  • Design, Characterization, and Test of a Versatile Single-Mode Power-Over-Fiber and Communication System for Seafloor Observatories

    摘要: A power-over-fiber (PoF) and communication system for extending a cabled seafloor observatory is demonstrated in this contribution. The system allows the cabled seafloor observatory to be linked, through a single optical fiber, to a sensor node located 8 km away. The PoF system is based on an optical architecture in which power and data propagate simultaneously on the same single-mode fiber. The Raman scattering effect is exploited to amplify the optical data signals and leads to the minimization of the sensor node power consumption. Versatile low power electronic interfaces have been developed to ensure compatibility with a wide range of marine sensors. A low-consumption field-programmable gate array and an energy-efficient microcontroller are used to develop the electronic interfaces. For an electrical input power of 31 W, up to 190 mW is recovered at the sensor node while a data bitrate of up to 3.6 Mb/s is achieved. The PoF system has been tested and validated for turbidity and acoustic measurement applications. The current study focuses on the electronic development and the validation of the PoF system.

  • Photodiodes embedded within electronic textiles

    摘要: A novel photodiode-embedded yarn has been presented and characterized for the first time, offering new possibilities for applications including monitoring body vital signs (including heart rate, blood oxygen and skin temperature) and environmental conditions (light, humidity and ultraviolet radiation). To create an E-Textile integrated with electronic devices that is comfortable, conformal, aesthetically pleasing and washable, electronic components are best integrated within the structure of a textile fabric in yarn form. The device is first encapsulated within a protective clear resin micro-pod before being covered in a fibrous sheath. The resin micro-pod and covering fibres have a significant effect on the nature of light received by the photoactive region of the device. This work characterised the effects of both encapsulating photodiodes within resin micro-pods and covering the micro-pod with a fibrous sheath on the opto-electronic parameters. A theoretical model is presented to provide an estimate for these effects and validated experimentally using two photodiode types and a range of different resin micro-pods. This knowledge may have wider applications to other devices with small-scale opto-electronic components. Wash tests confirmed that the yarns could survive multiple machine wash and drying cycles without deterioration in performance.

    摘要: We present in this paper an image processing technique called Circular Distortion and Motion Compensation (CDMC) that can perform real-time retinal processing with geometric compensation for the ring structure arraignment in the retina for bipolar and ganglion cells. The system was running on an embedded platform of Raspberry Pi 3 and managed to achieve a respectable 12 frames per second on a 640×480 resolution live video capture from a webcam. The system emulates biological processes occurring in the retina such as motion estimation and temporal filtering while compensating for the radial shift of ganglion and bipolar cells in human retina. The proposed algorithm is efficient enough to run on mobile hardware with battery powered device in real-time and it is ideal for high resolution optogenetic stimulation devices that targets the retina.

  • Morphology Effect on SERS Activity of Embedded Silver Nanostructures

    摘要: Embedded silver nanostructures with different shapes and sizes are grown in Si substrates by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method. Systematic study of their surface-enhanced Raman properties is performed. Influence of shape, size, and coverage of the nanoparticles on the average enhancement factors is calculated with the help of standard analyte molecules viz. crystal violet and Rhodamine 6G to optimize the substrates for future sensing applications.

  • Acoustic perfect absorbers via spiral metasurfaces with embedded apertures

    摘要: In this work, we analytically and experimentally present perfect acoustic absorbers via spiral metasurfaces composed of coiled channels and embedded apertures. Perfect absorption (reaching 0.999 in experiments) is realized with an ultra-thin thickness down to (cid:2)1/100th of the operating wavelength. Owing to the superior impedance manipulation provided by the embedded apertures, perfect absorption with tunable frequencies is demonstrated. Our results would contribute to paving a way towards designing thin and light absorbers for the low frequency absorption challenge.

  • Single-Step CMOS Compatible Fabrication of High Aspect Ratio Microchannels Embedded in Silicon

    摘要: This paper presents a new method for the CMOS compatible fabrication of microchannels integrated into a silicon substrate. In a single-step DRIE process (Deep Reactive Ion Etching) a network of microchannels with High Aspect Ratio (HAR) up to 10, can be etched in a silicon substrate through a mesh mask. In the same single etching step, multidimensional microchannels with various dimensions (width, length, and depth) can be obtained by tuning the process and design parameters. These fully embedded structures enable further wafer processing and integration of electronic components like sensors and actuators in wafers with microchannels.

  • Identification of Design Considerations for Small Satellite Remote Sensing Systems in Low Earth Orbit

    摘要: The Sergio Arboleda University is preparing its next satellite mission, named Libertad 2. It will carry out a system of image acquisition as a working tool for researches based on the obtained data. Complete methodologies are often used in the development of satellite missions for planning, execution and deployment, for example, the standards of the European Cooperation for Space Standardization; these methodologies, however, do not include technical specifications or requirements for the development of nano-satellites nor for their subsystems. For this reason, this article focuses on the identification of the characteristics, requirements and restrictions, which must be considered in the design of a remote sensing system for satellites under the CubeSat standard, in order to serve as a starting point for the development of the main payload of the Libertad 2 mission.

  • Low-High-Power Consumption Architectures for Deep-Learning Models Applied to Hyperspectral Image Classification

    摘要: Convolutional neural networks have emerged as an excellent tool for remotely sensed hyperspectral image (HSI) classification. Nonetheless, the high computational complexity and energy requirements of these models typically limit their application in on-board remote sensing scenarios. In this context, low-power consumption architectures are promising platforms that may provide acceptable on-board computing capabilities to achieve satisfactory classification results with reduced energy demand. For instance, the new NVIDIA Jetson Tegra TX2 device is an efficient solution for on-board processing applications using deep-learning (DL) approaches. So far, very few efforts have been devoted to exploiting this or other similar computing platforms in on-board remote sensing procedures. This letter explores the use of low-power consumption architectures and DL algorithms for HSI classification. The conducted experimental study reveals that the NVIDIA Jetson Tegra TX2 device offers a good choice in terms of performance, cost, and energy consumption for on-board HSI classification tasks.

  • Quasi-Static Surface-PEEC Modeling of Electromagnetic Problem With Finite Dielectrics

    摘要: This paper presents a quasi-static surface-based partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC) model for electromagnetic problems consisting of coupled conductors and heterogeneous dielectrics of finite size. The PEEC model is based on the surface equivalent principle. Unlike the traditional surface-based PEEC models, in which the integral equations are set up by enforcing the field continuity in the true field region, the homogeneous integral equations in this model are obtained by enforcing the tangential null field condition in the null field regions. Simplified integral equations are obtained under the quasi-static assumption, in which the circuit elements carrying electric currents and magnetic charges on the dielectric surfaces are vanished. Consequently, the size of the subcircuit describing dielectrics is reduced significantly compared to the full-wave surface-PEEC (S-PEEC) model. Since the quasi-static S-PEEC model only contains frequency-independent circuit elements, it can be conveniently used for time-domain simulation. Three numerical examples are presented to validate the new PEEC model for typical embedded RF passive components, packaging and interconnection problems in both the frequency domain and the time domain. Excellent agreement is observed between the results of the proposed PEEC model, S-PEEC model, and those of commercial software within the quasi-static frequency range.
