  • Enabling low voltage losses and high photocurrent in fullerene-free organic photovoltaics

    摘要: Despite significant development recently, improving the power conversion efficiency of organic photovoltaics (OPVs) is still an ongoing challenge to overcome. One of the prerequisites to achieving this goal is to enable efficient charge separation and small voltage losses at the same time. In this work, a facile synthetic strategy is reported, where optoelectronic properties are delicately tuned by the introduction of electron-deficient-core-based fused structure into non-fullerene acceptors. Both devices exhibited a low voltage loss of 0.57 V and high short-circuit current density of 22.0 mA cm?2, resulting in high power conversion efficiencies of over 13.4%. These unconventional electron-deficient-core-based non-fullerene acceptors with near-infrared absorption lead to low non-radiative recombination losses in the resulting organic photovoltaics, contributing to a certified high power conversion efficiency of 12.6%.

  • Mastering Lateral Radiation Losses in Tunable VCSELs

    摘要: This paper deals with the loss mechanisms in tunable vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs). The strong increase of the threshold gain at the tuning range edges motivates the investigation of the degradation mechanisms presented in this paper. A campaign of simulations performed with our in-house VCSEL ELectroMagnetic (VELM) simulation code, combined with a novel approach based on the study of the Poynting vector, allowed to identify significant lateral radiation losses. The proposal of technology-affordable countermeasures rests on the proper understanding of these phenomena.

  • Application of Titanium Dioxide Self-Cleaning Coatings on Photovoltaic Modules for Soiling Related Losses Reduction

    摘要: Several studies have assessed the influence of soiling deposition on Photovoltaic (PV) modules front-cover with regards to performance losses over time. In fact, soiling phenomena in PV systems are ascribed as responsible for medium and long-term yield reduction up to 16% over the first-year of outdoor exposure. Provided that PV technology is a low yield energy production source, maintaining module initial power output declared values is of the outmost importance to ensure that the return time of investment matches project calculations. The scope of this work was a detailed investigation on self-cleaning coating application as a viable retrofit option on already installed modules, or on newly built PV systems, to avoid soiling build-up on front-covers and guarantee threshold performance level in time. The aim is to provide system designers with a consistent alternative to manual cleaning, without losing effectiveness in terms of yield maintenance. The use of self-cleaning coating instead of acting on panels on a regular basis is more convenient in terms of operation and cost. These issues were analyzed through a set of experiments performed both on commercial size modules and laboratory assembled samples. Results prove product compatibility with PV components and its effectiveness in preventing soiling and dust deposition. Outcomes are presented in terms of maximum power output (Pmax) variation according to measurements performed in Standard Test Conditions (STC) at different time steps. In addition, a parallel comparison with uncoated modules exposed to the same outdoor conditions is also proposed to allow for Pmax variation monitoring performed on a reference sample.

  • Quantifying Photocurrent Loss of a Single Particle–Particle Interface in Nanostructured Photoelectrodes

    摘要: Particle?particle interfaces are ubiquitous in nanostructured photoelectrodes and photovoltaics, which are important devices for solar energy conversion. These interfaces are expected to cause performance losses in these devices, but how much loss they would incur is poorly defined. Here we use a subparticle photoelectrochemical microscopy approach in combination with specific photocurrent measurement electrode configurations to quantify the current losses from single particle?particle interfaces formed between individual TiO2 nanorods operating as photoanodes in aqueous electrolytes. We find that a single interface leads to ~20% photocurrent loss (i.e., ~80% retention of the original current). Such quantitative, first-of-its-kind, information provides a metric for guiding the optimization and design of nanostructured photoelectrodes and photovoltaics.

  • Application of Karpman-Maslov-Solov’ev soliton perturbation theory to systems with distributed gain or losses

    摘要: We analyze the most important ideas of the Karpman-Maslov-Solov’ev soliton perturbation theory, and based on it, we solve analytically the long-standing problem of the Schr?dinger soliton interactions in the systems with distributed losses or gain. Our analytical results do give a quite good qualitative and quantitative check of the numerical results known so far. Unexpected and nontrivial result consists in the fact that the relative soliton separation depends on the accumulated (integrated) losses or gain.

  • Simulation-Based Sensitivity Analysis of Conduction and Switching Losses for Silicon Carbide Power MOSFETs

    摘要: The behavior of silicon carbide power MOSFETs is analyzed using TCAD device simulations with respect to conduction and switching losses. Device designs with varying breakdown voltages are simulated. The contributions to the on-state resistance are shown at room and elevated temperature. Whereas channel and substrate resistance dominate at low breakdown voltages, drift and JFET resistance dominate at high breakdown voltages. With increasing temperature, the channel resistance decreases and thus the drift resistance is the main contributor already at medium breakdown voltages. Manufacturing processes of a device can have a high influence on its losses. Variations in interface mobility, drift doping, and p-body doping can lead to a significant change of on-resistance, internal capacitances, and reverse recovery charge. For higher voltage classes the drift layer properties should be of major interest as it influences on-resistance and reverse recovery charge.

  • Analysis and Test Efficiency of a High-Power Pulsed Power Supply Based on HIA

    摘要: The high-power pulsed power supply based on homopolar inductor alternator (HIA) was successfully used as a primary power supply of the pulse load. This type of power supply has the advantages of high-power density and high reliability. The efficiency of this power supply is an important parameter in the design of this power supply. This paper presents the analysis and test efficiency of it. The theoretical calculation is consistent with the test, and the results show that the efficiency is 75%–80%; the armature copper losses account for the largest proportion of total losses, and the iron losses take the second proportion. The large armature copper losses are due to the extremely serious skin and squeezing effects. The analysis and test results are benefit for estimating the required inertial energy storage. Finally, the design aspects about the losses of pulsed HIA are discussed, and it is helpful for the optimal design of a high-efficiency pulsed HIA for capacitor charge power supply.

    摘要: Solar distributed generation (DG) integrated into the distribution system has contributed significant effects such as reduced power losses and improved voltage profile. The reliability and power quality of the technology may be affected at high penetration that may result to high voltage fluctuations and reverse power flow. Thus, the maximum allowable penetration level of solar DG must be determined. By using genetic algorithm as an approach, this study determines the penetration limit of solar DG in the network considering multiple bus integration. Simulations were implemented in IEEE 37-bus test system utilizing the Component Object Model (COM) interface of MATLAB and OpenDSS. Results showed that considering the penetration limit of solar DG resulted to significant improvements in power losses and voltage profile. Moreover, the maximum allowable limit of the DG installed to 18 different buses showed the highest reduction of power losses and the lowest average total voltage deviation.

    摘要: With the increasing penetration of both grid connected and standalone photovoltaic (PV) systems in Pakistan to cater the shortfall of energy, it is necessary to determine the performance and durability of already installed PV systems in different climates of country. This work aims to analyze the performance of first grid connected PV power plant located in Islamabad, Pakistan. The performance degradation of PV plants primarily depends on PV modules type (technology and design), regional climatic factors and field operating conditions. In this paper, performance ratio (PR) and degradation rate have been calculated from meteorological and performance data of plant to investigate the energy efficiency and modules quality over the course of operational years. Temperature losses due to module operating temperature were also estimated that primarily contribute to overall energy losses. This evaluation is of paramount importance for estimating the cost effect of the performance, identification of the underlying performance degradation and energy losses mechanisms, that help investors to choose climate specific modules technology and design for future plants and also to make efficient scheduling for preventive maintenance.

  • Coupling of Characteristic Modes on PEC and Lossy Dielectric Structures

    摘要: Surface integral equation based theory of characteristic modes (TCM) is presented for structures including perfect electric conductors (PEC) and lossy dielectric bodies. The formulation is a combination of the classical TCM formulation for PEC structures and a recently developed one for penetrable bodies. The potential of the methodology for practical antenna design problems is demonstrated by studying coupling of the modes on a PEC plate (antenna ground plane) and an adjacent highly lossy dielectric block (user’s hand). This analysis reveals existence of different types of modes having weak or strong interactions between the PEC and dielectric parts.
