  • Growth, Luminescence and Scintillation Characterization of Disodium Di-tungstate (Na2W2O7) Crystal Scintillator

    摘要: A single crystal of Na2W2O7 was grown by using the conventional Czochralski technique. The crystal structure of the grown sample was veri?ed by using a powder X-ray di?raction (XRD) analysis. The luminescence, as well as scintillation, properties of the crystals were evaluated at room temperature. The emission spectra of the crystal were obtained by irradiating the sample with X-ray and proton sources. The trap level of the grown crystal was studied from 325 K to 500 K, and di?erent kinematic parameters were calculated. The scintillation properties such as; energy resolution, light yield, ?uorescence decay time and α/β ratio of the crystal, were studied by using γ- (662 keV from 137Cs) and α- (5.4 MeV from 241Am) sources. The luminescence and the scintillation results revealed that the Na2W2O7 crystal would be a good material for the dark matter search and for high-energy physics experiment.

  • Design and characterization of small detection modules based on scintillators and WLS bars with SiPM readout for a cosmic ray mini-array

    摘要: This paper describes the design and characterization tests of detection modules for a low-cost, easily reconfigurable mini-array for cosmic rays. The basic layout of each individual module is based on a 400 cm2 scintillator tile, optically coupled to a Wavelength Shifter (WLS) bar and a Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) for light collection and readout. Low cost solutions, based on the Arduino MEGA board, have been adopted for electronics, triggering and data acquisition, in view of the operation of this facility. The first detection modules, equipped with 4×4 mm2 SiPMs were fully built and characterized. Additional tests were also carried out with photosensors having different sensitive area and technology.

  • Development of a solid-state position sensitive neutron detector prototype based on ?6Li-glass scintillator and digital SiPM arrays

    摘要: Photomultiplier tubes (PMT) have been used extensively as the photodetector of choice in scintillation based detectors for cold and thermal neutrons. However, the limitations of PMT based scintillation neutron detectors such as their sensitivity to magnetic fields or their high operating voltages (> 1 kV) have triggered the search for alternative photodetectors for these applications. Silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) operate in the single photon regime, have lower operating voltages (~ 20 - 70 V) than PMTs and are insusceptible to magnetic field. Additional features of the SiPMs like their low production cost, compactness and higher readout rates make them a potential candidate to replace the photodetector part in these developments. Therefore, we are developing a scintillation neutron detector based on SiPM technology. The detector prototype with an active detection area of 13 cm × 13 cm is aimed to be used in the future at the TREFF instrument of the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching, Germany, for neutron reflectometry experiments. In this paper, we report the detector concept, its development and the simulation results for design optimization.

    摘要: The PADME charged particle detector system should detect positrons and electrons with efficiency better than 99 % and time resolution below 1 ns. The system hosts about 200 readout electronics channels whose operation has to be verified and commissioned. A custom based test system allowing to perform qualitative check of the produced front-end electronics has been developed and was used to test a total of 256 channels. The obtained time resolution was found to be consistent with the requirements and better than 500 ps for all the channels.

  • Scintillation properties of Ce-doped Yb3Al5O12 single crystals

    摘要: Yb3Al5O12 (YbAG) single crystals were prepared by the Floating Zone (FZ) method with and without doping with different concentrations of Ce, and then we evaluated their basic scintillation properties. All the samples showed scintillation with emission peaks in the range from 300 nm to 600 nm. The origin of this emission peak was attributed to the charge transfer luminescence of Yb3+. In addition, the Ce-doped samples showed three strong emission bands, in which the emission origin is also predominantly due to the charge transfer emission but the spectrum was deformed due to a self-absorption by the 4f-5d transitions of Ce3+. Scintillation decay profiles of all the samples were approximated by a sum of two exponential decay functions, and the obtained decay times were 1 and 9-10 ns. Among the present samples, the 0.5% Ce-doped sample showed the lowest scintillation afterglow level. All the samples demonstrated a full energy peak in the pulse height spectrum measured under 241Am 5.5 MeV α-ray irradiation. Among the present samples, the undoped sample showed the highest light yield with a value of 20 ph/5.5MeV-α.

  • Preparation and scintillation properties of Eu2+:CaF2 scintillation ceramics

    摘要: Different concentration of Eu2+ -doped CaF2 ceramics, designed to the low (0.01 at% and 0.04 at%) and the high (0.2 at% and 0.5 at%), have been prepared by hot-press sintering method. Under 355 nm laser excitation, all the ceramics showed emission bands at 425 nm due to 5d-4f transitions of Eu2+ ions and weak emission peaks at 574, 617 and 630 nm due to the 4-4f transitions of Eu3+ ions. Under X-rays irradiation, the emission bands at 315 nm and 422 nm, ascribed STE and 5d-4f transitions of Eu2+ ions, were observed and the weak emission peaks, ascribed 4f‐4f transitions of Eu3+ ions, were also observed in all the samples. Furthermore, the scintillation decay lifetime and pulse height spectra of the samples were investigated.

    摘要: In this paper, we report on the characterization of detectors constructed at RMD using 1-inch, 1.5-inch, and 2-inch diameter right cylinders of CLYC and CLLBC crystals coupled to arrays of silicon photomultipliers (SiPM). Detectors constructed with small volume CLLBC crystals coupled to a 12 mm × 12mm total area SiPM array show an excellent energy resolution of ~3% at 662 keV and a large volume CLYC crystal when coupled to a 24 mm × 24 mm area array shows an energy resolution of ~6.6% at 662 keV. Both detectors show pulse shape discrimination capabilities.

  • Optical orbital angular momentum under strong scintillation

    摘要: The evolution of classical optical fields propagating through atmospheric turbulence is investigated under arbitrary conditions. We use the single-phase screen (SPS) method and the infinitesimal propagation equation (IPE), a multiphase screen (MPS) method, to compute the optical power fractions retained in an input Laguerre-Gauss (LG) mode or transferred to higher-order LG modes. Although they show the same trend while the scintillation is weak, the IPE and SPS predictions deviate when the strength of scintillation passes a certain threshold. These predictions are compared with numerical simulations of optical fields propagating through turbulence. The simulations are performed using an MPS model, based on the Kolmogorov theory of turbulence, for different turbulence conditions to allow comparison in both weak and strong scintillation. The numerical results agree well with the IPE results in all conditions, but they deviate from the SPS results for strong scintillation.

  • Standardization of <sup>147</sup>Pm by TDCR Liquid Scintillation Counting using Printed Optical Filters; 印刷光学フィルタを用いたTDCR液体シンチレーション計数による<sup>147</sup>Pmの放射能絶対測定;

    摘要: The Optical filter method is one of methods to vary the counting efficiency for TDCR (Triple to Double Coincidence) measurement. A method for the fabrication of optical filters for 147Pm standardization was developed using printed plastic film. Toner was printed on a piece of plastic film using the laser printer. The toner color was graduated in steps by a draw software. The counting efficiency was varied according to the amount of scintillation light absorption. The specific activity of 147PmCl3 solution was successfully measured using the printed optical filters.

  • Initial evaluation of proportional scintillation in liquid Xenon for direct dark matter detection

    摘要: The Liquid Xenon Time Projection Chamber (LXeTPC) is often seen as an ideal detector for the direct Dark Matter (DM) search. In such experiments an efficient γ-ray background discrimination is essential. This can be achieved by distinguishing the ionization density, different for γ-rays and Nuclear Recoils. Two quantities are used for this measurement, the direct scintillation light generated by the ionizing event, and the free charges swept away by an electric field before recombination occurs. Present LXe detectors apply the Dual Phase principle, i.e. the charges are extracted into the gas phase and are measured by the proportional light they produce in a strong electric field in the gas. With ever growing dimensions of the detectors it is difficult to meet the tight mechanical tolerances required. Proportional scintillation also occurs in the liquid phase, although at much higher field strengths. Such field strengths can be reached in the 1/r field close to thin wires. All the limitations due to the extraction of electrons into the gas phase are avoided. Since the liquid level has not to be crossed, the design of the detector becomes simpler with many advantages over Dual Phase detectors. Our initial tests clearly show the pulses. They are much shorter, and their length is limited by longitudinal diffusion of the drifting charges. The threshold for proportional light production seems significantly lower, and estimates of the gain are more favorable than previously predicted. We attribute these discrepancies to our improved liquid purity.
