  • Review of the main colour vision clinical assessment tests

    摘要: Introduction: Congenital colour vision deficiencies affect 8% of the male and 0.5% of the female population. The study of colour vision is a complex process due to several factors: the psychophysics of vision itself, the difficulty to establish mathematical models for its analysis, the vague correlation of results between different tests, and the influence of external factors such as lighting, the tests condition, or the experience of the examiner and the patient. In the present document, a simplified review was carried out on the main colour vision tests available in clinical practice. Material and methods: Once a filtered preliminary review was made of the bibliography related to the study of colour vision using the PubMed search tool, the most used tests in clinical practice were selected according to their frequency of use and the purpose for which they were applied. A bibliographic study was then carried out on each particular test according to the design of the shown stimuli, its target population, and its sensitivity and specificity. Results: From the 95 publications found using the PubMed search tool, in 41 of them, colour tests were used by researchers in their methodology. From the 64 colour tests used, 19 of them were different (with 4 of them being different tests adapted by research groups, and 2 of them carried out online). The most used tests were the following: Ishihara test (10.88%), Farnsworth–Munsell (7.04%), Farnsworth–Munsell 100 Hue (6.4%), Cambridge Colour Test (3.84%), Hardy–Rand–Rittler (3.2%), tests developed by the groups (2.56%), the Anomaloscope (1.28%), the online tests (1.28%) and, finally, Colour Assessment and Diagnosis (0.64%), Pflüger Trident Colour Plates (0.64%), Toothguide Training Box (0.64%), Lanthony Desaturated D-15 (0.64%), City University Test (0.64%), Universal Colour Discrimination Test (0.64%), and Rabin Cone Contrast Test (0.64%). Conclusions: The Anomaloscope is the 'gold standard' in terms of colour vision testing, despite its incompatibility with daily clinical practice. It is fairly complex to use, difficult to understand for children, and its practice requires having the time available. Nevertheless, it is possible to reach an accurate approximation through the combination of some of the tests listed in this article. The above mentioned tests are a good alternative to determine the presence of dyschromatopsia in settings closer to daily clinical practice or in less controlled settings than a clinical study. The major drawback among the wide range of tests available for the study of colour vision is the difficulty to compare results between tests, since units of the reported data are usually different, and experience is required for its correct interpretation. Currently, there is no consensus on which colour test is the most complete. It is, therefore, advisable to use at least 2 tests in order to ensure diagnoses, and have more extensive information about the visual perception of patients.

  • Facial Skin Lifting and Brightening Following Sleep on Copper Oxide Containing Pillowcases

    摘要: Copper plays a key role in many of the physiological processes that occur in the skin. Previously it was found that sleeping on pillowcases impregnated with microscopic copper oxide particles results in reduction of wrinkles and ?ne lines. In the current study, it was examined if sleeping on copper oxide impregnated pillowcases results also in skin lifting and skin brightness. A four week, double blind, randomized study was performed, during which 45 women, aged 37–54, slept on copper oxide containing pillowcases (test group, n = 23) or on control pillowcases without copper oxide (control group, n = 22). Facial and eye skin surface was measured using an F-ray 3D measurement system and surface analysis was conducted using Image-pro? plus. Skin brightness was measured using a tristimulus colorimeter. Sleeping on the test pillowcases resulted in statistically signi?cant skin lifting on the cheek area (p = 0.039) and eye area (p = 0.001) after four weeks of use as compared to baseline. The mean skin brightness in those sleeping on the test pillowcases increased after two (p = 0.024) and four weeks (p = 0.008). No statistically signi?cant changes occurred during the study in the study participants using the control pillowcases. Statistically signi?cant differences between both groups were recorded at two and four weeks for skin brightness and skin lifting, respectively. In conclusion, sleeping on copper oxide containing pillowcases results in facial skin lifting and brightness of the skin.

  • A fluorometric method for determination of the activity of T4 polynucleotide kinase by using a DNA-templated silver nanocluster probe

    摘要: The authors describe a turn-off fluorometric method for the determination of the activity of the T4 polynucleotide kinase (T4 PNK). It is based on the use of DNA-templated silver nanoclusters (AgNCs). DNA probes with terminal 5′ hydroxy groups are used as substrates for DNA phosphatases. If subsequently treated with T4 PNK and Lambda exonuclease (λ exo), the AgNC DNA probes with a modified C-rich sequence and the G-rich sequence is separated. Upon their separation, the strong fluorescence (with excitation/emission maxima at 580/650 nm) that is caused by the proximity of the G-rich region and the C-rich region in the AgNCs decreases sharply. This enabled the fluorometric kinetic determination of the activity of T4 PNK. The assay is characterized by a wide linear range (from 0.01 to 12.5 U·mL?1), a low detection limit (0.01 U·mL?1) and short assay time (typically 60 min). This makes it a promising tool for use in studying processes related to DNA phosphorylation, in drug discovery and in diagnostics.

  • Clinical Value of Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography Combined with Ultrasound in Detection of Primary Tumors in Patients with Malignant Ascites

    摘要: Objective: To investigate and discuss the clinical value of positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) combined with ultrasound in detection of primary tumors in patients with malignant ascites (MA). Materials and Methods: A total of 122 malignant tumor patients with ascites as the initial symptom and 48 patients with benign ascites were enrolled in this study. All patients underwent PET-CT and abdominal B-ultrasound examinations. The corresponding specificity, sensitivity, accuracy rate, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of PET-CT, abdominal B-ultrasound, and combined detection group were recorded, respectively, with pathological findings as the gold standards. Statistical Product and Service Solutions 17.0 software was used for statistical analysis. p < 0.05 suggested that the difference was statistically significant. Results: The detection rate of primary foci through PET-CT was 79.5%, of which the detection rate of primary foci of MA derived from gastric cancer was the highest. The detection rate of primary foci through B-ultrasound was 62.5%, which is the highest for MA derived from ovarian cancer. B-ultrasound had the highest specificity in diagnosing the primary foci of MA (73.2%), PET-CT had the highest sensitivity in diagnosing the primary foci of MA (91.7%), and PET-CT combined with abdominal B-ultrasound had the highest sensitivity and accuracy in diagnosing the primary foci of MA (98.1% and 89.1%, respectively). The diagnostic accuracy rate of B-ultrasound was the highest in detecting tumors >5 cm (77.0%), whereas that of PET-CT was the highest in detecting tumors of 3–5 cm (84.2%). Conclusion: The PET-CT combined with ultrasound is conducive to improving the diagnostic efficiency for primary tumors in patients with MA.

  • Cross-Sectional and Longitudinal Assessment of Retinal Sensitivity in Patients With Childhood-Onset Stargardt Disease

    摘要: Purpose: We assess cross-sectional and longitudinal microperimetry and full-field static perimetry-derived retinal sensitivity with conventional and volumetric indices of retinal function in childhood-onset Stargardt disease (STGD1). Methods: Subjects with molecularly confirmed childhood-onset STGD1 underwent full-field static perimetry and/or microperimetry using custom designed grids. Mean sensitivity (MS) and total volume (VTOT) were computed for each microperimetry test. MS, VTOT, and central field volume (V30) were computed for each full-field static perimetry test. Subjects under 18 years old at baseline were classified as children and subjects 18 years or older as adults. Results: A total of 43 children (mean age at baseline, 13.0 years; range, 8–17) and 13 adults (mean age at baseline, 23.1 years; range, 18–32) were included in the analysis. For full-field static perimetry and microperimetry for both subgroups, intraclass correlation coefficient results for MS and volumetric indices were good to excellent, indicating strong test–retest reliability. Interocular symmetry in terms of baseline measurements and the annual rate of progression was observed. A greater rate of progression was observed in childhood. Conclusions: To our knowledge, this is the first prospective study of retinal sensitivity in a large cohort of molecularly confirmed subjects with childhood-onset STGD1 demonstrating that children with STGD1 can reliably undertake detailed functional testing. Moreover, using custom designed grids and subsequent topographic analysis, volumetric indices of retinal function provide a reliable measure of retinal sensitivity.

  • Smart Optical Catheters for Epidurals

    摘要: Placing the needle inside the epidural space for locoregional anesthesia is a challenging procedure, which even today is left to the expertise of the operator. Recently, we have demonstrated that the use of optically sensorized needles significantly improves the effectiveness of this procedure. Here, we propose an optimized configuration, where the optical fiber strain sensor is directly integrated inside the epidural catheter. The new design allows the solving of the biocompatibility issues and increases the versatility of the former configuration. Through an in vivo study carried out on a porcine model, we confirm the reliability of our approach, which also opens the way to catheter monitoring during insertion inside biological spaces.

  • Diode laser surgery versus electrocautery in the treatment of inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia: a randomized double-blind clinical trial

    摘要: Objectives To compare the efficacy and safety of diode laser and electrocautery techniques for inflammatory fibrous hyperplasia (IFH) removal. Materials and methods In this randomized double-blind clinical trial, 40 individuals were randomly allocated to two groups: group 1 (G1) consisted of 20 individuals assigned to treatment with diode laser and group 2 (G2) consisted of 20 individuals assigned to treatment with electrocautery. The following transoperative parameters were evaluated: bleeding, temperature, and surgical technique parameters (energy deposited on tissue, flow rate, and time of incision). The postoperative parameters evaluated were as follows: pain, functional alterations (chewing, speaking), analgesic medication intake, swelling, healing of the wound area, and patient satisfaction. Results Among the 40 individuals included in the study, four (two in G1 and two in G2) did not complete the entire follow-up. Therefore, 36 individuals (18 in G1 and 18 in G2) participated. Participants in G1 and in G2 had similar demographic characteristics. No difference regarding the trans- or postoperative parameters evaluated was observed between G1 and G2 (p > 0.05). Also, no difference regarding the time for healing was observed between groups. Conclusions Diode laser seems to be as effective and safe as electrocautery when applied under similar conditions for IFH removal. Clinical relevance IFH corresponds to 65% of the lesions observed in denture wearers. This study shows that under similar conditions diode laser is as effective and safe as electrocautery for removal of IFH.

  • A Multiport Converter Interfacing Solar Photovoltaic Modules and Energy Storage with DC Microgrid

    摘要: A novel real-time optical fibre X-Ray dosimeter for monitoring the radiation pulses delivered from a clinical linear accelerator (Linac) is presented. The primary focus of the sensor is to measure low doses of ionising X-ray radiation in real time (limited to 0.1-ms gate time of the detector). The sensor tip material scintillates upon exposure to X-ray energy and the resultant low-level visible light signal is coupled to a polymethyl methacrylate plastic optical fibre, which is used to guide it towards a distal avalanche photodiode-based detector. The detector measures the low-level scintillating light from the sensor, thereby converting the ionizing radiation energy to a measurable signal with a time resolution of 0.1 ms. Results show that the scintillating optical fibre X-ray dosimeter is capable of capturing the individual X-Ray pulses delivered by the Linac during normal operation. Further examination of the results demonstrates that the sensor is capable of measuring dose rate and, hence, dose with a linearity (R2 = 0.9995 ? 0.9999) and in a highly repeatable manner for dose rates in the range 100 to 600 monitor units/min.
