  • Quantum regime for dielectric Cherenkov radiation and graphene surface plasmons

    摘要: In this article, we propose a quantum regime for Cherenkov free-electron laser (CFEL) and surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) excited in dielectric and multilayer graphene waveguides, respectively. This quantum regime is realized when the momentum spread induced in the interaction is smaller than the photon recoil. The discrete momentum exchange characterizing this interaction yields a significantly narrow single emission line. To determine the condition of the quantum regime, we derive an expression for the gain in the Cherenkov effect using a quantum mechanical treatment. It is assumed that the effective spread in momentum is due to the finite interaction length L (or the propagation length in the case of SPPs). For both cases, CFEL and SPPs, the effects of electron beam and waveguide parameters on the possibility of the quantum regime are studied. We conclude that the quantum regime can be basically verified at low electron beam energy (<40 keV) and at emission wavelengths in the near infrared range (<5 μm) when L is in the order of millimeters. In the case of SPPs, we also show that the feasibility to realize quantum SPPs is enhanced by increasing the chemical potential and number of graphene layers.

    摘要: a wide-angle frequency-controlled beam-scanning antenna excited by planar spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) is proposed in this paper. The scanning angle and the gains of the proposed antenna can reach 83 degrees and 11.5dBi, respectively. The features of high gain, planar structure and wide scanning angle make this kind of antennas have great values in integrated communication systems.

  • Rejection of Spoof SPPs Using the Second Resonant Mode of Vertical Split-Ring Resonator

    摘要: In this letter, the studies of the vertical split-ring resonator (VSRR) at its second resonant mode are carried out for the first time. The VSRR can be regarded as an electric resonator at such resonant mode, which is proven by its resonant current distribution. Then, a new type of rejection plasmonic filter is constructed by adding the VSRR on the planar spoof surface plasmon polariton (SPP) waveguide using double-side corrugated metallic strips. The second resonance of the VSRR is excited by the z-component of the electric field of the spoof SPP mode, near which the SPP propagation is prevented. Utilizing this principle, a plasmonic filter with broadband rejection is designed and fabricated. The measurement result is presented to confirm the highly efficient filtering performance of the proposed filter, which makes it possible to be applied in the advanced integrated plasmonic devices and circuits at microwave and terahertz frequencies.

  • Nonperturbative nonlinear effects in the dispersion relations for TE and TM plasmons on two-dimensional materials

    摘要: We analytically obtain the dispersion relations for transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) surface plasmon-polaritons in a nonlinear two-dimensional (2D) conducting material with inversion symmetry lying between two Kerr-type dielectric media. To this end, we use Maxwell’s equations within the quasielectrostatic, weakly dissipative regime. We show that the wavelength and propagation distance of surface plasmons decrease due to the nonlinearity of the surrounding dielectric. In contrast, the effect of the nonlinearity of the 2D material depends on the signs of the real and imaginary parts of the third-order conductivity. Notably, the dispersion relations obtained by naively replacing the permittivity of the dielectric medium by its nonlinear counterpart in the respective dispersion relations of the linear regime are not accurate. We apply our analysis to the case of doped graphene and make predictions for the surface plasmon wavelength and propagation distance.

    摘要: We present theoretical and experimental evaluations of the thermally generated surface plasmon polaritons (TSPPs) contribution to heat radiation of metal objects. It is found that this contribution is significant only for the edges of such objects flat facets observed at sliding angles to the facets planes and it is p-polarized. The analytical model for calculation the spectrum and the integral intensity of the entire set of TSPPs arriving to the edge of their sources line has been developed. In contrast to thermal radiation, intensity of TSPPs is proportional to the third rather than fourth degree of temperature, while the TSPP spectrum is shifted towards low frequencies relative to the thermal radiation spectrum.

  • High Sensitive Biosensors Based on the Coupling Between Surface Plasmon Polaritons on Titanium Nitride and a Planar Waveguide Mode

    摘要: High sensitivity biosensors based on the coupling of surface plasmon polaritons on titanium nitride (TiN) and a planar waveguide mode were built; they were proved by sensing three di?erent media: air, water and dried egg white; sensors described here could be useful for sensing materials with a refractive index between 1.0 and 1.6; in particular, materials of biological interest with a refractive index in the range 1.3–1.6, like those containing biotin and/or streptavidin. They were built by depositing Nb2O5/SiO2/TiN multilayer structures on the ?at surface of D-shaped sapphire prisms by using the dc magnetron sputtering technique. Attenuated total re?ection (ATR) experiments in the Kretschmann con?guration were accomplished for the air/TiN/Prism and S/Nb2O5/SiO2/TiN/Prism structures, S being the sample or sensing medium. ATR spectra for plasmons at the TiN/air interface showed a broad absorption band for angles of incidence between 36 and 85?, with full width at half maximum (FWHM) of approximately 40?. For the S/Nb2O5/SiO2/TiN/Prism structures, ATR spectra showed a sharp re?ectivity peak, within the broad plasmonic absorption band, which was associated with Fano resonances. The angular position and FWHM of the Fano resonances strongly depend on the refractive index of the sensing medium. ATR spectra were ?tted by using the transfer-matrix method. Additionally, we found that angular sensitivity and ?gure of merit increase with increasing the refractive index of the sensing medium.

  • Magnetic field sensor based on magnetoplasmonic crystal

    摘要: Here we report on designing a magnetic field sensor based on magnetoplasmonic crystal made of noble and ferromagnetic metals deposited on one-dimensional subwavelength grating. The experimental data demonstrate resonant transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) at a narrow spectral region of 50 nm corresponding to the surface plasmon-polaritons excitation and maximum modulation of the reflected light intensity of 4.5% in a modulating magnetic field with the magnitude of 16 Oe. Dependences of TMOKE on external alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) magnetic field demonstrate that it is a possibility to use the magnetoplasmonic crystal as a high-sensitive sensing probe. The achieved sensitivity to DC magnetic field is up to 10?6 Oe at local area of 1 mm2.

    摘要: In this paper, a Dielectric-Metal-Dielectric (DMD) plasmonic waveguide coupled with a rectangular slot is proposed and analyzed numerically with the Finite Element Method (FEM) as a refractive index sensor. Different structural parameters are varied to obtain maximum sensitivity of the proposed structure. In this geometry, silver is used as the metal and it is surrounded by Material Under Sensing (MUS) which is dielectric in nature. The linear correlation between both the refractive index and the position of the transmission peaks is used for the detection of the materials. From this simpler geometry, maximum sensitivity is obtained to be 818 nm/RIU; RIU means Refractive Index Unit. Due to the ease in the nanoscale fabrication of the proposed simplistic structure, it can have potential applications in nanoscale optical devices and the nano chip sensors.

  • High-Performance Enhancement of a GaAs Photodetector Using a Plasmonic Grating

    摘要: In this study, we present and establish a gold surface plasmon polariton (SPP) GaAs photodetector that achieves high internal quantum efficiency (IQE). At a wavelength of 600 nm, the IQE with the SPP was 85%, while the IQE without the SPP was 42%, an enhancement of 43%. Also, at a wavelength of 675 nm, the IQE with SPP was 82%, whereas the IQE without SPP was 45%, which constitutes an increase of 37%. Such excellent performance is ascribed to the subwavelength scope of the optical power in the photoconductive-based gold SPP GaAs that provides high IQE. Moreover, the recombination of the SPP in the photodetector provides greater photocurrent and responsivity.

  • Symmetric and antisymmetric surface plasmon polariton solitons in a metal-dielectric-metal waveguide with incoherent pumping

    摘要: We propose a scheme to realize stable linear and nonlinear propagation of symmetric and antisymmetric surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) solitons by doping ladder-type three-level quantum emitters into the middle layer of a metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) waveguide. In linear propagation regime, we show that both symmetric and antisymmetric SPPs can acquire a gain from electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect with an incoherent pumping. The EIT can be used not only to completely compensate the Ohmic loss in the metal but also to acquire a subluminal group velocity for the SPPs. We also show that in nonlinear propagation regime a huge enhancement of Kerr nonlinearity of the symmetric and antisymmetric SPPs can be obtained but with different incoherent pumping intensities. As a result, gain-assisted (1+1)-dimensional symmetric and antisymmetric subluminal surface polaritonic solitons may be produced based on the strong confinement of electric field in the MDM waveguide. Our study may have promising applications in light information processing and transmission at nanoscale level based on MDM waveguides.
