  • Alignment of liquid crystals using Langmuir?Blodgett films of unsymmetrical bent-core liquid crystals

    摘要: The properties of the thin films of liquid crystal (LC) molecules can be governed easily by external fields. The anisotropic structure of the LC molecules has a large impact on the electrical and optical properties of the film. The Langmuir monolayer (LM) of LC molecules at the air–water interface is known to exhibit a variety of surface phases which can be transferred onto a solid substrate using the Langmuir?Blodgett (LB) technique. Here, we have studied the LM and LB films of asymmetrically substituted bent-core LC molecules. The morphology of LB film of the molecules is found to be a controlling parameter for aligning bulk LC in the nematic phase. It was found that the LB films of the bent-core molecules possessing defects favour the planar orientation of nematic LC, whereas the LB films with fewer defects show homeotropic alignment. The defect in LB films may introduce splay or bend distortions in the nematic near the alignment layer which can govern the planar alignment of the bulk LC. The uniform layer of LB film facilitates the molecules of nematic to anchor vertically due to a strong van der Waals interaction between the aliphatic chains leading to a homeotropic alignment.

  • Assembly structure and free energy change of a chromonic liquid crystal formed by a perylene dye

    摘要: The nematic (chromonic N) and isotropic phases formed by aqueous solutions of a perylene dye are investigated by x-ray diffraction and visible light absorption spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction shows that the molecules assemble into columns one molecule wide. The change in the visible absorption spectrum with concentration indicates that the molecules stack in a more or less isodesmic manner and that the free energy change associated with the addition or removal of a single molecule from a stack is 16–20 kBT. This range is appreciably higher than those of any previously-measured simple chromonic systems, i.e. those with single molecule-wide columns. It is suggested that the large free energy change promotes the formation of extremely long columns of molecules, and in turn leads to the low concentration at which mesophase formation takes place.

  • Non-radiation creation of complex centers in wide-gap oxide crystals

    摘要: It is shown that complex aggregate centers of oxygen divacancy type (F2 centers) and interstitial aluminum type near the anion vacancy (Ali+) are formed in anion-deficient crystals of corundum (α-Al2O3-δ) and beryllium oxide (BeO1-δ) under thermo-optical treatment (TOT). These centers are similar to those created in stoichiometric α-Al2O3 and BeO crystals under neutron irradiation. It is important to note that thermal stability of the TOT-created complex centers is higher than that of similar neutron-induced centers. It is also established that the probability of their formation is related to the temperature of the TOT, the wavelength of the stimulating light, and the initial anionic deficiency manifested as F+ and F centers (anion vacancies with one and two electrons, respectively).

  • 2D Photonic Crystal Nanodisk Array as Electron Transport Layer for Highly Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells

    摘要: Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are currently exhibiting reproducible high efficiency; the manufacturing of low cost, scalable electron transport layers (ETLs) is becoming increasingly important. However, this remains a challenge for electron transport layers that exhibit excellent optical/electrical properties while being a thin film of simple morphology. Here we demonstrate the PSC of a 2D photonic crystal nanodisk (ND) array ETL that is compact, but greatly enhances light harvesting. The ND array is fabricated by nanosphere lithography using a monolayer of self-assembled polymer spheres as a physical mask. We fabricate ND arrays of various lattice constants simply by controlling the size of the polymer spheres. Optimal ND arrays exhibit strong forward scattering and optical confinement effects, greatly improving light harvesting in the perovskite layer. We also observe that the ND array improves charge transport by reducing contact resistance with the perovskite layer. ND array ETL PSCs reach 19% maximum power conversion efficiency, with low photocurrent-voltage hysteresis and stable photocurrent output.

  • High dielectric polymer and its application on electro-optical Kerr effect of blue phase liquid crystal

    摘要: We present a high-dielectric polymer with a lateral ?uorine group, and its dielectric constant exhibits larger than 20 at 1 kHz. This well-soluble polymer can solely stabilize blue phase liquid crystals (BPLCs) while reducing the operating voltage by 30% and increasing the Kerr constant by nearly 70.6%. The in?uence of the polymer’s dielectric property on the operating voltage is investigated based on the potential distribution. The theoretical result predicts that the operation voltage can be further reduced by 50% when the dielectric constant of the chiral dopant is the same as the high-dielectric polymer. The potential application of high-dielectric materials for the improvement of BPLC devices is foreseeable.

  • Electro-Thermal Formation of Uniform Lying Helix Alignment in a Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Cell

    摘要: We demonstrated previously that the temperature of a sandwich-type liquid crystal cell with unignorable electrode resistivity could be electrically increased as a result of dielectric heating. In this study, we take advantage of such an electro-thermal effect and report on a unique electric-field approach to the formation of uniform lying helix (ULH) texture in a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) cell. The technique entails a hybrid voltage pulse at frequencies f1 and, subsequently, f2, which are higher and lower than the onset frequency for the induction of dielectric heating, respectively. When the cell is electrically sustained in the isotropic phase by the voltage pulse of V = 35 Vrms at f1 = 55 kHz or in the homeotropic state with the enhanced ionic effect at V = 30 Vrms and f1 = 55 kHz, our results indicate that switching of the voltage frequency from f1 to f2 enables the succeeding formation of well-aligned ULH during either the isotropic-to-CLC phase transition at f2 = 1 kHz or by the electrohydrodynamic effect at f2 = 30 Hz. For practical use, the aligning technique proposed for the first time in this study is more applicable than existing alternatives in that the obtained ULH is adoptable to CLCs with positive dielectric anisotropy in a simple cell geometry where complicated surface pretreatment is not required. Moreover, it is electrically switchable to other CLC textures such as Grandjean planar and focal conic states without the need of a temperature controller for the phase transition, the use of ion-rich LC materials, or mechanical shearing for textural transition.

  • Temperature-dependent phase transition in [001]-oriented 0.72Pb(MgNb)O-0.28PbTiO single crystals

    摘要: Temperature-dependent dielectricity and polarization of [001]C-oriented 0.72Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.28PbTiO3 relaxor-based ferroelectric single crystals were studied by using a combined method of the X-ray di?raction, dielectric spectrum, polarization-electric (P-E) ?eld hysteresis loops, and the Landau-phenomenological theory. Results show that the room-temperature rhombohedral phase experiences a rhombohedral-monoclinic-tetragonal coexisting state, then transforms to tetragonal phase, and ?nally to cubic phase during the zero-?eld-heating process. The six-order Landau-type thermal expansion parameters for the tetragonal phase were determined by using the typical characteristics at the cubic-tetragonal phase transition in the temperature range from 91 °C to 113 °C. The calculated dielectric curve, polarizations, and P-E loops ?t well with the experimental results. The phase stability and piezoelectricity are further studied and compared with those of the PMN-0.36PT single crystal. The provided methods and obtained Landau parameters can be used for further studies on the relaxor-based ferroelectric single crystals.

  • Effective synthesis of nanoscale anatase TiO <sub/>2</sub> single crystals using activated carbon template to enhance the photodegradation of crystal violet

    摘要: Nanoscale anatase TiO2 single crystals were successfully synthesized using three kinds of activated carbon (AC) templates through a simple sol–gel method. The optimal photocatalyst (T‐WOAC) was obtained using wood‐based AC template. X‐ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analyses revealed that T‐WOAC possessed a small crystallite size of 8.7 nm and a clear mesoporous structure. The photocatalytic properties of samples were then evaluated through photodegradation of crystal violet (CV). Results implied that the photocatalysts prepared using the AC templates exhibited superior photocatalytic activity to that of the original TiO2. This enhancement may be due to the small crystallite size, large specific surface area and pore volume of the catalysts prepared with ACs. T‐WOAC showed high photocatalytic activity, CV degradation of 99.01% after 120 min of irradiation and k = 0.03914 min?1, which is 3.9 times higher than that of the original TiO2 (k = 0.00994 min?1). This result can be mainly attributed to the application of WOAC with moderate specific surface area and pore volume to produce T‐WOAC. Alkaline conditions benefitted the photodegradation of CV over photocatalysts. This work proposes a possible degradation mechanism of CV and indicates that the fabricated photocatalysts can be used to effectively remove CV from aqueous solutions.

  • Direct laser writing of birefringent photonic crystals for the infrared spectral range

    摘要: Infrared optical photonic crystals fabricated using direct laser writing, which is based on the two-photon polymerization of suitable monomers, have received substantial interest since the emergence of this process. Two-photon polymerization could be a disruptive technology for the fabrication of all-dielectric photonic crystals in the infrared spectral range, as it allows the synthesis of large scale arrays of uniform structures with arbitrary geometries and arrangements. However, all-dielectric photonic crystals that provide birefringent optical responses in the infrared spectral range have not yet been demonstrated using direct laser writing techniques. Here, the authors explore the form birefringence observed in photonic crystals composed of arrays of subwavelength-sized slanted polymer microwires. The photonic crystals investigated here were fabricated in a single fabrication step using direct laser writing of an infrared transparent photoresist (IP-Dip). A strong contrast of the cross-polarized re?ectance of photonic crystals as a function of the in-plane orientation is observed in the mid-infrared spectral range at λ ≈ 6:5 μm. This observation is indicative of an anisotropic optical behavior. Finite element based techniques corroborate the experimentally observed responses qualitatively.

  • Correction: Boosted visible light photodegradation activity of boron doped rGO/g-C <sub/>3</sub> N <sub/>4</sub> nanocomposites: the role of C–O–C bonds

    摘要: A series of two-component co-crystals driven by I···N interactions based on the bipyridine (BIPY) chromophore with one among three different co-former building blocks, iodopentafluorobenzene (IPFB), 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (DITFB) and 1,3,5-trifluoro-2,4,6-triiodobenzene (IFB), were prepared and analysed via infrared spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. By comparing the I···N distances in the co-crystal structures, we found that the higher the –F ratio in the building blocks the closer the contact of the I···N bond, enhancing the intermolecular interactions in these co-crystals as well. That is, the positive electrostatic potential on the iodine atom(s) in the co-formers was enhanced by the presence of strong electron-withdrawing groups. The distinct spectroscopic behaviours (fluorescence and Raman spectra) among the two-component BIPY co-crystal systems in response to hydrostatic pressure were also investigated. Interestingly, the fluorescence of BIPY–DITFB presented intriguing abnormal evolution from dark to bright, suggesting a new charge transfer state due to the decreased intermolecular distance and the enhanced I···N interactions. Theoretical simulations by Materials Studio also showed the shortened I···N distance and the increased angle of C–I···N, evidencing the enhanced I···N interactions. In contrast, BIPY–IFB showed only slightly enhanced fluorescence intensity at 550 nm consistent with BIPY–DITFB. Once the pressure was relieved, both the Raman and fluorescence spectra for BIPY co-crystal systems entirely self-recovered. Remarkable emission enhancement in a solid-state co-crystal has been rarely reported in previous publications and in fact, this study paves a unique way for designing and developing novel stimuli-responsive photo-functional materials.
