    摘要: A smart monitoring system based on fiber-optic interferometers using multi-core fiber (MCF) is presented in this paper. Interference among cores in the seven-core fiber (SCF) was introduced by using multi-mode fiber (MMF) coupling and experimental setup was designed to collect the data of user on bed for processing. With optimized algorithm, three body activities, including on the bed, off the bed and body movement, can be identified successfully. For further processing on collected data, respiration of the user can also be obtained. The smart monitor is contactless and non-invasive which is user-friendly and secure.

  • Routing, spectrum and core assignment algorithms for protection of space division multiplexing elastic optical networks

    摘要: Protection is a key issue in optical networks, mainly in spacial division multiplexing (SDM) elastic optical networks (EONs) as these handle the increasing amount of heterogeneous Internet traffic. In this paper, we address protection in SDM-EONs including inter-core crosstalk. We introduce three algorithms, designed to provide 100% protection from single failures. Extensive simulation is used to show that the proposed algorithms prevents the formation of network bottlenecks, thus maintaining the protection of the connections.

  • Experimental and analytical investigation of LP01-LP11 mode interference

    摘要: We introduce an analytical theory of LP01-LP11 mode interference and investigate its application in curvature measurement. Under the weakly guiding condition, an analytical formulation for predicting dip wavelength in the transmission spectrum is proposed. The applicability of the proposed formulation is further explored in terms of curvature measurement based on a few-mode multi-core fiber (FM-MCF). The mechanism of curvature response is analytically presented and verified through numerical simulation and experiments. The comparison of analytical and numerical results is found to be in good agreement when curvature varies from 0 to 1.8 m?1. Meanwhile, a good agreement between the experimental and theoretical values of dip wavelength shift is also observed. Moreover, we find that the temperature effect can be eliminated by using two cores of the FM-MCF during curvature measurement. Through experimental tests, the curvature values are accurately predicted under varying temperatures with maximum error controlled within 6.6%.

  • Three-Dimensional Resource Allocation in Space Division Multiplexing Elastic Optical Networks

    摘要: In this paper, we present a comprehensive model to address three-dimensional resource assignment (3D-RA) in space division multiplexing elastic optical networks using few-mode multi-core fibers (FM-MCFs). Accordingly, we present new 3D-RA algorithms in which the consequential resources include the spectrum, modes, and cores. We consider all spectral and spatial diversity types in FM-MCFs and introduce five 3D-RA scenarios including (i) single-mode and single-core (SMSC), (ii) single-mode and multi-core (SMMC), (iii) multi-mode and single-core (MMSC), (iv) multi-mode and multi-core (MMMC), and finally, (v) hybrid 3D-RA. In each scenario, the fractional joint (FrJ-) and independent (Ind-) switching (Sw) schemes are introduced and explored for the proposed scenarios. By using the FrJ- and Ind-Sw schemes, we performed the simulation process for the above-mentioned scenarios. The simulation results confirm the efficiency of the proposed 3D-RA algorithms. Furthermore, various 3D-RA scenarios are comprehensively compared using the obtained results in terms of vital metrics introduced in this work. It is also indicated that the SMSC and MMSC scenarios present superior performance for Ind-Sw and FrJ-Sw 3D-RA scenarios, respectively, in comparison to other proposed non-hybrid scenarios. The obtained results also reveal that the quad-hybrid 3D-RA scenario results in the lowest blocking probability in comparison with all other introduced scenarios in both switching schemes. These results recommend an efficient simulation system for compatible transceivers for Ind- and FrJ-Sw schemes.

  • A review on coupled and uncoupled multicore fibers for future ultra-high capacity optical communication

    摘要: This paper reviews the characteristics of coupled and uncoupled multicore fibers for enhancing the capacity of optical fiber communication system by utilizing both the space and mode division multiplexing technologies. Various limitations in realizing efficient few mode multicore fiber (FM-MCF) design are analyzed in this paper. For both types of fibers, achievable spatial channel count, crosstalk and dispersion behavior, nonlinear effects and overhead at the receiver side are discussed. Some of the reported coupled MCF and uncoupled MCF designs are also summarized from the view point of mechanical reliability and transmission characteristics of the fiber. The constraints of the state of the art fiber designs are discussed. Also the advantages and drawbacks of both types of the fibers were reviewed. It has been observed from the existing MCF designs that, improvement in one transmission characteristics costs the other required characteristics to degrade. Finally it is outlined in this paper that, in order to make the space and mode division multiplexing more efficient and realistic in all aspects simultaneously, still better optimization in the MCF system design is required and the same can be achieved with the development of novel FM-MCF fibers, active and passive devices, data modulation techniques and signal processing algorithms.

    摘要: This paper describes and experimentally validates different multi-antenna system applications supported by a multi- core fiber (MCF) optical fronthaul. The MCF fronthaul enables the simultaneous transmission of different optical data streams at the same wavelength by the spatial multiplexing of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) signals. In addition, the MCF enables simultaneous radio beamforming by transmitting the same optical data signal with different phase or time delays to each antenna element. Both MIMO and beamforming capabilities are required for 5G multi-antenna systems. Experimental demonstrations of 4×4 MIMO transmission and multi-beam 4×1 beamforming using a commercially available 4-core fiber are reported in this work. Optical beam-steering in 5G is achieved using a Si3N4 photonic chip based on optical ring resonators (ORRs) that enables the continuous and centralized tuning of the time delay applied to each antenna element.

    摘要: In order to ensure the normal operation of the overhead high voltage line, many sensors are arranged on the high-voltage towers to monitor the state of the high voltage cable. However, high-voltage towers cannot directly provide usable power and have strong electromagnetic interference, so special energy supply methods are needed. Compared with traditional methods such as voltage divider and solar power, power-over-fiber (PoF) technology can achieve a safer and more reliable energy supply due to the passive and anti-electromagnetic interference of optical fiber. In this paper, we propose an improved structure of the PoF receiving module to reduce the impact of the environment on the power supply. And we design a multi-core energy transmitting fiber for this structure. Compared with multiple single-core fibers, using multi-core fiber can increase system integration and reduce the cost and construction difficulty.

  • Crosstalk Limitations due to Intercore Coupling on the BER Performance of an Optical Communication System with Homogeneous Multi-core Fiber

    摘要: The effect of crosstalk due to inter-core coupling on the bit error rate (BER) performance of a fiber optic communication link with a homogeneous multi-core optical fiber (MCF) and a direct detection receiver with optical preamplifier is analytically evaluated and presented in this paper. Coupling coefficients due to inter-core coupling in a 7-core MCF is evaluated numerically with as a function of core-to-core distance (pitch) and relative refractive index contrast. Coupling length is determined against various index contrasts and at different core pitches. Crosstalk power, Signal to Crosstalk plus Noise Ratio (SCNR), BER and power penalty at any output core with light launched into other core of a 7-core MCF are determined analytically. The results show that there is mentionable deterioration in BER performance due to coupling induced crosstalk, and system suffers distinct power penalty at a given BER. For example, power penalty at BER of 10e-9 is found to be 4.0 dB and 4.3 dB for a MCF link of 10 km corresponding to relative refractive index difference of 0.0036 and 0.0030, respectively, for a pitch value of 30 μm and core radius of 4.5 μm.

    摘要: We propose a multi-core fiber (MCFs) based concept which simultaneously use to generate millimeter wave (mm-wave) signal; a radio over fiber link; and a power over fiber link. In the proposed system, some cores of MCFs are used to generate mm-wave signal using an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) topology, few of the cores are used to transport data modulated mm-wave signal through radio-over-fiber (RoF) technology while others are used to transmit optical power for biasing the amplifier in the remote antenna unit with help of power over fiber (PoF) technology and photonic power converter in a small cell architecture of the future 5G technology.
