摘要: We demonstrate a deep-etched TE grating coupler on a high-confinement InP membrane platform. Results show these gratings feature a high fiber coupling efficiency of 75% at 1525 nm wavelength.

Hybrid Integrated Semiconductor Lasers with Silicon Nitride Feedback Circuits
摘要: Hybrid integrated semiconductor laser sources offering extremely narrow spectral linewidth, as well as compatibility for embedding into integrated photonic circuits, are of high importance for a wide range of applications. We present an overview on our recently developed hybrid-integrated diode lasers with feedback from low-loss silicon nitride (Si3N4 in SiO2) circuits, to provide sub-100-Hz-level intrinsic linewidths, up to 120 nm spectral coverage around a 1.55 μm wavelength, and an output power above 100 mW. We show dual-wavelength operation, dual-gain operation, laser frequency comb generation, and present work towards realizing a visible-light hybrid integrated diode laser.

Experimental Demonstration of Single Sideband Modulation Utilizing Monolithic Integrated Injection Locked DFB Laser
摘要: Single sideband (SSB) modulation based on a monolithic integrated optically injection-locked (MOIL) DFB laser is demonstrated experimentally. To our knowledge, this is the first time to realize SSB modulation utilizing a MOIL DFB laser. Tunable SSB signals with large lower-to-upper sideband power ratios are achieved by changing the bias currents of the MOIL DFB laser. The largest lower-to-upper sideband power ratio is measured to be 24.4 dB, which is very useful for improving the transmission performance of a radio-over-fiber link. Due to the generated SSB modulation, the fiber transmission response is flattened significantly and a signal of 25 GHz is transmitted through 85-km fiber without being affected by the fiber chromatic dispersion. 20 MSymbol/s 32-QAM signals with subcarriers of 21 GHz, 23 GHz and 25 GHz are also transmitted by the proposed SSB modulation link, and both the error vector magnitude (EVM) and the bit error rate (BER) of the link are improved distinctly. The proposed method can effectively suppress the fiber chromatic dispersion.

Double integrated laser-thyristor
摘要: Comparative experiments are performed on a semiconductor laser with different numbers (one or two) of emitting sections monolithically integrated with an electronic switch (thyristor). It is shown that the functional integration of a laser with a thyristor in one heterostructure makes it possible to achieve efficient operation of the laser in a pulsed regime (up to 50 W), while the use of vertical integration of two laser sections in this device additionally increases the optical output power to 90 W with all other conditions being the same.

Clustering and dispatching hydro, wind, and photovoltaic power resources with multiobjective optimization of power generation fluctuations: A case study in southwestern China
摘要: Hydropower can be used to smooth out the output fluctuations from power systems including wind and solar sources. This paper proposes a double-layer model for coordinating the operations of cascaded hydropower and neighboring wind and photovoltaic (PV) facilities. In a local complementary model, hydropower with less regulating ability (local complementary hydropower, LCH) is dispatched to alleviate short-term fluctuations (i.e., hourly variations), whereas in the global one, hydropower with greater regulating capacity (global complementary hydropower, GCH) is operated to alleviate long-term fluctuations (i.e., intraday peak-valley differences). The results of a case study of a hydro-wind-PV cluster project in southwestern China show that most (90%) short-term fluctuations can be smoothed by LCH with a minimum impact on the capacity factor (-0.02). In contrast, alleviation of long-term fluctuations can be achieved with GCH, but this causes a large capacity factor reduction (-0.25). The discharge fluctuation of GCH is notably lower (70~75%) than that of LCH. In this system (which includes 5,200 MW wind and 1,400 MW PV), the output fluctuations can be eliminated if hydropower capacity reaches 2,200 MW. These findings demonstrate that clustering of hydropower cascades with wind and solar generation facilities is a promising avenue for the decarbonization of electricity systems.

摘要: This paper proposes a statistical approach for section-based fault location in medium voltage (MV) grids with underground cables, using Bayesian inference. The proposed approach considers several important uncertainties in the MV grid, including measurement errors, fault breakdown resistance, and the inaccuracies of zero-sequence parameters. The approach first obtains the prior distribution of the fault position from the component failure database, the readings of the transmitted fault indicators, and the relevant digging activity record. With the estimated prefault grid status and the measured transient voltages/currents, the posterior distribution is then calculated based on Bayes’ theorem. To solve the problem numerically, the Monte Carlo integration is applied and a two-step calculation procedure is proposed. Simulations are performed on a typical European MV feeder to demonstrate the feasibility of the approach. The distribution grid operators can use the calculated posterior distribution to rank the possible faulted sections and to facilitate the restoration process, which can reduce the interruption duration of power supply.

摘要: Powering cellular base stations with renewable energy are one of the long-term strategies for achieving green networks and reducing their operational costs. As an energy provider, the power grid is evolving into a smarter one, which allows more energy-efficient cellular networks and enables cooperation and interaction with the smart grid. On one hand, cellular networks can use harvested renewable energy and on-site energy storage to reduce their energy costs. On the other hand, the price of electricity depends on the energy load, which will eventually contribute to decreasing the peak consumption and global energy cost. In this paper, we propose new integration architecture for renewable energy-powered cellular networks and the smart grid. The proposed architecture is designed based on the classification and the analysis of the existing proposals and the requirements of the smart grid, renewable energy systems, and cellular networks.

摘要: The Offshore Simulator Centre AS (OSC) is the world's most advanced provider of simulators for demanding offshore operations. However, even though the OSC provides very powerful simulation tools, it is mainly designed for training purposes and it does not inherently offer any flexible methods concerning the control methodology. In fact, each crane model is controlled with a dedicated control algorithm that cannot be modified, accessed, or replaced at runtime. As a result, it is not possible to dynamically switch between different control methods, nor is it possible to easily investigate alternative control approaches. To overcome these problems, a flexible and general control system architecture that allows for modeling flexible control algorithms of maritime cranes and more generally, robotic arms, was previously presented by our research group. However, in the previous work, a generic game engine was used to visualize the different models. In this work, the flexible and general control system architecture is integrated with a crane simulator developed by the OSC taking full advantage of the provided domain-consistent simulation tools. The Google Protocol Buffers protocol is adopted to realize the communication protocol. This integration establishes the base for the research of alternative control algorithms, which can be efficiently tested in a realistic maritime simulation environment. As a validating case study, an alternative control method based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) is also presented. Related simulations are carried out to validate the efficiency of the proposed integration.

Lapping and Polishing of Crystalline KY(WO4)2: Toward High Refractive Index Contrast Slab Waveguides
摘要: Rare-earth ion-doped potassium yttrium double tungstate, RE:KY(WO4)2, is a promising candidate for small, power-efficient, on-chip lasers and amplifiers. Thin KY(WO4)2-on-glass layers with thicknesses ranging between 0.9 and 1.6 μm are required to realize on-chip lasers based on high refractive index contrast waveguides operating between 1.55 and 3.00 μm. The crystalline nature of KY(WO4)2 makes the growth of thin, defect-free layers on amorphous glass substrates impossible. Heterogeneous integration is one of the promising approaches to achieve thin KY(WO4)2-on-glass layers. In this process, crystal samples, with a thickness of 1 mm, are bonded onto a glass substrate and thinned down with an extensive lapping and polishing procedure to the desired final thickness. In this study, a lapping and polishing process for KY(WO4)2 was developed toward the realization of integrated active optical devices in this material.
