  • Simplification and experimental investigation of geometrical surface smoothness model for multi-track laser cladding processes

    摘要: The formation of large area parts requires construction of multi-track laser cladding layers which are significantly influenced by the overlapping coefficient. The geometrical model of optimal overlap ratio to obtain least surface fluctuation of multi-track claddings is derived into a simpler form in terms of the aspect ratio of single-track clads. The error analysis further demonstrates the effectiveness of these models. Multi-track single layer claddings are fabricated at a series of overlap ratios under two process conditions. The surface states of cladding layers are then evaluated by two types of smoothness definitions with two fitting methods to study the optimal overlap ratios. The results show that the experimental optimum conditions identified by two methods are slightly different from each other. The theoretical prediction is in good agreement with the experimental one when the aspect ratio is great enough to support the model assumptions.

  • Vibration parameters optimum of 316L steel laser welding under high frequency micro-vibration condition

    摘要: High frequency micro vibration combined with laser was applied in the laser welding process parameters were chosen by comparison of weld geometry. In detail, laser power(P) is 2.5kW, welding speed(V) is 1.2m / min, defocusing amount(DA) is -5mm. Three parameters including frequency(F), vibration acceleration(A) and angle(θ) were changed according to the orthogonal test scheme. The microstructure and the tensile properties of the welded joint were compared and analyzed. The morphology of weld tail was analyzed to describe hole stability. It was found that micro-structure and mechanical of joint was significantly influenced by A and F. In the case of vibration resonance, the higher the F, the better the ultimate tensile strength(UTS), and the higher the hardness. When F was 1360 Hz, UTS was 602 MPa. When A was increased from 10 to 60 m/s2, the UTS was improved by 10 MPa. HW and HL were even disappeared in a higher resonance state. Response surface analysis results showed that factors of F and A have significant effects on the width of weld. Width was increased by higher resonance state. It was obtained that optimum process parameters were F=1360 Hz, A= 60 m/s2 and θ = 90°. UTS was 602MPa, hardness was 214.5 Hv, and elongation was 40%. This is mainly due to the grain refinement strengthening.

  • Laser cladding with grinding processing of orthogonal offset face gear

    摘要: To further develop the advantages of face gear drives and improve their anti-sticking performance and wear resistance, a novel method using laser cladding as the primary process is proposed; here, grinding processing is used as the secondary process, i.e., achieving tooth surface strengthening of the orthogonal offset face gear using two types of materials to form a material gradient based on a laser cladding technology. Then, grinding processing is performed using a five-axis grinding machining. First, according to the forming principle of the face gear tooth surface, we establish the coordinate system of the orthogonal offset face gear and the gear cutter coordinate system; we also derive the tooth surface equation of the virtual gear cutter and the tooth surface equation of the orthogonal offset face gear. Second, we research the principles of the laser cladding and establish a laser cladding test bed for the orthogonal offset face gear. Based on the analysis of the design of the cladding layer and the process parameters of the face gear, the selection of the scanning path, the heat accumulation during the laser cladding process, and the accuracy control of the scanning position, we perform a laser cladding experiment on the offset orthogonal face gear. Third, we establish the machining coordinate system of the face gear based on the machine tool structure and conduct a grinding experiment for the face gear after the cladding process. Finally, we analyze the morphology and hardness of the face gear after grinding. A bench test verification of the axle face gear transmission system is completed. The results show that the precision and surface hardness of the tooth surface are significantly improved after grinding. Meanwhile, the accuracy and feasibility of the laser cladding surface of the face gear are verified.

  • Microstructural characterization of nanostructured Al2O3-ZrO2 eutectic layer by laser rapid solidification method

    摘要: In the present work, nanostructured surface layers of Al2O3-ZrO2 eutectic with a thickness of approximate 1000 μm and free of cracks and pores were produced on the surface of conventionally-sintered Al2O3-ZrO2 ceramic via the laser irradiation rapid solidification process. The molten pool geometry and microstructure were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The geometrical evolution of molten pool in response to laser power and laser scanning velocity was established, where the top view of molten pool exhibits a circular shape at low velocities and gradually evolves into an oval-shaped surface at high velocities. Singular Al2O3-ZrO2 eutectic colonies with a size of 100-200 μm, which is formed around a spontaneously nucleated dendritic ZrO2 core, are found on the surface of laser-remelted layer. The eutectic colony has an interphase spacing of 190-280 nm. The variation of eutectic spacing with growth rate is essentially linear on the logarithmic scale as λ=KV-0.4 by binary regression analysis. Predicted by the Jackson-Hunt theory on eutectic solidification (JH theory), the eutectic spacing is consistent with the inverse-square-root dependence on growth rate with a proportionality constant of 3.32. The eutectic colonies consist of α-Al2O3, t-ZrO2 and m-ZrO2 phases, where α-Al2O3 and t-ZrO2 are the dominant phases and the m-ZrO2 phase increases with the decrease of laser scanning velocity.

  • Evaluation of fluences and surface characteristics in laser polishing SKD 11 tool steel

    摘要: In this paper, a continuous-wave laser beam from a multimode fiber laser was applied to study the polishing effect. Three kinds of surface morphologies were acquired by fast-speed (FS) & lower-speed (LS) wire electrical discharge machining (EDM), milling processing methods on SKD11 tool steel. Then influence of laser fluence on the polished surface characteristics was analyzed. The results showed that surface roughness parameters (Ra, Rz, Rt, and Sa) can be significantly affected by this effect. With laser fluence increasing, the polished surface underwent a comprehensive topographical evolution from superficial surface melting to surface over-melting. The improvements by FS-EDM, LS-EDM, and milling in roughness were 86.83%, 90.70% and 86.07%, respectively. The corresponding laser fluences were 14.26 J/mm2, 12.73 J/mm2 and 13.55 J/mm2, indicating that LS-EDM tool steel surface has the best polishing effect. The comparative statistical results of the bearing area curve, bidirectional reflectance distribution function, and power spectral density from the LS-EDM surfaces showed the best polishing results. In addition, all the pre-prepared surfaces could be polished to Ra < 0.5 μm using high polishing velocities. These findings also signified that laser beam with top-hat distribution has a great potential for high-efficiency polishing of tool steel surfaces.

  • Optical Fiber Cladding SPR Sensor Based on Core-Shift Welding Technology

    摘要: The typical structure of an optical fiber surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor, which has been widely investigated, is to produce the SPR phenomenon by the transmission of light in a fiber core. The traditional method is to peel off the fiber cladding by complex methods such as corrosion, polishing, and grinding. In this paper, the transmitted light of a single-mode fiber is injected into three kinds of fiber cladding by core-shift welding technology to obtain the evanescent field directly between the cladding and the air interface and to build the Kretschmann structure by plating with a 50-nm gold film. The SPR sensing phenomenon is realized in three kinds of fiber cladding of a single-mode fiber, a graded-index multimode fiber, and a step-index multimode fiber. For the step-index multimode fiber cladding SPR sensor, all the light field energy is coupled to the cladding, leading to no light field in the fiber core, the deepest resonance valley, and the narrowest full width at half maximum. The single-mode fiber cladding SPR sensor has the highest sensitivity, and the mean sensitivity of the probe reaches 2538 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) after parameter optimization.

  • Effects of TiO2 on the performance of silver coated on side-polished optical fiber for alcohol sensing applications

    摘要: This work reports the experimental and numerical investigations on the effect of titanium oxide (TiO2) integrated on the optical fiber silver (Ag) surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensors. In this paper, the numerical simulation is also analyzed using the finite element method (FEM) which shows good agreement. Results are compared with the experimental findings, focusing on the SPR phenomena for refractive index sensing using side-polished optical fiber, where the characteristics of the Ag layer with the integration of TiO2 are optimized. The essential parameters include the thickness of Ag namely 20 nm, 30 nm and 40 nm for optimization studies of SPR properties. TiO2 was then coated on the Ag thin layer to sense isopropanol at different concentration. It is shown that the combination of a 30 nm thickness of Ag layer with a dielectric TiO2 improves sensor performance in terms of sensitivity reading of 268 nm/RIU with a detection limit of 0.012. The main interest is to develop the device with cost effective, ease fabrication and less cumbersome of sensors using TiO2 which one of an alternative material to defeat the oxidation process and avoid charge recombination. If the sensitivity increases at a higher wavelength, it indicates that the TiO2 holds great potential in photonic applications.

  • Narrow-line InGaN/GaN green laser diode with high-order distributed-feedback surface grating

    摘要: We demonstrate narrow-line green laser emission at 513.85 nm with a linewidth of 31 pm and side-mode suppression ratio of 36.9 dB, operating under continuous-wave injection at room temperature. A high-order (40th) distributed-feedback surface grating fabricated on multimode InGaN-based green laser diodes via a focused ion beam produces resolution-limited, single-mode lasing with an optical power of 14 mW, lasing threshold of 7.27 kA cm?2, and maximum slope efficiency of 0.32 W A?1. Our realization of narrow-line green laser diodes opens a pathway toward efficient optical communications, sensing, and atomic clocks.

  • The effect of the TiO2 film on the performance of the optical fiber SPR sensor

    摘要: We studied the effect of the Titanium Oxide (TiO2) film on the performance of the optical fiber SPR with two kinds of probes. The light guiding properties and sensing performance of the D-type optical fiber SPR sensor coated with TiO2 was studied numerically by finite element method (FEM) and the sensing performance of the multimode-single mode-multimode (MSM) hetero-core optical fiber SPR sensor coated with TiO2 was investigated experimentally. The simulation and experimental results for two kinds of probes consistently show that the absence of TiO2 film layer on the gold film can enhance the refractive index sensitivity and tune the resonance curve of the sensor from visible light to near-infrared.

  • A Speckle-Free Angular Interrogation SPR Imaging Sensor Based on Galvanometer Scan and Laser Excitation

    摘要: A speckle-free fast angular interrogation surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi) sensor based on a diode-pumped all-solid-state laser and galvanometer is reported in this work. A bidirectional scan using a galvanometer realizes the fast scanning of the incidence angle. The experimental results showed that the time needed for completing an SPR dip measurement was decreased to 0.5 s. And through cascading an immovable diffuser and two diffusers rotating in opposite directions, laser speckle was eliminated. The dynamic detection range and the sensitivity reached 4.6 × 10?2 and 1.52 × 10?6 refractive index unit (RIU), respectively, in a 2D array sensor when the angle scanning range was set as 7.5°. More importantly, the results demonstrated that the angular interrogation SPR imaging sensor scheme had the capability to perform fast and high-throughput detection of biomolecular interactions at 2D sensor arrays.
