The device consists of 4 digitally switched phase-shifting units, which in total enable phase shift from (cid:2)(cid:2)(cid:1)/8 to 15pi/8 in increments of (cid:2)(cid:1)/8.

    摘要: We report the first demonstration of optically pumped mixing using a monolithically integrated photonic chip. On that chip, uni-traveling carrier photodiodes (UTC-PDs) were monolithically integrated with two lasers to generate the optical heterodyne that will drive the optically pumped mixing. The two DFB lasers wavelength spacing was tuneable from 70.5 GHz to 92.4 GHz. When an RF signal at 70 GHz was supplied to the UTC-PD with the optimum voltage bias, the UTC-PD successfully down-converted the RF signal to an intermediate frequency (IF) that was tuneable from 0.5 GHz to 16.4 GHz. These results demonstrate the potential of this photonic integrated circuit in spectroscopy, sensing and as millimeter wave wireless receivers.

  • Photonics integrated circuits using Al<sub>x</sub>Ga<sub>1-x</sub>N based UVC light-emitting diodes, photodetectors and waveguides

    摘要: We report on a study of UVC photonics integrated circuit (PIC) consisting of monolithically integrated AlxGa1-xN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) based light-emitting diodes, detectors and channel waveguides on sapphire substrates. The waveguide stack consisted of a 1.5 μm thick n-Al0.65Ga0.35N waveguide over an AlN (3.5 μm thick) clad layer. Using the integrated devices, we measured that approximately 80% of the guided-light was confined in the n+-Al0.65Ga0.35N layer, estimated the multi-mode ridge waveguide losses to be 23 cm-1 at λemission~280 nm. We also measured that approximately 80% of the guided-light was confined in the n+-Al0.65Ga0.35N layer, 7% in the underlying AlN cladding and the remaining 13% in the double-side polished sapphire substrate.

We review some of the identified challenges regarding process compatibility and present preliminary results on the integration of organic materials in a PIC technology using a 0.25 μm SiGe BiCMOS pilotline. Here, we are focusing on electro-optical applications towards high-speed modulators with ultra-low energy consumption.

  • Comparison of Free-Space and Waveguide-Based SERS Platforms

    摘要: Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) allows for the highly speci?c detection of molecules by enhancing the inherently weak Raman signals near the surface of plasmonic nanostructures. A variety of plasmonic nanostructures have been developed for SERS signal excitation and collection in a conventional free-space microscope, among which the gold nanodomes o?er one of the highest SERS enhancements. Nanophotonic waveguides have recently emerged as an alternative to the conventional Raman microscope as they can be used to e?ciently excite and collect Raman signals. Integration of plasmonic structures on nanophotonic waveguides enables reproducible waveguide-based excitation and collection of SERS spectra, such as in nanoplasmonic slot waveguides. In this paper, we compare the SERS performance of gold nanodomes, in which the signal is excited and collected in free space, and waveguide-based nanoplasmonic slot waveguide. We evaluate the SERS signal enhancement and the SERS background of the di?erent SERS platforms using a monolayer of nitrothiophenol. We show that the nanoplasmonic slot waveguide approaches the gold nanodomes in terms of the signal-to-background ratio. We additionally demonstrate the ?rst-time detection of a peptide monolayer on a waveguide-based SERS platform, paving the way towards the SERS monitoring of biologically relevant molecules on an integrated lab-on-a-chip platform.

  • An improved scheme and numerical simulation of segmented planar imaging detector for electro-optical reconnaissance

    摘要: Segmented planar photoelectric detection imaging technology is a cutting-edge photoelectric imaging technology developed to realize the miniaturization and weight reduction of imaging systems. The imaging process of the integrated optical interferometry system was simulated by a computer simulation algorithm, and the influence of the system’s structural parameters on the imaging results was explored. Moreover, an optimal scheme of the baseline matching method was proposed. The simulation results showed that increasing the number of interferometer arms and baselines can improve the imaging quality of the system. The proposed baseline matching optimization method could improve the low-frequency sampling rate of the system and thus, improve the imaging quality. In addition, simulation results also gave the optimal imaging distance of the system, which indicates that the system is most suitable for remote sensing imaging, meanwhile measuring the system’s tolerance limit to phase noise. The requirements for the precision of waveguide fabrication are given, which play a guiding role in system manufacturing.

  • A Monolithically Integrated Laser-Photodetector Chip for On-Chip Photonic and Microwave Signal Generation

    摘要: An Indium-phosphide-based monolithically integrated photonic chip comprising of an ampli?ed feedback laser (AFL) and a photodetector was designed and fabricated for on-chip photonic and microwave generation. Various waveforms including single tone, multi-tone, and chaotic signal generation were demonstrated by simply adjusting the injection currents applied to the controlling electrodes. The evolution dynamics of the photonic chip was characterized. Photonic microwave with frequency separation tunable from 26.3 GHz to 34 GHz, chaotic signal with standard bandwidth of 12 GHz were obtained. An optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on the integrated photonic chip was demonstrated without using any external electrical ?lter and photodetector. Tunable microwave outputs ranging from 25.5 to 26.4 GHz with single sideband (SSB) phase noise less than ?90 dBc/Hz at a 10-kHz o?set from the carrier frequency were realized.

  • Liquid crystal tunable claddings for polymer integrated optical waveguides

    摘要: Optical waveguides in photonic integrated circuits are traditionally passive elements merely carrying optical signals from one point to another. These elements could contribute to the integrated circuit functionality if they were modulated either by variations of the core optical properties, or by using tunable claddings. In this work, the use of liquid crystals as electro-optically active claddings for driving integrated waveguides has been explored. Tunable waveguides have been modeled and fabricated using polymers. Optical functions such as variable coupling and optical switching have been demonstrated.
