  • Bandgap engineering of cobalt-doped bismuth ferrite nanoparticles for photovoltaic applications

    摘要: The bandgap energy range of multiferroic bismuth ferrite is 2.2–2.7 eV, making it a promising candidate for photovoltaic (PV) applications. But its ef?ciency is still very low (<2%). This report thus focusses on the application of bismuth ferrite (BFO) engineered with cobalt (Co) doping and on the tuning of its bandgap energy (Eg). BiFeO3 is a unique multiferroic material that simultaneously displays both ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties at room temperature. Co doped with pure BiFeO3 (BiFe(1?x)Cox O3; x = 0, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.15) was synthesized by the sol–gel method and annealed at 600?C. X-ray diffraction shows the well-arranged crystalline structure and peaks of pure and doped-BiFeO3 nanoparticles. A suitable reduction of Eg has been observed for Co-doped BiFeO3, which may be appropriate for the effective use in PV solar cells. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry were used to investigate the thermal decomposition character of the xerogel powder and the pattern of pure and doped BiFeO3 phases. Field emission scanning electron microscopy images show the surface crystallography of pure and Co-doped BiFeO3. Co-doped BiFeO3 has considerably reduced the crystallite and particle size of the samples. We have calculated the Eg of pure and doped BiFeO3 using a UV–Vis–NIR spectrophotometer and the results show the important reduction of Eg (1.60 eV) of the Co-doped samples, which may have potential applications in PV solar cells.

  • A Radio-Fluorogenic Polymer-Gel Makes Fixed Fluorescent Images of Complex Radiation Fields

    摘要: We review the development and application of an organic polymer-gel capable of producing fixed, three-dimensional fluorescent images of complex radiation fields. The gel consists for more than 99% of γ-ray-polymerized (~15% conversion) tertiary-butyl acrylate (TBA) containing ~100 ppm of a fluorogenic compound, e.g., maleimido-pyrene (MPy). The radio-fluorogenic effect depends on copolymerization of the MPy into growing chains of TBA on radiation-induced polymerization. This converts the maleimido residue, which quenches the pyrene fluorescence, into a succinimido moiety (SPy), which does not. The intensity of the fluorescence is proportional to the yield of free-radicals formed and hence to the local dose deposited. Because the SPy moieties are built into the polymer network, the image is fixed. The method of preparing the gel and imaging the radiation-induced fluorescence are presented and discussed. The effect is illustrated with fluorescent images of the energy deposited in the gel by beams of X-rays, electrons, and protons as well as a radioactive isotope.

  • A Novel Phytantriol-Based Lyotropic Liquid Crystalline Gel for Efficient Ophthalmic Delivery of Pilocarpine Nitrate

    摘要: The purpose of this paper was to investigate the potential of liquid crystalline (LC) gels for ophthalmic delivery, so as to enhance the bioavailability of pilocarpine nitrate (PN). The gels were prepared by a vortex method using phytantriol and water (in the ratio of 73:27 w/w). Their inner structures were con?rmed by crossed polarized light microscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, attenuated total re?ectance-Fourier transform infrared spectrum, and rheology. The in vitro release studies revealed that PN could keep sustained release from the gels over a period of 12 h. The ex vivo apparent permeability coef?cient of the gels demonstrated a 3.83-folds (P < 0.05) increase compared with that of eye drops. The corneal hydration levels of the gel maintained in the normal range of 79.46 ± 2.82%, hinting that the gel could be considered non-damaging and safe to the eyes. Furthermore, in vivo residence time evaluation suggested that a better retention performance of LC gel was observed in rabbit’s eyes compared to eye drops. In vivo ocular irritation study indicated that LC gel was nonirritant and might be suitable for various eye applications. In conclusion, LC gels might represent a potential ophthalmic delivery strategy to overcome the limitations of eye drops.

  • Preparation of Rod-like Aluminum Doped Zinc Oxide Powders by Sol-gel Technique Using Metal Chlorides and Acetylacetone Precursors

    摘要: Al-doped ZnO (AZO) powders were prepared by using metal chloride precursors and the sol-gel technique. IR peaks observed at 1590 cm-1 and 1620 cm-1 indicated the formation of metal chelate as a consequence of the addition of acetylacetone to the metal chloride solution. TG-DSC analysis of the AZO gels confirmed the formation of metal chelate as evidenced by the development of several weight loss peaks accompanied by the introduction of new endothermic peaks. The resulting AZO gels were annealed at 500, 600, and 800 ℃ to study the effect of annealing temperature. XRD and SEM results showed that crystallization of AZO gels takes place around 600 ℃. Hexagonal wurtzite structure was identified as the main phase for all the samples. In addition, small shift of the XRD (002) peak coupled with XPS results from the AZO powders confirmed the successful doping of the ZnO powders. Micron sized rod-like AZO powders were uniform in dimension and morphology and remained stable even at 800 ℃.

  • The study of Fe-doped CdS nanoparticle-assisted photocatalytic degradation of organic dye in wastewater

    摘要: Size-tunable nanoparticles (NPs) for pristine cadmium sulfide (CdS) and iron (Fe)-doped (5, 10 and 15%) CdS were synthesized using facile chemical co-precipitation. Size-controlled NPs were prepared with thioglycolic acid (TGA) as the capping agent and their structural, optical, morphological and physiochemical evaluations were performed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV–visible spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR). XRD revealed single cubic phase of CdS and later broader peaks upon mixing of Fe, and intensive absorption was recorded in the visible regime upon doping with redshift. FESEM confirmed spherical nanoparticles of Fe–CdS, and Cd–S linkage along with other functional groups was recognized by FTIR. Cd1?xFexS (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10 and 0.15) powder was used as the photocatalyst for methylene blue (MB) degradation in visible light and catalyst in NaBH4’s presence. The control CdS bleached MB faster than doped but doped CdS showed higher catalytic degradation. The Fe-doped CdS NPs showed superior catalytic potential compared to undoped CdS which suggests their use in dye industries, especially leather and tanneries. Additionally, NPs not only show superior catalytic characteristics but also help in cost reduction and complete removal of dyes for wastewater management.

  • Photocatalytic degradation of phenol by LaFeO3 nanocrystalline synthesized by gel combustion method via citric acid route

    摘要: Focusing on the photocatalytic degradation of phenol under visible light, the synthesized lanthanum orthoferrites (LaFeO3) by gel combustion method using citric acid as sacrificial agent were investigated. With the highest reaction temperature of 200 °C, the physicochemical properties of synthesized samples were characterized by X-Ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, Brunauer–Emmet–Teller (BET), and Energy Dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy (EDS). On the other hand, UV–Vis spectroscopy analysis was carried out to determine the phenol photodegradation activities and mechanism. The results suggested the well-defined LaFeO3 nanocrystals with specific area of 28 m2 g?1 were successfully synthesized. Besides that, variations in operating parameters such as pH, catalyst dosage and initial concentration of phenol in synthetic wastewater were also examined. In conclusion, LaFeO3 nanocrystalline exhibited an exceptional photocatalytic activity for phenol degradation, thus providing a perfect alternative for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.

  • Spectroscopic Ellipsometry of fluid and gel phase Lipid Bilayers in hydrated conditions

    摘要: The biological membranes play a crucial role in the various biological processes due to their characteristic physical properties. The parameters such as membrane composition, thickness undulations, and the influence of external stimuli play a crucial role in the phase state behavior of biological membranes. The supported lipid bilayer (SLBs) systems closely represent cell membranes and are often studied to understand their behavior. In the current study, we have implemented spectroscopic Ellipsometry (SE) technique to explore the optical properties of various single component lipid bilayers having different phase state (fluid and gel) under hydrated or native conditions. The measurement of ellipsometric angles ψ and Δ were obtained from SE and were utilized to realize an explicit phase state dependence. Further, we obtained the thickness (t) and refractive index (n) by modeling of these SE results. These results were found to be inter-related to the phase state and lateral organization. The bilayer thickness is further verified against values obtained from coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. The proposed method was tested on various lipid bilayers under their native phase state at room temperature and was found to have a correlation with AFM measurements.

  • Characterization of atypical polyaniline nano-structures prepared via advanced techniques

    摘要: Conductive polymers had been the topic of a vast number of investigations during the last decades, so, the synthesis of conducting polymers and study of their physical properties has been of prime importance. One of these conductive polymers is polyaniline. The current work is to prepare polyaniline (PANI) nanostructured material via four different preparation techniques which were sol-gel, rapid mixing, sonochemical and supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2) assisted polymerization. The morphology of the prepared PANI samples was determined using Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The molecular structure of prepared PANI samples was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The electrical conductivity of the synthesized samples was assessed by using the four-probe method at room temperature. The surface area of the prepared samples was determined using Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET). The characterization results of the prepared PANI con?rm that the morphology, chemical composition, crystallinity, conductivity and surface area were altered signi?cantly as a consequence of its synthesis via atypical techniques.

  • Dose distribution verification in high-dose-rate brachytherapy using a highly sensitive normoxic N-vinylpyrrolidone polymer gel dosimeter

    摘要: Rapid technological advances in high-dose-rate brachytherapy have led to a requirement for greater accuracy in treatment planning system calculations and in the verification of dose distributions. In high-dose-rate brachytherapy, it is important to measure the dose distribution in the low-dose region at a position away from the source in addition to the high-dose range in the proximity of the source. The aim of this study was to investigate the accuracy of a treatment plan designed for prostate cancer in the low-dose range using a normoxic N-vinylpyrrolidone-based polymer gel (VIPET gel) dosimeter containing inorganic salt as a sensitizer (iVIPET). The dose response was evaluated on the basis of the transverse relaxation rate (R2) measured by magnetic resonance scanning. In the verification of the treatment plan, gamma analysis showed that the dose distributions obtained from the polymer gel dosimeter were in good agreement with those calculated by the treatment planning system. The gamma passing rate according to the 2%/2 mm criterion was 97.9%. The iVIPET gel dosimeter provided better accuracy for low doses than the normal VIPET gel dosimeter, demonstrating the potential to be a useful tool for quality assurance of the dose distribution delivered by high-dose-rate brachytherapy.

  • Double-function SiO2-DMS coating with antireflection and superhydrophobic surface

    摘要: A double-function SiO2 coating with antireflection and superhydrophobic properties was fabricated through a cost-effective and time-efficient sol-gel method. Tetraethoxysilane was used as a precursor to obtain SiO2 with an antireflection property. Hexamethyldisilazane was used as a modifier to produce SiO2-DMS with a superhydrophobic behaviour. The SiO2-DMS coating had a water contact angle of 153° and a water slide angle of <10°. The optimised SiO2-DMS coating had an average transmittance of 96.07% at a wavelength of 300-800 nm. The entire process could be completed in a short time.
