  • AlN-based hybrid thin films with self-assembled plasmonic Au and Ag nanoinclusions

    摘要: Aluminum nitride (AlN)-based two-phase nanocomposite thin films with plasmonic Au and Ag nanoinclusions have been demonstrated using a one-step thin film growth method. Such AlN-based nanocomposites, while maintaining their wide bandgap semiconductor behavior, present tunable optical properties such as bandgap, plasmonic resonance, and complex dielectric function. Depending on the growth atmosphere, the metallic nanoinclusions self-organized into different geometries, such as nano-dendrites, nano-disks, and nanoparticles, providing enhanced optical anisotropy in-plane and out-of-plane. The infrared transmission measurements demonstrate the signature peaks of AlN as well as a broad transmission window attributed to the plasmonic nanoinclusions. This unique AlN-metal hybrid thin film platform provides a route to modulate the optical response of wide bandgap III-V nitride semiconductors towards infrared sensing or all optical based integrated circuits.

  • Preparation of Bi<sub>2</sub>Gd<sub>1</sub>Fe<sub>5</sub>O<sub>12</sub> magnetic garnet films showing Faraday rotation of 36.3 deg./μm on glass substrates by metal organic decomposition method

    摘要: We fabricated the Bi2Gd1Fe5O12 thin films on glass substrates with the Gd3Fe5O12 buffer layer by the metal organic decomposition (MOD) method. We found an optimum thickness of the Gd3Fe5O12 buffer layer and annealing temperature for crystallization giving the maximum Faraday rotation. The optimum sample showed Faraday rotation of as high as 36.3 deg./μm at the wavelength λ = 500 nm, which is 23 times larger than the sample without the Gd3Fe5O12 buffer layer, and as high as 90.1% of the single crystalline Bi2Gd1Fe5O12 thin films on an (111) SGGG single crystal substrate. These results are promising for applications in optical waveguide isolators and magneto-optic spatial light modulators.

  • Toward <i>Special-Relativity-on-a-Chip</i> : analogue of Einstein velocity addition using optical add-drop filter (OADF)

    摘要: We present an optical analogue of a central concept (not a specific relativistic effect) in Special Relativity (SR) that underlies many relativistic effects. This concept is the Einstein Velocity Addition (EVA) which plays a fundamental role in the development of SR. The photonic circuit analogue is between the EVA, and the complex electric field, through the output signal of the optical add-drop filter (OADF). The OADF is one of the key building blocks for wavelength filtering in photonic integrated circuits (PICs or photonic chip). This analogue strengthens the vision toward a Special-Relativity-on-a-Chip. The analogy is established by equating the two relativistic normalized velocities in EVA with the two transmission coupling coefficients of the two directional couplers in the OADF. Furthermore, the generating angle in the EVA is associated with the single-pass phase shift of the OADF. We analyze its magnitude and directional angle in detail. Lastly, other important consequences are also briefly discussed.

  • A Switching Sequence for Unary Digital-to-Analog Converters Based on a Knight's Tour

    摘要: This paper proposes a new switching sequence with the asymmetric placement of weighting elements for a unary digital-to-analog converter (DAC). The proposed sequence is based on a so-called knight’s tour according to the modified Warnsdorf’s rule. To estimate the efficiency of the proposed switching sequence, a 10-bit resistive DAC has been designed and fabricated in the UMC 180-nm technology. Experimental results show that in comparison with an array of weighting elements without compensation of the systematic error, the proposed switching sequence reduces the maximal integral (INL) and the mean INL by 20% on the average in the temperature range from ?40 °C to 85 °C. Besides that, the maximal INL does not depend on the temperature, while the mean INL decreases with temperature increase.

  • Ultra-Low Noise Amplifier for X-Band SiGe BiCMOS Phased Array Applications

    摘要: This paper presents a low noise amplifier (LNA) with sub-1dB noise figure (NF) at X-Band. Different than generally known noise-and-power match technique, the presented LNA is designed by considering impedance between the base-collector terminals of an HBT in CE configuration. The presented amplifier stage can achieve sub-1dB NF performance with ~10 dB gain. The LNA dissipates 19.8 mW of dc power and has 0.77 dB NF while occupying 0.4 mm2. It succeeds 1.5 dBm of input-referred compression point. To the best of authors' knowledge, the presented work achieves the best NF performance in the literature of any LNA that utilizes SiGe technology.

    摘要: A large-scale timing synchronization scheme for scalable phased arrays is presented. This approach utilizes a DLL co-designed with a subsequent 2.5GHz PLL. The DLL employs a low noise, fine/coarse delay tuning to reduce the in-band rms jitter to 323fs, an order of magnitude improvement over previous works at similar frequencies. The DLL was fabricated in a 65nm bulk CMOS process and was characterized from 27MHz to 270MHz. It consumes up to 3.3mW from a 1V power supply and has a small footprint of 0.036mm2.

  • Design and analysis of multi-hexagonal reversible encoder using photonic crystals

    摘要: In this paper, a 4 × 2 reversible encoder with hexagonal lattice has been designed using two-dimensional photonic crystals with non-linear refractive index. In order to demonstrate the working of the encoder, we have used the multi-hexagonal shaped structure arranged in parallel with appropriate inclination to get the desired output. During its functionality as an encoder, more than 98% of the power is coupled at the output port to obtain logic 1 and less than 17.2% of the power is coupled for obtaining logic 0. In addition, during its functionality as a reversible encoder, the logic 1 and logic 0 correspond to 97.5% and 15.1%, respectively. The proposed encoder provides an improved contrast ratio of 12.18? dB and 11.5?dB for logical states of 01 and 10, respectively.

  • Polarization-independent hybrid plasmonic coupler based on T-shaped slot waveguide

    摘要: In this paper, a novel polarization-independent hybrid plasmonic coupler based on a T-shaped slot waveguide is proposed and investigated by numerical simulations using the finite element method. The structure supports both the TE-polarized slot waveguide mode and the TM-polarized plasmonic mode, offering a greater possibility to achieve the polarization-independent operation. The simulation results show that with proper structural parameters, the waveguide coupler with high extinction ratios of 31.2 dB (TE) and 30 dB (TM) and low insertion losses of 0.38 dB (TE) and 2.04 dB (TM) can be achieved at a telecommunication wavelength of 1550 nm. An investigation of the influence of structural perturbations indicates that the proposed coupler also has a good tolerance to fabrication errors. The proposed structure has potential applications in the field of subwavelength integrated photonic circuits.

  • High-selectivity bandpass filter using six pairs of quarter-wavelength coupled lines

    摘要: We present a 16-channel readout integrated circuit (ROIC) with nanosecond-resolution time to digital converter (TDC) for pixelated Cadmium Telluride (CdTe) gamma-ray detectors. The pixel array ROIC is the proof of concept of the pixel array readout ASIC for positron-emission tomography (PET) scanner, positron-emission mammography (PEM) scanner, and Compton gamma camera. The electronics of each individual pixel integrates an analog front-end with switchable gain, an analog to digital converter (ADC), configuration registers, and a 4-state digital controller. For every detected photon, the pixel electronics provides the energy deposited in the detector with 10-bit resolution, and a fast trigger signal for time stamp. The ASIC contains the 16-pixel matrix electronics, a digital controller, five global voltage references, a TDC, a temperature sensor, and a band-gap based current reference. The ASIC has been fabricated with TSMC m mixed-signal CMOS technology and occupies an area of mm. The TDC shows a resolution mm of 95.5 ps, a precision of 600 ps at full width half maximum W. In acquisition (FWHM), and a power consumption of mode, the total power consumption of every pixel is W. An equivalent noise charge (ENC) of at maximum gain and negative polarity conditions has been measured at room temperature.
