interplay between the frequency chirp induced by VCSELs DM and the tight filtering of network WDM multiplexers plays a crucial role in the transmission performance. In this paper, we compare the adoption of two different long-wavelength InP VCSEL technologies: high-bandwidth short-cavity devices and MEMS-based widely-tuneable VCSELs [1]. We evaluate their performance in case of DM employing DMT modulation, providing more than 50-Gb/s capacity per wavelength; coherent detection (COH-D) is used to target hundreds of kilometres distances thanks to DSP chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation.

摘要: We experimentally study data suppression characteristics of a semiconductor optical amplifier with a Faraday rotator mirror used for wavelength-reuse WDM-PON. Bidirectional transmission over 10 km assisted by spectral trimming using a Fabry-Perot etalon is demonstrated.
